Holly Shay didn't believe in signs.

But as she tossed Devon's and Marshall's dirty clothes on top of the hamper, her wedding band, loose after she'd dropped the last of her baby weight, slipped off her finger and went flying across the room. Two carats of flawless princess-cut diamonds hit the wall at high velocity, leaving a dimple in the paint, and landed with a clunk on the nursery floor.

Maybe someone was trying to tell her something. That it was time to take it off. At this point she didn't have much choice.

The idea of hocking the ring broke her heart, but she had only a few weeks to find a new apartment. She had no job and not a penny to her name. Only after Jeremy's death last month had she learned of the considerable debt he'd sunk them into over the course of their tenmonth marriage. She would be paying off his debts for many years to come.

But that's what addicts did, or so she had been told. If she had only known she could have helped him. It still astounded her that she had been so blind. She'd known deep down that something wasn't quite right with him. She'd assumed it was the stress of having twin infants. A new marriage—especially the shotgun variety—was a challenge in itself, but toss a high-risk pregnancy, then fragile preemies into the mix and things could get dicey. The boys had been born a month early and had had to spend nearly two weeks in the NICU. When they finally had come home it had been with machines to monitor their breathing and heart rate. It had taken a toll on them both.

But it wasn't until after Jeremy overdosed that she'd put the pieces of the puzzle together. Only then did she recognize the signs. She had been stupidly and irresponsibly blinded by love, by the fantasy of the perfect family she had always dreamed of having. When would she learn that for some people the happily-ever-after would never come? It just wasn't in the game plan.

It could have been so much worse. Holly had lost both her parents when she was a child, but she had been one of the lucky ones. Orphaned ten-year-olds typically were difficult to place in the foster care system, but she had been taken in by a really nice couple with two other foster kids. There never had been much money, but the essentials always had been covered. She'd had a hot meal every night, decent clothes on her back and someone to help with her homework. And though she and her foster siblings all lived at opposite ends of the country now, and her foster parents had retired to Florida, they still emailed and texted on a semi-regular basis. But it wasn't the same as having a real family.

The last pinkish whispers of dusk filtered through the blinds as Holly gazed down into the matching cribs at her sleeping sons. An overwhelming feeling of love filled the chambers of her heart. She'd never known it was possible to feel such an intense connection to another person. She would hands down give her life for them.

They would be three months old tomorrow, meaning Jeremy had been gone almost a month now. It broke her heart that they would never know their father. Her marriage to Jeremy hadn't been perfect, or easy, but the good relationships never were. She just hadn't realized how imperfect it actually had been.

Was it better that he had died now rather than in a year or two? Had not knowing him spared the twins undue heartache? Or would they go through life with a hole in their hearts that never would be filled?

Could you miss someone you'd never known?

Holly remembered all too well what it had been like after her parents died. She had learned to cope, but it was the sort of thing a person never really got over. It was always in the back of her mind. The unfairness of it. The deep feeling of emptiness. Knowing that she was truly alone. But now that she had the boys, she would never be alone again.

She walked across the room to where the ring had landed and bent over to pick it up. It had always felt clunky and heavy on her hand. Too big and flashy. That was Jeremy's taste, not hers. She would have been content with one carat or less. He'd refused to tell her what it cost, but it must have been thousands. Tens of thousands, even. Hopefully it was worth at least half that much used.

Instead of sliding the ring back on her finger, she slipped it into the front pocket of her jeans. The landlord had taken pity on her and given her an entire month rent-free to get her affairs in order and find an affordable place. She couldn't put it off any longer. Tomorrow morning she would load the boys in the stroller and take a trip to the jewelers to see what she could get for the ring. She'd run the scenario through her head a million times, and the outcome was always the same. She needed money, and the ring was the only thing she had left of any worth. She didn't even own a car. Which made hauling twins around a challenge.

The only question now was, even if she had the money to get a new apartment, would anyone give her a lease? The credit cards Jeremy had opened in her name were all maxed out and in default, and until she could arrange for some sort of child care, getting a job would be next to impossible. She had no family to help her, no friends willing to take on the task of twins full time, and conventional day care for two infants would be astronomically expensive.

In her chest she felt a tightness, a knot of despair that made it hard to breathe. She'd been through difficult times in the past, but never had she felt this hopeless, this sense of impending doom.

She peered into the cribs one last time, smiling when her gaze settled on the boys' sweet angelic faces. Then she turned on the baby monitor and backed out of the nursery, quietly shutting the door behind her.

She and Jeremy had seriously discussed moving but they'd never gotten the chance. Her morning sickness had been so bad the first four months Holly had spent half her time in bed, and the other half hanging over the commode. In her fifth month, just as she had begun to feel like a human being again, she had gone into premature labor. They'd stopped it just in time, but from that day on she'd been on strict bed rest. It hadn't been easy, but they'd managed. At least, she'd thought they had.

Jeremy had promised her that after the boys were born they would start looking for a house. He'd thought they would buy a fixer-upper in a small cozy town upstate. A place they could make their own. Now she knew that with all of Jeremy's debt, no bank ever would have given them a mortgage. Jeremy must have known it, too.

She felt torn between missing him and wanting to sock him in the nose for not being honest with her. Whatever their problems, they could have worked them out. Why hadn't he just talked to her? It was no secret he'd had trust issues, but they had run deeper than she'd realized. A foster kid himself, Jeremy hadn't been as lucky. He hadn't talked about his past much, but she knew he'd been in the system most of his life, bounced around between group homes and foster homes until he'd ventured out on his own at sixteen. Clearly his past had scarred him more than she'd ever imagined. As his wife she should have known. She should have seen what was happening, right? She could have saved him.

The question was had he wanted to be saved?

She stepped into her bedroom and switched on the light. Their neatly made king-size bed mocked her from across the room. She hadn't slept in it since she'd found Jeremy there. Other than straightening the covers, she hadn't touched it at all. She'd been avoiding the bedroom in general, only going in to grab her clothes, and only because there was no place else in the apartment to store them. She'd been sleeping on an air mattress that she'd first put in the nursery, and recently moved into the living room next to the sofa.

She looked around the room and sighed. She used to love this apartment. Now she could barely wait to leave. Since his death being here felt…wrong. It never would be a home again without Jeremy. His whole life, everything he'd owned in the world, was in that apartment. She was torn between wanting to keep it all and the need for a fresh start.

She grabbed her pajamas and pulled the door closed behind her as she stepped into the hall. It was barely eight o'clock, but these days she slept when the boys slept. That wouldn't be possible when she got a job.

She collapsed onto the sofa, letting her head fall back and her eyes slip closed. She must have gone out instantly, and when she roused to the sound of a knock at the door, it was nearly nine-thirty.

She assumed the visitor was her neighbor Sara from across the hall, who often stopped by after work to chat, so Holly didn't bother checking the peephole. She wasn't exactly in the mood for company, but it would be rude not to say hello.

She pulled open the door, but it wasn't Sara, after all. A man stood there, and though he was facing away, looking down the hall toward the stairs, something about him seemed eerily familiar. Something about the tall, solid build and broad shoulders. The thick, coarse black hair that swirled into a cowlick at the left side of his crown, and the stubborn little tuft that wanted to stand up straight. He would always have to use extra gel—

Her breath caught in her lungs and her heart took a downward dive to the pit of her belly. Oh, God. Whoever this man was, from the back he looked exactly like Jeremy. Except for the clothes. He wore a suit, and Holly had worked in retail long enough to recognize a custom fit when she saw one. The closest Jeremy had ever come to wearing a suit, custom or otherwise, had been dress slacks and a blazer, and then only because she'd forbade him from wearing jeans to the wedding of a good friend. And she'd had to go out and buy the stuff for him.

She'd barely completed the thought when the man turned, and as she saw his face, her world shifted violently. Staring back at her were eyes as familiar as her own, and though she could see his lips moving, his voice sounded muffled and distant, as if someone had stuffed cotton in her ears. Her vision blurred around the edges, then folded in on itself.

It couldn't be, she told herself. Either she was dreaming or having a complete psychotic break. Because this man didn't just look like her dead husband.

He was Jeremy.

Before Jason Cavanaugh could inquire as to the identity of the attractive blonde who'd opened the door to the apartment his lawyer claimed had been his brother's, the color leached from her face. Then her eyes went wide and rolled back into her head. He watched helplessly as she crumpled to the floor, her head barely missing the door frame as she went down.

He sighed and mumbled a curse. His prowess with women was legendary, but even he'd never had one fall to his feet in a dead faint.

As an identical twin, this wouldn't be the first time someone had mistaken him for his brother. Though he had never gotten this reaction before. Angry words, yes, and once he'd even had a drink thrown in his face.

He could only imagine what Jeremy had done to this poor girl. Had he charged up all her credit cards and then bailed on her? Slept with her best friend? Or her mother? Or her best friend's mother?

When it came to Jeremy the possibilities were endless. But all Jason wanted was to fetch his brother's belongings, if they hadn't been disposed of already, and head back upstate. He didn't know if there was anything worth keeping, and he wasn't normally the sentimental type, but he had so little left of his brother. Five years ago, after Jeremy had been through another wasted stint in rehab, their father had had enough. He'd disowned Jeremy, disinherited him and purged their home of anything that reminded him of his troubled son. For all the good it had done. And though he knew it was irrational, deep down Jason still blamed himself for Jeremy's downward spiral. Against his father's wishes, Jason had even set up a monthly allowance for his brother, who had no means to support himself. Maybe that had been a mistake, too.

Jason knelt beside the woman, whom he was guessing couldn't be more than twenty-two or three, and touched her cheek. It was warm and it seemed the color was returning to her face. Long brown hair with reddish highlights fanned out around her head and her T-shirt rode up exposing an inch or so of her stomach, making him feel like a voyeur.

"Hey." He gave her shoulder a gentle nudge and she mumbled incoherently. "Wake up."

Her eyes fluttered open, big and blue and full of confusion as they focused on his face. "What happened?"

"You passed out," he said, offering his hand. "Can you sit up?"

"I think so." She grabbed on, her eyes glued to his face, containing a look caught somewhere between shock and horror. He gave her a gentle boost and though she wobbled a little, squeezing his hand to keep her balance, she managed to stay upright. "Got it?" he asked.

She nodded and let go, still transfixed. "You look just like him. Except…" She reached up to touch his left brow, grazing it with the tips of her fingers. Her touch was so light it was almost provocative. "No scar."

"No scar," he responded.

She blinked several times, then yanked her hand back, as if just realizing that she was touching a total stranger. "I'm sorry. I just…"

"It's okay." However or wherever Jeremy had gotten the scar, it must have occurred in the past five years. Since the day they were born, it had been next to impossible to tell them apart. They were truly identical in every way.

Well, almost every way.

"Jeremy never told you that he had an identical twin?"

She shook her head, appearing dazed and very confused. "He told me that he didn't have any family."

Jason was living proof that he had.

"He lied to me," she said, still shaking her head in disbelief. She looked up at Jason, and in her eyes he could see anger and hurt and a whole lot of confusion.

"Why would he do that?"

Too unbelievable.
By bookiewookie
Too down in some places, and too slow and boring in others, in my opinion. It is a heavy storyline to begin with, left with twin babies after your husband dies from drug addiction; but the addition of a couple trying and failing to conceive, and best friends with Jason, the dead husband's twin brother, just made it even heavier. And Jason's life-threatening health problem -- well, for me, who reads for a little entertaining escapism away from the problems of real life, this was just a little bit too much.
Holly was likable most of the time, I decided I was supposed to forgive some of her thrashing out at Jason for being good to her because of all she'd been through with his brother, even though it did irritate me. She was a good mom, and her love for the twins showed, as did Jasons.
But the story seemed too ridiculously convenient in places, things that defied the reality of the character's situations, too much contrived happiness to be believable, and an ending that was so quick, and totally rushed feeling, it was awful, in my opinion. It seemed like, after giving outrageous scenerios, the author decided to just call it quits rather than explain what eventually happened in those scenerios in the end. All very up in the air feeling when I turned the last page. And I also felt that there was too much of everybody coming down on the dead brother, Jeremy. Yes, he did some terrible things in his tragic life -- but he was an addict ! Surely, being tragically dead, from this horrible infliction, should have gotten him a little leeway in the verbal abuse and blame department. Someone should have been mourning his passing, even if with some 'if onlys' attached.
And it's worth noting that what attracted me to this book was the twin babies. I'm a sucker for stories with cute babies and little kids. Too bad the twin babies in this book were mostly sleeping, or briefly referred to all the time. Just short snippet with croup in beginning.
I am definitely choosing an upbeat, happy book to read next.

Loved it!
By S. Frank
Very good book. Holly has been dealing with a whole host of problems. She is the mother of twin boys, whose father is dead. She had married him because she was pregnant, not knowing that he had drug problems. With his death, she discovered that he had left massive debts, which she currently has no way to pay. Without income, she will also soon be homeless. When her doorbell rings one night, she is stunned to find a man that looks just like her husband standing there, a man who turns out to be her husband's twin brother.

Holly finds out that her husband had told her a bunch of lies about who he was and where he had come from. When Jason explains who he is, and that he wants to help, she is relieved, but also cautious. Having been deceived once, she doesn't want to risk it again. It doesn't take too long for her to realize that Jason is the real thing, which creates a different kind of problem. She is very attracted to him.

Jason was stunned to find out that his brother had not only married, but fathered twin boys. He is determined to do whatever is necessary to take care of them. Making Holly part of the package is no hardship. In spite of her frazzled appearance, he was attracted to her from the moment he met her. He'd like to get closer to her, but he's got his own secret that is keeping him at a distance.

I really liked Jason. He is a wonderful man who really cares about the people around him. He had done everything he could to help his brother, and felt guilty that nothing had worked. It was really sweet to see how quickly he took to the boys. The attraction he feels for Holly is really strong, and his feelings for her grow rapidly, but he has health issues that make him reluctant to marry and have a family of his own. I liked the way that he was honest with her about it, even though he was being terribly pessimistic. He tries very hard to keep their relationship to just friends, but it is a losing battle.

I loved Holly's independence. She really wants to be able to handle everything herself, but she has to admit that she needs help. She also sees Jason's need to take care of the twins, since they are the only family he has left. She's also just as attracted to him as he is to her and is willing to see where it goes, until he explains his issues to her. She starts out agreeing with him that they should stick to being friends, but the more she gets to know him the more she wants him.

I loved seeing the relationship develop between Holly and Jason. I loved seeing them give in to the passion that went along with their friendship. It grew rapidly into love, but neither would admit it to the other. Jason had begun to realize that his fears were a bit extreme, but he wasn't sure how to tell Holly that he had changed. Holly had also realized that she would rather have whatever time she could with Jason, rather than deny them both the life that they wanted. There was a very interesting twist at the end that surprised both Holly and Jason. I loved seeing them finally have the courage to share their feelings and look forward to a future together. I would have liked an epilogue to see the results of that surprise, but maybe they'll show up in a later book.

I also liked the secondary characters of Lewis and Miranda and the struggles they were going through. It was nice to see Holly and Miranda develop such a wonderful friendship, and the support they gave each other. I loved seeing Holly be there for Miranda during her troubles, and how Miranda repaid her. The bathing suit scene was pretty funny, especially with the resulting discovery.

From Publishers Weekly
Novak's personal experience with juvenile diabetes puts a poignant spin on this tale of a mother's daily struggle to care for her diabetic son while on the run from her wealthy, abusive boyfriend, Manuel. Emma Wright is armed with a new identity, a teaching degree and a couple of thousand in cash when she leaves Manuel's California mansion with her five-year-old son, Max. Unfortunately, Manuel is hot on her heels, and he has the help of powerful and shady connections. After Emma's car is stolen while she's picking up supplies at a Nevada Wal-Mart, Emma throws herself on the mercy of Preston Holman, a man she'd met briefly at a motel where she and Max were staying. Preston wants nothing to do with the pair; he's still hurting from his divorce as well as the sudden illness and subsequent death of his own young son. Inevitably, Novak's reluctant hero comes to Emma's rescue—and becomes emotionally entangled in the process. Anyone who has seen the movies Sleeping with the Enemy or Enough will anticipate every plot twist, but Novak (A Home of Her Own, etc.) knows how to relate a suspenseful tale. When Emma isn't reeling from a near brush with Manuel, she's frantically trying to keep her son's blood sugar levels stable, and her almost palpable fear fuels this gripping tale. (July)

From Booklist
Emma Wright carefully put together a plan that allowed her and her young son, Max, to escape Manuel Rodriguez, Max's father and the man Emma once thought loved her, but Manuel has tracked her down in Fallon, Nevada. Stranded without a car and with very little money, Emma turns to Preston Holman, a complete stranger, for help. Preston had dedicated the last two years of his life to finding the man responsible for the death of Dallas, his young son, and the last thing he needs is Emma and her diabetic son, who reminds him of Dallas, distracting him from his plans for revenge. Preston reluctantly agrees to take Emma and Max with him when he leaves town, never expecting that by helping them escape their past, he would also be creating a new future for himself. Strongly defined characters, sizzling sexual tension, and a tautly constructed plot steeped in danger blend brilliantly together in Novak's exceptionally intense, powerfully emotional novel of romantic suspense. Great suspense and a villain you'll love to hate
By Tracy Vest

It won't be easy to hide - Max has juvenile diabetes, and requires medication and insulin. If Manuel pinpoints their location, he can contact local pharmacies to try to locate them. While on the run she hooks up with a fellow tortured soul - Preston Holman, who has spent the better part of the last two years searching for the doctor he holds responsible for the death of his son.

At first, Preston wants nothing to do with the rag tag duo, mostly because Max reminds him of his son Dallas. But a touch of guilt and his instant lust for Emma has him offering them a ride to Iowa. As Max worms his way into Preston's heart, and he and Emma embark on a passionate affair, Preston is able to open up and feel something more than his grief and his need for vengeance.

Manuel, a drug runner with an emasculating mama that makes Norman Bates look functional, will never let his lover get the best of him. He vows to find her and bring her home for punishment. He and his henchman follow up on clues but the trio on the run keeps one step ahead of them. Will their luck ever run out?

With a villain you cannot help but hate, and endearing child you cannot help but love, and a passionate but damaged couple who find a second chance for love, you won't be able to help but become entangled in this story and hope for that Hollywood ending.

Manuel Rodriguez kept Vanessa under tight control. Oh, he had to abuse her sometimes, but he figured he was simply using "tough love". Though they never married, Manuel knew he could always use their six-year-old boy to manipulate her into whatever he wanted. He never expected her to have the guts to PLAN an escape from him, much less succeed. But he would find her. She could not have much money. Once he got her back, she'd pay big time. She would never even THINK of running off again.

Vanessa had ID in the name of Emma Wright. Her son was now called Max. With luck, they could reach Iowa to live a nice, quiet life there. Even as Emma prayed that would happen, she knew Manuel was hot on her trail.

Preston Holman was hunting down the man he believed killed his son. He had only to find proof. When he met Emma he wanted nothing to do with her. Her son, Max, reminded him too much of his own son. But he knew they were desperate, running from something or someone, and he could not abandon them. He vowed to keep an emotional distance from the pair, drop them off in Iowa, and forget about them. Yet his heart knew better.

***** Author Brenda Novak has proven, once again, that she is one of the top suspense writers of our days. This one is a breathless romantic suspense novel that will keep her readers' attention from the first page until long after the last has been turned. The characters seem to actually come alive from the pages and I found myself holding my breath at a few points. An outstanding book that I highly recommend! *****

4-1/2 stars, and then some!
By Mrs. K
This book is one of the best suspense/romance novels I have read in years! I only wonder why Brenda Novak didn't ride the top of the bestseller lists with this superior book.

Emma is trying to escape with her diabetic son, Max, from her abusive "husband" Manuel (who can only be described as OILY- this guy really makes my skin crawl!) Manuel relentlessly chases her cross-country...but Emma finds reluctant help in Preston Holman, who is deeply troubled and on a quest of his own. Emma and Preston certainly don't love-or even really like-one another at first, but they DO need each other, and the story is built realistically in that vein.

The way this book is written, I didn't become frustrated with the book when an exasperating situation arose- just got angrier with creepy Manuel. And I was touched by Preston's slow (and therefore believable) change of attitude.

The end of this book is very charming and I cried a little. This is my second Brenda Novak book, and I liked it enough that I'll recommend it frequently.

"I'd like you to marry my daughter."

Skye Titan was having enough trouble balancing a small tray with two drinks and a plate of appetizers in one hand while reaching for the study door with the other. A sudden inability to breathe only complicated the stability problem.

Thirty seconds ago she would have thought that nothing her father said could surprise her anymore. She would have been wrong.

Talk about humiliating, she thought, wondering if Jed Titan's statement was meant to buy a son-in-law or sell a daughter. With him, she couldn't be sure.

"Izzy?" the other man asked, his voice clearly audible, despite the thick door between them.

"No. Skye."

"Oh."

Skye waited impatiently.

"Oh?" Was that the best he could do? Annoyance grew as time ticked on.

"I guess that would work, too," the other voice said at last.

Skye practically growled in irritation. Words to make her heart beat faster for sure. So charming. How was she going to keep from throwing herself at T. J. Boone when she walked into the study?

If she had been any less the well-trained hostess, not to mention a dutiful daughter, she would have pushed open the door, tossed the drinks in both their faces and left the house, never to be heard from again.

"Egotistical jackass bastard," she muttered, not sure if she meant the insult for T.J. or her father. They both deserved it.

She forced herself to breathe slowly, then imagined herself sinking into the big tub in the bathroom off her bedroom. Bubbles up to her chin, a glass of white wine to take off the edge. She was calm and in control. She was going to do the right thing, because that's who she was. The good girl, dammit. The one who served drinks to men like T.J. and her father.

Skye opened the door to the study and stepped inside the room. The two men stood next to the pool table. Jed didn't bother acknowledging her while T.J. looked momentarily uncomfortable. As if he wondered whether she'd heard him condemn her with faint praise.

She smiled as she offered the successful businessman his drink, wishing she'd thought to spit in it first.

"T.J.," she said.

"Skye."

He was good-looking, in a blond, blue-eyed sort of way. Tall and well dressed. He was a Texas boy and was probably charming, but it was hard to notice when the unenthusiastic "I guess that would work, too" was bouncing around in her brain.

She set the appetizers on the table in the corner. "Is there anything else, Daddy?" she asked.

"That's all, Skye."

"Then I'll say good-night."

Her hostess duties completed, her temper still firing, albeit silently, she left the room and walked to the stairs. Once on the third floor, she made her way to the last room on the left. During the day, it was a bright open space done in primary colors. A big bed sat by the window overlooking the main pasture. At night, shadows closed in, but seven-year-old Erin was never afraid of the dark. She wasn't afraid of anything. A quality she must have inherited from her father, Skye thought enviously.

Now Erin lay sleeping, a tiny curled-up bump under the covers. Skye sat on the edge of the bed and stared down at her child.

"I love you, Bunny Face," she whispered.

Erin didn't stir.

Skye rose and walked the few feet to her own bedroom. Her younger-by-a-year sister, Izzy, sprawled on the big bed, watching television. She muted the sound when Skye entered.

"Don't you have a TV in your own room?" Skye asked.

"Sure, butusing yours is more fun. Who's the guy?"

"T. J. Boone. You're the one he wants."

Izzy sat up, her dark curly hair a halo around her head. "What are you talking about?"

Skye walked to the bathroom and turned on the tub. While water thundered out, she poured in jasmine-scented bath oil that foamed and made bubbles.

"Jed told TJ. that he'd like him to marry his daughter. TJ. asked about you but Jed informed him that I was the daughter being auctioned off. TJ. paused for a very long time before agreeing that I would do." Skye returned to the bedroom, then swore softly. "Did I remember to bring up a big bottle of wine? Of course not."

Izzy bounced to her feet. "What are you talking about? Of course he wants you. You're gorgeous."

That was stretching it, but Skye wasn't going to refuse the compliment.

"It doesn't matter," she said with a sigh. "I'm not letting Jed pick a husband for me. Been there, done that."

"Bought the T-shirt," Izzy added helpfully.

She'd done more than that. She'd married the man in question because it was what her father wanted. Because it was the right thing to do, or so it had seemed at the time.

"I have a backbone," Skye said, feeling dissatisfied with her life and not clear on why. "I'm sure of it. If I didn't have a backbone, I couldn't walk upright. I'm twenty-six years old, a widow and single mother. Shouldn't I be the one running my life?"

"You are," Izzy said, then shrugged. "Sort of."

"How wonderful. I'm a role model for doormats everywhere."

"You're not a doormat."

Skye shook her head. "Sorry. This should be a pity party for one. I didn't mean to include you. Why don't you go downstairs and flaunt yourself in front of T.J.? Show him what he'll never have."

Izzy frowned. "Are you okay? I can stay and keep you company."

"No, thanks. I'm going to take a bath where I'll be floating in a sea of denial." Because her bad mood wasn't just because of T.J.'s obvious rejection. She wasn't interested in him or any man. It was her father assuming once again he could control her life. Because she'd let him… more than once.

"Sk-ye." Izzy drew the word out into two syllables. "Don't make me sing 'The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow' until you beg for mercy, because I will."

Skye laughed. "Okay. I'll be good. Now run along and make trouble. We'll both feel better for it. I'll be fine. I just need to get some sleep. Everything will look better in the morning."

"Promise?"

"I swear."

Izzy hesitated, then left. Skye returned to the bathroom and turned off the water. She pinned up her hair, then undressed and climbed into the tub. But no matter that she closed her eyes and slowed her breathing, she kept hearing the conversation between T.J. and Jed. And kept getting mad. Mostly at herself. For being the kind of person who did what she was told.

Because she was the good sister. The one who followed the rules. Who did the expected.

"I hate people like that," she said aloud into the empty room. So why had she become one of them?

Izzy waited until T.J. stepped out onto the front porch of the house. She'd grown up lurking in shadows, spying on her older sisters, who seemed to have all the fun. She was used to being stealthy.

When she was sure he hadn't noticed her, she crept up behind him and said, "Hi," in a loud voice. It was hard not to laugh when he jumped.

"Jesus," he yelled as he turned. "You scared me."

"Good. I understand we're soon to be brother and sister. That's very cool. I've always wanted an older brother. You can teach me all kinds of things."

T.J. stood a good ten inches taller than her, but Izzy wasn't the least bit intimidated. She wasn't there to fight fair and would use every advantage to bring the jerk to his knees. Scaring him had just been a happy bonus.

"Brother and sister?"

"You're marrying Skye, aren't you? At least, that's what she said."

TJ. swore, this time more aggressively. "She heard. I didn't mean for her to."

He was standing at the top of the stairs. Izzy thought about giving him a big push, just for the thrill of watching him tumble. "You hesitated when Jed offered you Skye. I can't believe you had the nerve to think about it. She's worth ten of you."

"Wait a minute. My hesitation wasn't about Skye. She's a beautiful woman."

"So were you concerned about the size of your equipment?" Izzy interrupted with a smirk.

"I was making a point with your father." He leaned against the post by the stairs. "And for future reference, I've never had complaints about the size of my equipment."

"Most women are too polite to complain in person. We only tell each other when we're disappointed."

He raised a blond eyebrow. "You have sass."

"I have a lot of things you'll never see."

"Want to bet?"

Izzy liked that he gave as good as he got, but not that he was consorting with Jed, talking about marrying Skye and flirting with her.

"Jed won't take kindly to you playing his daughters against each other. Trust me, he's not a man you want to piss off."

"Maybe he doesn't care which of his daughters I marry."

"You couldn't catch me and even if you could, you couldn't handle me."

"That sounds like a challenge."

She ignored the statement. "Let me be clear. Hurt my sister again, T.J., and looking eye to eye with a snake will seem like a step up for you."

He stared at her feet, then worked his way up. "You think you could take me?"

"Even on a bad day. I fight dirty."

"So do I, little girl."

She filed that piece of information away for future reference. "I'll be reporting our little conversation to my sister. The Titan girls are very loyal to each other. Keep that in mind."

"You're full of advice. What makes you think I need it?"

"You have amateur written all over you."

Mitch Cassidy pulled to a stop at the entrance to the ranch. Although he'd grown up here, he hadn't been back in nearly nine years. He'd expected a few changes—life had a way of moving forward whether he wanted it to or not—but not this.

He stared at the words over the open metal gates. The gates, connected to nothing, were just there for show. "Cassidy Ranch. Home of certified organic beef and free-range poultry."

"What the hell?"

He wasn't sure what offended him the most. The phrase "certified organic" or the word poultry.

"Chickens? We have goddamn chickens?"

He hated chickens. They were loud and messy. And this was Texas. His family ran beef. They had for nearly a hundred years. It was the source of the Cassidy fortune. If some ranch wife wanted to raise a few chickens for eggs or deep frying, the stupid birds were kept out of sight and never talked about. They weren't bragged about in a sign.

His left foot ached. He reached down to rub it only to remember a half second later that he didn't have a left foot anymore. The below-the-knee amputation was the reason he wasn't a SEAL these days. It was the reason he'd finally come home.

He swore again, put the truck in Drive and headed for the main house. In a perfect world, he would quietly reappear at the ranch, easing into a normal life, without anyone noticing. However, though life was a lot of things, it wasn't perfect.

He drove down the nearly mile long private road. White fences lined both sides. There were horses on the right and prize bulls on the left. Prosperity on the hoof.

He rounded a curve, past a grove of trees and saw the house where he'd grown up. It was a sprawling two-story structure with a wraparound porch. Flowers grew waist high, swaying gently in the breeze. It could have been a picture from a postcard. Mitch almost wished it was.

Fidela stood on the porch, straining forward, as if wanting to know the second he arrived. She took off at a run toward the truck, forcing him to stop short of the house.

She might be pushing fifty, but she had the speed of a six-year-old and got to him before he'd awkwardly clambered out of the truck. He landed on gravel and nearly lost his balance as his leg muscles struggled to keep him upright on his new and painful prosthesis.

"You're back!" she said, tears filling her brown eyes. "Finally. I've been praying and praying since you left. God is tired of me asking for your safety. You could have helped, you know. Not done such dangerous work. But no. You like to test my faith."

She cupped his face, then ran her hands across his shoulders and down his arms, as if wanting to make sure he was real.

"You're taller since you left, but so thin. Mitch, such sadness in your eyes. But you're home now, yes? Home with me and Arturo. The ranch will heal you and I will cook all your favorites until you are too fat to ride a horse."

She smiled through her tears, then hugged him with a fierce strength that squeezed the air out of him.

She'd been a part of his life since before he was born.

Another hit...
By JACK
Lip service is the 2nd in a series about Texas sisters. While I'd agree with other reviewers that Skye, the main character, would not be my favorite female lead in a book, the other characters in the story more than make up for it. One of Susan Mallery's many talents in my opinion, is her ability to write very enjoyable secondary characters. Dana, Joss, and even the chickens add to the fun of this book. In addition to the humor though there is also a lot of emotion and drama brought on by Mitch's injury, Titan family dynamics, and the needs of a little girl. This should be a definite read for any Mallery fan, but read Under Her Skin first! Can't wait for the next one, which will be out soon.

Maybe it's just me...maybe I have read too many bad romance novels lately that I have a difficult time now recognizing a good one? Or maybe I am a little bit over all the contemporary romances revolving around these "cute" towns where life is great, everyone loves everyone, and everyone helps each other, (born and raised in a small town and having relatives in other small towns BTW). Don't get me wrong, there have been some good books out there around small towns, Mallery herself being the author of a couple, and that is not why I didn't like the book more. The writing was fine, descriptions good, but I just couldn't feel the connection between the leads. It could have to do with the fact that you hear over and over again about his obsession with another woman. For goodness sake why would anyone want to attempt to compete with that? In my opinion the romance was contrived and not believable at all. The 2 side stories actually held my interest much more than the leads.

Just a fun read...
By Smitten with Reading
My Review:
Susan Mallery consistently writes contemporary romances that I just love to read for an afternoon's escape. Her books are sweet, fun, romantic, witty, and always feature a wonderfully quirky cast of characters. The Fool's Gold series continues to delight my reader's mind. I just really love this series. There is something about continually getting to visit this sweet little town and the wonderful characters that live there, that just makes me happy.

This book is about Nevada, the last of the Hendrix triplets to find love. Her hero is Tucker, although it takes her a while to realize it. Tucker was one of Ethan's (Nevada's brother) friends and when she goes to college where Tucker lives, Ethan tells her to look Tucker up. That results in a friendship between Nevada, Tucker, and Tucker's girlfriend Cat. Tucker doesn't realize that Nevada actually has feelings for him, but Cat does, and in a twisted scheme, Cat "gifts" Nevada with Tucker. This results in the most horribly disappointing five minutes of Nevada's life. She hasn't seen him since until she walks into a job interview for her dream job ten years later. Needless to say, they have some issues that they need to work out.

Such a fun book. I love that the history between Nevada and Tucker is so embarrassingly horrifying for both of them. It makes it a really fun set-up for the book. But beyond that and before the romance truly starts to develop, I like that Tucker & Nevada develop a true friendship and comradery both at work and outside of it. They both have their faults and have both made mistakes in their history, but these are definitely two people that you can like and cheer for as a reader.

There are also some fabulous side stories in this one...the romance between Will & Jo, Nevada's mom & Max (OMG, I don't know if I have ever laughed as hard as I did when Nevada walked in on them), and even the addition of Cat and her mixed up sexuality. It was such a fun book to read. I had quite a few laugh out loud moments and I read this on a day where I was really sick and miserable, so that is saying something.

This has been such a fun series. I have loved getting to know the triplets this summer. I am so glad that we get three more installments of it next summer. Whooohooo!!!

Reyes stood on the roof of his Budapest fortress, five stories up, his feet balanced precariously on the highest ledge. Above him, moonlight seeped red and yellow from the sky, blood mixed with fickle gold, dark mixed with light, wounds freshly cut in the endless expanse of black velvet.

He gazed down at the gloomy, waiting void beneath him, the taunting ground opening its arms as if begging to embrace him. Thousands of years, and I'm still reduced to this.

Frigid wind blustered, ruffling his hair in every direction, tickling his bare chest, the hated butterfly etched up onto his neck and the remembered lifeblood splattered there. Not his blood, though. No, not his, but his friend's. Every stroke of hair against that phantom evidence of life and death was like kindling thrown into the fire of his blazing guilt.

So many times he'd come here, wishing for things that could never be. So many times he'd prayed for absolution, relief from his daily torment and the demon inside him responsible…relief from his utter dependence on self-mutilation.

His prayers had never been answered. Would never be answered. This was what he was, what he would always be. And his agony would only increase. Once an immortal warrior to the gods, he was now a Lord of the Underworld, possessed by one of the many spirits formerly locked inside dimOuniak. From favor to dishonor, beloved to despised. From happiness to constant misery.

He ground his teeth. Mortals knew dimOuniak as Pandora's box; he knew it as the source of his eternal downfall. He and his friends had defiantly opened it all those centuries ago; now he and his friends were the box, each holding a demon inside himself.

Jump, his demon beseeched.

His demon: Pain. His constant companion. The tempting whisper in the back of his mind, the dark entity that craved unspeakable evil. The supernatural force he battled every damned minute of every damned day.

Jump.

"Not yet." A few more seconds of anticipation, of knowing most of his bones would shatter on contact. He grinned at the thought. The razor-sharp bone shards would cut his injured, swollen organs and those organs would burst like water balloons; his skin would rip from the excess fluid and this time the lifeblood that drained would be his own. Agony, such blissful agony, would consume him.

For a little while, anyway.

Slowly his smile faded. Within days—hours, if he failed to hurt himself badly enough—his body would heal itself, totally and completely. He would wake up, whole again, Pain once more a commanding force inside his mind, too loud to be denied. But oh, for those few blessed ticks of the clock before his bones began to realign, before his organs began to weave back together and his skin to reconnect, before blood once more pumped through his veins, he would experience nirvana. The ultimate paradise. Rapture of the sweetest kind. He would writhe in the exquisite pleasure the pain brought with it—his only source of pleasure. The demon would purr with utter contentment, so drunk on the sensation it was unable to speak, and Reyes would experience such blissful peace.

For a little while. Always, only, a little while.

"I do not need another reminder about how fleeting my peace is," he muttered to drown the depressing thought. He knew how quickly time passed. A year sometimes felt like nothing more than a day. A day sometimes felt like nothing more than a minute.

And yet, both were sometimes infinite to him. Just one of the many contradictions of life as a Lord of the Underworld.

Jump, Pain said. Then, more insistently, Jump! Jump!

"I told you. Just a few seconds more." Once again Reyes glanced at the ground. Jagged rocks winked in that bleeding moonlight, the clear puddles surrounding them rippling in the wind. Mist rose like ghostly fingers, summoning him closer, wonderfully closer. "Plunging a blade into your enemy's throat kills him, yes," he told the demon, "but then it's over, done, and you have nothing left to anticipate."

Jump! A snarled command, impatient and needy, a child throwing a tantrum.

"Soon."

Jumpjumpjump!

Yes, sometimes demons really were like whiny human children. Reyes shoved a hand through his tangled hair, a few strands ripping from his scalp. He knew of only one way to shut his other half up. Obedience. Why he'd even tried to resist and savor the moment, he didn't know.

Jump!

"Maybe this time you'll be sent back to hell," he muttered. A man could wish, anyway. Finally, he splayed his arms. Closed his eyes. Leaned…

"Come down from there," he heard a voice say from behind him.

Reyes's eyelids popped open at the unwelcome intrusion, and he stiffened. He rebalanced but didn't turn. He knew why Lucien was here, and he was too ashamed to face his friend. While the warrior understood what he dealt with because of his demon, there would be no understanding what he'd done.

"That's the plan, coming down. Leave and I'll see that it gets done."

"You know what I meant." There was no hint of laughter in Lucien's voice. "I need to talk to you."

The dewy scent of roses suddenly saturated the air, thick and lush and so unexpected in the late-winter night that Reyes would have sworn he'd been transported to a spring meadow. A human would have found the aroma hypnotic, lulling, almost drugging, and would have done anything the warrior asked. Reyes merely found it annoying. After thousands of years together, Lucien should have known the fragrance held no power over him.

"We'll talk tomorrow," he said tightly.

Jump!

"We'll talk now. Afterward, you may do whatever you please."

After Reyes admitted his newest crime? No, thanks. Guilt, shame and grief might bring emotional pain, but none would soothe his demon in any way. Only physical suffering offered relief, which was why Reyes had always guarded his emotional well-being so diligently.

Yes, and you've done such a great job at it.

He ran his tongue over his teeth, unsure who had whispered that sarcastic little gem. Himself or Pain. "I'm in a bad place right now, Lucien."

"As are the others. As am I."

"You, at least, have a woman to comfort you."

"You have friends. You have me." Lucien, keeper of the demon of Death, was tasked with escorting human souls to the hereafter, whether the hereafter was heaven or the deepest fires of hell. He was stoic, ever calm—most of the time. He'd become their leader, the man every warrior residing in this Budapest fortress turned to for guidance and aid. "Talk to me."

Reyes didn't like to deny his friend, but he told himself it was better that Lucien did not learn the terrible thing he'd done.

Even as Reyes thought it, he recognized the lie for what it was: a shameful lack of courage on his part. "Lucien," he began, only to stop. Growl.

"The tracking dye has worn off and no one knows where Aeron is," Lucien said. "No one knows what he's doing, if he's the one who slaughtered those humans in the States. Maddox said he called you right after Aeron escaped the dungeon. Then Sabin told me you left Rome and the Temple of the Unspoken Ones in a hurry. Want to tell me where you went?"

"No." Truth. He didn't. "But you may rest assured Aeron is no longer able to slaughter humans."

There was a pause, the rose scent intensifying.

"How do you know for sure?" The question possessed a bite.

Reyes shrugged.

"Why don't I tell you what I think happened?" Where Lucien's tone had been sharp before, it was now threaded with expectation. And fear? "You went after Aeron, hoping to protect the girl."

The girl. Aeron had kidnapped the girl. Aeron had been ordered by the new gods, the Titans, to murder the girl. Reyes had taken one look at the girl and allowed her to invade his most private thoughts, color his every action and reduce him to a lovesick fool.

With only a glance she had changed his life, and not for the better. And yet, the fact that Lucien refused to say her name pissed Reyes off royally. Reyes desired that girl more than he desired a hammer to the skull. For Pain, that was saying something.

"Well?" Lucien prompted.

"You're right," Reyes said through tight lips. Why not admit it? he suddenly thought. His emotions were in turmoil and remaining quiet had only roused them further. More than that, his friends could not hate him any more than he hated himself. "I went after Aeron."

The admission hung in the air, as heavy as shackles, and he paused.

"You found him."

"I found him." Reyes squared his shoulders. "I also… destroyed him."

Rocks crumbled under Lucien's boots as he stalked forward. "You killed him?"

"Worse." Still, Reyes did not turn. He peered down longingly at the still-waiting ground. "I buried him."

The pounding of footsteps ceased abruptly. "You buried him but did not kill him?" Confusion drifted from Lucien's voice. "I do not understand."

"He was about to kill Danika. I could see the torment in his eyes and knew he did not want to do it. I cut him down to slow him and he thanked me, Lucien. Thanked me. He begged me to stop him permanently. He begged me to take his head. But I couldn't do it. I raised my sword, but I just couldn't do it. So I had Kane collect Maddox's chains and bring them to me. Since Maddox no longer needs them, I used them to lock Aeron underground."

Reyes had once been forced to shackle Maddox to a bed every night, cursed to stab his friend in the stomach six hated times, knowing the warrior would awaken in the morning and Reyes would have to kill him all over again. Some friend I am.

After hundreds of years, Maddox had come to accept the curse. Restraining him, however, had been a necessity. As the keeper of Violence, Maddox tended to attack without warning. Even his friends. And as strong as the warrior was, he would have rent man-made metal in seconds. So they'd commandeered links forged by the gods, links no one, not even an immortal, could open without the proper key.

Like Maddox, Aeron had been—was...

No Pain To Read This Book
By Karen Entzminger
The Lords of the Underworld is a great series, and the story about Reyes and Danika definitely is a winner. The reader meets all kinds of people: Lords, gods and goddesses, fairies, harpies, and assorted demons and monsters. Start at the beginning with Into the Dark and then The Darkest Night. I actually bought most of them and look forward to the next book, The Darkest Torment.

This is the third story of this series!
By BLH
I thoroughly enjoyed all of the stories so far and this one was no different! This one was about Reyes, "Pain" and his woman. I have to tell you that at times I cried. There are some "down" things but it still ends well!!!!

Book 3 in a great series
By B.E. Love
After meeting on vacation Jewels and Piers spend the night together, then days later while Jewels begins her new job she finds out that Piers is her new boss and is fired that day. Five months later Jewels has nowhere to turn but Piers when her Pregnancy turns high risk and isn't allowed to leave the hospital without someone to watch over her. Piers is shocked to find Jewels five months pregnant when he sees her and more shocked when she tells him that the baby is his. But Piers has been though this before only to find out later that the baby wasn't his so now he doesn't believe Jewel either. But piers agree's to take care of Jewel while she's pregnant with the stipulation that he will get a paternity test when he baby is born. Jewels can't believe he automatically thinks she lying but with no where else to turn she agree with Piers plan, Then Piers and Jewels fall in love but a misunderstanding threatens it all. I really liked this book, not quiet as much as book one but it was a good fast read with a strong possessive hero and strong heroine. Everyone from the previous two books are all back together in this the third installment and I really enjoyed the updates on everyones lives. Maya Banks is a great author who really knows how to get her readers connected and invested in her books. This was a beautiful story about ove and family.

I'm Going to Treat You Horribly, Then Seduce You!
By DAE
Firstly, I hate reissued books that don't make it very clear that the book isn't new. The book I read is simply called "The Affair." The only reason I read this book was because I reviewed several other Maya Banks books for my job, and wanted to see if my assessment of her books was correct.

For some reason it never dawned on me that these horrible men are written and thought up by women. These men who are supposed to be the ideal men, but have nothing ideal about them besides money, are created by women for women. Am I really supposed like a man like Piers? He brings all his baggage from his past and places it on someone else's lap. He doesn't even bother trying to learn anything about Jewel. Piers basically calls Jewel a conniving whore from jump. Then proceeds to take her on a roller coaster ride of "I hate you, I want you;" "Get away/Never leave." Of the 192 pages in the book, the last 10-20 pages include: Piers finds out things about Jewel that he could have easily found out by asking; Piers brooding over being such a d---- to Jewel; and, everything turning out awesome!

5 blue ribbons from Romance Junkies
By C. Dionne
Jewel Henley made a snap decision to seize the opportunity to take a few days for herself in paradise. The whole situation couldn't be more perfect. She's obtained a temporary job as the assistant to the owner of the Anetakis hotel for the duration of her stay. The last thing she expects is to meet a gorgeous man and throw caution to the wind for an evening. The morning after is where the trouble starts. How was she supposed to know that tall, dark and dreamy man is her new boss?

Piers Anetakis is stunned to learn that his one-night lover is to be his new temporary assistant. His discomfort with mixing business and pleasure leads to Jewel's being fired - which wasn't at all what he'd intended to happen. He's spent the past five months actively searching for her to no avail so he's stunned when she suddenly calls him out of the blue needing his help.

Jewel was utterly humiliated and furious over the way Piers had her dismissed from her position. She was even escorted from the hotel by two security guards. With no money and no home of her own, Jewel opts to return to San Francisco and her friend Kirk's apartment which he lets her use whenever she has need of it. Depressing as her situation is it becomes even more complex when she discovers that she's pregnant - and there are complications. In need of help she opts to call the father - Piers but isn't exactly prepared for his reaction. Piers insists they marry but he makes it perfectly clear that he expects a paternity test as proof that he's the father.

Jewel fears her dreams of a `real family' will never come true. Piers is so angry and demanding that she feels utterly overwhelmed. It's as if her desires don't matter, he simply steps in and starts taking over. Jewel isn't about to let him walk all over her and she isn't shy about letting him know that if she does agree to this marriage than she'll have a few demands of her own. Jewel and Piers relationship has the potential to be a love match but there's a huge trust issue standing in the way of their happiness. Will Piers be able to let go of his past and embrace the love Jewel offers before it's too late?

THE TYCOON'S SECRET AFFAIR is the third and final book in Maya Banks' ANETAKIS TYCOON series. Jewel and Piers come from vastly different backgrounds but they have issues in their pasts that deeply affect how they relate to each other. There's no doubt that there is genuine affection and passion between them and yet they really don't know each other very well. Ms. Banks really pulls this whole series together in this fast paced emotion filled read. We're gifted with the opportunity to revisit Piers' brothers Theron and Chrysander and their wives and learn what they're up to - as well as what antics Marley and Bella have come up with to annoy their husbands. The Anetakis brothers share a closeness that's enviable and that devotion and love extends to each other's spouses. Maya Banks not only pens a beautiful romance but she also brings together Jewel and Piers pasts in a healing fashion that will truly pull at the reader's heartstrings.

While it's not absolutely necessary, I do recommend picking up copies of the other two books in the ANETAKIS TYCOON series. They are: THE TYCOON'S PREGNANT MISTRESS The Tycoon's Pregnant Mistress (Silhouette Desire)
and TYCOON'S REBEL BRIDE The Tycoon's Rebel Bride (Silhouette Desire)

What did it say about her relationship with her family that the person Cassidy Lambert was most excited to see when she got home wasn't a person at all, but her border collie, Sky?

Sky had been her father's birthday surprise for her fourteen years ago. Sky was loyal, loving and, most important, uncomplicated. Cassidy knew, no matter what, that Sky would always love her and think she was the most wonderful person on the planet.

The same could not be said of her family.

Cassidy lowered the driver's side window of her vintage 1980 Ford pickup to let in the warm spring air, then cranked up the tunes as she barreled along the 80 toward home. She knew she should reduce her speed, not only to avoid a ticket but also to prolong the drive, which she was quite enjoying.

But she was on a high. After five long years she was finally done with late nights at the library, relentless assignments and tough exams. She'd worked hard to complete the Accounting Master's Program at Montana State University, but she'd done it, and hopefully soon would follow a high-paying job at one of the top accounting firms in Billings.

Josh Brown—her friend and would-be boyfriend if she could make up her mind about that—also had plans to move to Billings. Josh had wanted to come with her to Coffee Creek Ranch. He said it was time he met her family.

"I wouldn't be so anxious if I were you," she'd told him. He thought she was teasing, but she wasn't.

"They can't be that bad. Look at you. Unless you were adopted?"

"No such luck." She had her mother's delicate features and the long, lanky body that came from the Lambert side of the family. She had a soft heart—like her father. But was also headstrong and stubborn—like her mom.

Yet despite all the family resemblances, she'd always been a misfit. Part of the problem came from being the only girl in a family with three boys—four if you counted her foster brother, Jackson, who'd been with the family since she was nine. She knew it wasn't her imagination that her mother was harder on her than the guys. And her father had treated her differently, too, when he was alive.

For one thing, he'd built three cottages by the small lake on their property for each of his sons to live in. But nothing for her.

No doubt he'd expected her to one day get married and go live with her husband. But being excluded that way had hurt.

And it still did.

The boys had been relentless teases, too. They didn't mean to be cruel, but they never cut her a break, either. Even though she could ride as well as any of them, she couldn't match them in strength. And, oh, how they'd loved to taunt her about that. Especially Brock…

Tears fogged her vision, and she slid her sunglasses up on her head so she could rub them away. Though almost a year had passed since the accident that had taken her youngest brother's life—just an hour before he'd been about to marry Winnie Hayes—the loss still felt fresh.

Brock may have driven her crazy, but she'd loved him, living in hope that one day he'd stop treating her like a bratty little sister and they might become friends.

Now they would never have that chance.

Cassidy drove over a series of three gentle hills before arriving at the smattering of buildings and the weathered sign proclaiming that she'd arrived at the town of Coffee Creek. She put on her indicator light, intending to stop at the Cinnamon Stick Cafe for some fortification before continuing the last fifteen minutes to the ranch.

It was Wednesday morning, the last week of April, an hour before noon. She'd written her final exam the previous afternoon, had spent a night on the town with all her friends, including Josh, then loaded her car for an early departure that hadn't included breakfast.

So she was hungry.

She angle-parked in front of the pretty cafe that was owned by Brock's former fiancée. Winnie had taken Brock's death really hard and had gone to live at her parents' farm in Highwood immediately following the funeral. Cassidy stayed in touch with her via Facebook and knew that Winnie hoped to return to Coffee Creek eventually. Apparently she'd developed some health issues that weren't serious, but required some time to settle.

In the meantime her cafe was being operated by Winnie's best friend—and Cassidy's new sister-in-law— Laurel. Laurel Sheridan had flown in from New York for Brock and Winnie's wedding and had ended up extending her stay to take care of Winnie's cafe while her friend was convalescing. She'd also fallen in love with Corb and the two had been married last September in New York City.

Then in March they'd had a baby—adorable little Stephanie Olive Lambert was another reason Cassidy was stopping at the Cinnamon Stick. Hopefully Laurel and the baby would be there.

She was dying for a cuddle with her new little niece.

Cassidy parked, hopped out of her truck, then paused to stretch her back and her arms. One thing about older trucks—they sure weren't built for comfort. Still, she patted the hood affectionately before heading toward the cafe.

A hand-painted sign hung over the door, and two wooden benches promised a place to sit in the sun and enjoy your coffee once you'd placed your order.

Inside she was welcomed by the scent of freshly ground coffee beans and the luscious aromas of butter, sugar and cinnamon. She'd come during a lull and the place was quiet. Two older women sat at one of the two booths, engrossed in conversation. Behind the counter, Laurel was softly singing a silly song about hedgehogs. She had her back to the door, busy with dishes, but she spotted Cassidy's reflection in a carefully positioned mirror and broke into a big smile.

"Cassidy! You're home!" Laurel stopped to scoop up her two-month-old daughter from the playpen. "Look who's here, Steph. It's your auntie Cassidy."

Cassidy was already holding out her arms for the bundle. "I hope she isn't making shy yet."

"Oh, she's still too young for that. Besides, she's getting used to new faces. We just got back to work last week and I swear our business has tripled. It seems everyone in the area is finding an excuse to drop in for a coffee and to say hello to the newest Lambert."

Cassidy listened to all of this with a smile, at the same time noticing how happy her sister-in-law appeared. Pretty, too. Her long red hair was pulled back in a ponytail, but it seemed thicker and glossier than ever. And her fair skin was literally glowing.

Laurel deposited a kiss on Cassidy's cheek as she handed over her daughter, who had gained several pounds since Cassidy had seen her last.

"Oh, you're so cute! Look—she has Corb's dimple."

"I know. Isn't it adorable? And only on the left cheek, just like her dad."

Cassidy sighed as Stephanie cuddled in, soaking up the smooches that her aunt couldn't resist planting on her downy soft head. Her wispy hair was coming in orange. And curly.

"How are you doing, precious? Do you like working with your mommy in the cafe?"

The baby looked up at the sound of Cassidy's voice, and Cassidy was amused to see that she had the Lambert green eyes, as well. Stephanie was staring at her intently, and only when she raised her little hand, awkwardly reaching up, did Cassidy realize she was entranced by the sunglasses that were still resting on her head.

"She's just started noticing her hands a few weeks ago," Laurel commented. "Sometimes she stares at them for minutes at a time. It's so cute. But here I am, talking endlessly about my wonderful baby, again." Laurel rolled her eyes. "What's new with you? How were your final exams?"

"They went well, I think. I won't have my marks for a few weeks."

"Can I get you a coffee and a cinnamon bun for the road?"

Hearing the door open behind her, Cassidy moved out of the way so the newcomer could enter. "You read my mind, thanks."

"Make that a double order, Winnie," said a deep voice behind her. "And leave some space for cream in the coffee."

Cassidy knew that voice. Slowly she turned, holding Stephanie like a shield between her and the tall, broad-shouldered man who'd just entered the cafe.

Sure enough, there stood Dan Farley. The local vet had some Native American blood, which accounted for his high cheekbones, jet-black hair and dark, almond-shaped eyes. Though he'd spoken to Winnie, it was Cas-sidy he was looking at, with cool dislike.

"Hey, Farley." Darn her voice for coming out so soft and weak. She lifted her chin. "How are things?"

"Busy."

He knew she'd been going to college in Bozeman, and must have noticed the suitcases and boxes in the back of her truck, but he didn't ask about her studies or show any interest in whether or not she was moving back to Coffee Creek. Stepping past her as if she were nothing more than an inanimate obstacle, he made his way to the counter, where he pulled out his wallet.

Heck and darn, but the man had a way about him. Cassidy glanced at the two women at the back to see if they felt it, too. Sure enough they both had their eyes on Coffee Creek's sexy vet. One of them pretended to fan her face with her hand. The other laughed and winked at Cassidy.

Cassidy didn't wink back.

He wasn't that good-looking.

She gave him another glance, seeing only his profile and long, muscular build.

Okay, maybe he was that good-looking.

Still, he probably hated her and she had only herself to blame.

Winnie set two coffees in to-go cups on the counter, then bagged them each one of the homemade cinnamon buns baked fresh every day by ex-bronc rider Vince Butterfield. A veteran of the rodeo circuit and a member of the Cowboy Hall of Fame, Vince had licked a lifelong dependence on alcohol and in his sixties had begun a new career as a baker. His mother's old recipe for melt-in-your-mouth sticky buns, thickly topped with frosting, was his new claim to fame.

Five minutes ago, Cassidy had been craving one of them desperately. Now her stomach churned at the thought. What were the chances that she and Farley would happen into the cafe at the same time? Pretty darn slim. So slim, in fact, that she hadn't run across him here once in the past four years.

Other than at the church last July, she hadn't seen him anywhere else, either.

If he was called out to the ranch when she happened to be home, she always made herself scarce. She'd avoided him at the funeral. If his name came up in conversation with her brothers, she tried not to listen.

And now here he stood, just a few feet away. Making it very hard not to remember. But no. She would not think back to that night. She couldn't bear it.

"So where are you off to now, Farley?" Laurel asked, her tone friendly. Everyone in the Coffee Creek area called the vet by his last name. Probably to avoid confusion with his father, also named Dan, whom he'd worked with before the elder Farley and his wife had retired to Arizona.

Farley glanced briefly at Cassidy again, before answering. "Coffee Creek Ranch."

Though there were plenty of reasons why the vet might have been called out to her family's ranch, Cas-sidy's first thought was for Sky. At fourteen years of age, every day was a blessing. "What's wrong?"

"Your mother's young palomino is sick. Sounds serious."

"Lucky Lucy? Oh, no." She was glad Sky was okay, but this news was almost as bad. Her mother had bought the beautiful three-year-old palomino just this year and Cassidy loved her. Lucy had a wild heart but a gentle soul. Though she was her mother's horse, Cassidy had felt a special connection with the mare from the first time she'd ridden her.

"Any idea what the problem is?"

"From the symptoms Jackson described, sounds like strangles."

"Really?" In all of her twenty-five years they'd never had a case of strangles on the ranch. She didn't even know that much about it, other than it was a highly contagious, serious infection of the nose and lymph nodes.

"I'll have to examine the horse and run some tests to be sure." He added a generous amount of cream to his coffee, fitted the cup with a lid, then grabbed one of the bagged cinnamon buns. "See you later, Laurel. And thanks."

No word to Cassidy, whose ranch he was heading for.

She might as well be an empty bar stool for all the attention he'd paid to her. Wordless herself, she watched as a half-dozen long strides took him out the door.

The cafe fell silent then, and Cassidy realized that Laurel was looking at her, eyebrows raised.

"What's up with you and the vet?"

Cassidy shifted Stephanie to her other arm. She'd planned on staying for a while to visit, but the bad news about the ranch had her suddenly anxious to get moving again.

"Why do you ask?"

"Are you kidding? Sparks were flying here, and they weren't the good kind. Farley isn't the chattiest of people, but I've never seen him be downright rude before. And the way he all but ignored you? That was rude."

Yes. It sure had been.

"I guess he figures he has his reasons." Cassidy went around the counter to deliver Stephanie back to her playpen. She didn't seem very happy about being set down until her mother wound up a musical mobile that had been affixed to the side of the playpen.

"How do you get any work done with such a cute distraction around?" Cassidy bent to give her niece one last kiss.

"It's taken some adjusting, by me and the staff. Eugenia and Dawn have been great. And even Vince has taken a few turns at rocking Stephanie when she's being fussy."

"That I'd like to see." Vince was the epitome of the tough, silent cowboy from another era.

"I know. Isn't it amazing what babies bring out in a person?"

"It sure is." Though Farley hadn't seemed moved by the baby at all. Of course, if she hadn't happened to be there, he probably would have been much friendlier to Laurel and her daughter. "Is there anything I can do to help you before I leave?"

"We're fine," Laurel assured her. "Eugenia's shift is starting in about half an hour. That'll give me a chance to take Stephanie upstairs, feed her and put her down for her nap. She's a great sleeper, thank goodness. Gives me a couple free hours every afternoon."

"Sounds like a good system." Cassidy counted out money for her order, then picked up her drink and her pastry. Now that Farley was gone, her appetite was returning. "I'd better get going."

"Wait one minute. You're really not going to give me the scoop on you and Farley?"

"Nope." Cassidy gave Laurel a warm hug. "I'll be back to have a longer visit in a few days. Or I may drop in on you and Corb at the ranch one evening."

"I'll look forward to it. But be warned. Next time I see you, you better be ready to tell me what's going on with you and the vet. He's considered the most eligible bachelor in town, you know."

Cassidy wasn't surprised. The guy had presence. And those eyes…

"The single women of Coffee Creek needn't worry," she assured Laurel. "I'm not going to be any competition where Dan Farley is concerned."

She was out the door before Laurel had time for a comeback. Not that it mattered. She was so not going to tell Laurel about the history between her and Farley. She'd never told anyone and she'd bet Farley hadn't, either.

Her Cowboy Dilemma
By Suzy Snoozy
Read in February, 2013

Book 2 in the series Coffee Creek, Montana by C.J.Carmichael.This was another enjoyable read, especially being able to read it so close to the first book. Cassidy is the only girl and youngest of the Lambert family. She left home to get her accounting degree and away from her domineering, and manipulative mother. She has returned after graduation, awaiting for a second call back on job interview she had in school, that was in Billings. Looking forward to see her dog Sky, speaks of her family relationship. Always the tomboy, teased mercilessly by her brothers; yet following after them and neighbor Dan Farley. She felt left out by her dad, too, who built cabins on the lake for the boys, but not her. The loss of Brock, who she was closet to still stung, but she was an auntie to Corb's and Laurel's little girl, Stephanie. Her plan was to kick back til her call for the job came, but a medical emergency occurred on the ranch. Dan Farley was the vet, and it was uncomfortable between them because of a high school incidence.
Cassidy and Farley had many interactions, associated with the medical quarantine. Her own old horse became sick and they both worked to care for him. An episode where Sky, was attacked by coyotes, had Cassidy going to Farley's home/clinic. The relationship between them was one where one could not express their true feelings and the other was afraid of what their feelings were.
Maddie Turner, Olive's sister, their aunt was shunned by the family. She had been laying flowers at Brock's cross, where the accident occurred. Cassidy being curious why the shunning and underlying problems, found out where Sky came from and nothing else. The quarantine at her ranch was lifted and no call back for the job, but her college boyfriend Josh was working there.
Cassidy barrel-raced when younger, and had been working with her mother's horse. Lucy was the first horse to be sick, as it turned out, was because her mother took her to train for barrel racing at a ranch that had the illness. Her mother tried manipulating her to stay, which only pushed Cassidy further away. Cassidy and Farley distanced themselves, catching up at a farm where she teaching barrel-racing.Her call had come for the interview and job and move to Billings. In the meantime Winnie had Brock's son, and it was up to Olive to make peace and bring her and the grandchild to the ranch. Cassidy found the job and city living were suffocating and Farley realized he couldn't breathe without Cassidy.
The eldest B.J.Lambert's story is next. He left home at 18 to the rodeo, made a name for himself and only visits rarely.

Second chances
By S. Frank
Very good book. Cassidy has finally finished her schooling and is ready to get an accounting job in the city. When she comes home for a visit she ends up in the middle of an emergency with the horses and ends up taking care of them. This puts her in frequent contact with veterinarian Dan Farley. She had had a crush on him as a teenager, then did something stupid that made him angry. They've been adversaries ever since.

I really liked both Cassidy and Dan. Cassidy had had a crush on Dan when she was younger. He was best friends with her brothers and she spent a lot of time tagging after them. When she was twenty one he asked her out to a dance. While there she got scared of the intensity of her feelings for him and treated him badly. Since then he has been very cold to her whenever they met. When she arrives at the ranch she ends up having to deal with him as the vet for the sick horses. With four more years of maturity she is able to offer Dan the apology he deserves and they come to a truce. Once they did and spent some time together I could see how a much better relationship was developing. She is really enjoying her time back on the ranch, being with the animals again and enjoying the open spaces. I really loved seeing how happy she was being back on the ranch. But Cassidy is still determined to get a job in the city and away from her controlling mother. Olive is doing everything she can to push Cassidy and Dan together and to get Cassidy to stay on the ranch. She is so obvious about it that it embarrasses Cassidy and also makes her angry. Meanwhile Cassidy knows that her feelings for Dan are growing stronger but she refuses to consider a future for them that involves her staying in Coffee Creek. If it hadn't been for Olive's manipulative ways Cassidy probably would have made her decisions much sooner, but instead they caused Cassidy to dig in her heels. I did like the decisions she made at the end and how she was able to start standing up for herself.

Dan was a great guy. He was best friends with Cassidy's brothers and remembered her from when she was a little kid. When she was seventeen he suddenly realized that he didn't think of her as a sister anymore, but also that she was way too young for those feelings. He did his best to avoid her until he finally get the courage to ask her out when she was twenty one. He was crushed by her behavior that night and chalked it up to her being a spoiled brat. Now he has to deal with her again and all he can see to start with is her determination to get away from the ranch. He is still attracted to her which makes him angry because he doesn't want to fall for her again, thinking that she is still the selfish girl he remembered. But as they spend time together caring for the horses and then her dog, he sees that the caring woman is still there, just buried beneath the surface she shows to others. Dan had a great capacity for love that showed in the way he took care of the animals he treated and also in the way that he dealt with the people who were attached to those animals. It became clear that Dan had transferred all those feelings he had for Cassidy to the animals. He had also realized that no one ever made him feel the way he did about her. He had amazing strength of will to resist being with her for a short term fling knowing that he wanted her in his life permanently. I loved the way that he went after her at the end.

There is also still a good amount of tension in the family as they are still dealing with Brock's death. The truth about Winnie and the baby comes out and the family has to decide how to handle that also. I liked the way that everyone is watching Olive to make sure she behaves. There is also some minor setting up for the next book.

Finding what you truly want in your heart
By Kimberly
won this book on Goodreads.com, thank you C.J Carmichael for that. Her Cowboy Dilemma was an awesome book. Cassidy comes home after finishing school, she intends to relax and enjoy her time home at the ranch until she gets the call from the accounting job in Billings, but that doesn't happen horses get sick and are quarantined, so she tends to them. during the weeks she is tending to the sick horses she gets closer to Dan Farley Vet doctor, her brothers best friend and the guy she blew off four years ago. He was frosty at first towards her but starts to melt as the weeks go by. and oh we can not forget about Olive the very manipulative and controlling mother who can't keep out of her kids personal lives, she is one piece of work lol glad she ain't my mother. I can't believe what she did and at first doesn't own up to it, not nice. Some secrets are revealed but many more to learn about. Cassidy resist all matchmaking skills from her mother and the one time her brother Corb, his wife Laurel and her foster brother Jackson try one, she blew up after that because she is very determined to get that accounting job and she says that is what she wants but her heart wasn't in it. This book was bout Cassidy following her heart even if her mother was right lol. I loved this book, it was heartbreaking, sweet and romantic. I enjoyed reading Her Cowboy Dilemma I can not wait until Promise from a Cowboy in July and Cowboy Christmas in October. C.J Carmichael you are an awesome author.
