Sam Cooper ("Coop") has just become the most eligible bachelor in New York City. Now that he has foiled a jewelry-store robbery and has been rewarded with the ring of his choice, single women all over the city are fawning over the crime reporter. But Coop isn't interested in the admirers sending racy underwear his way. His attention is centered solely on Lexie Davis, the only woman in the city who claims not to be interested in his bachelor status.

Instead, free-spirited Lexie is interested in Coop's antique ring, and its—potentially scandalous—history in her family. But Coop is quickly becoming more than just her route to the ring. When his investigation starts to uncover the truth, will she trust her heart—and her family secrets—to this most eligible bachelor?

From Publishers Weekly
In this entertaining and sexy romance, Sam Cooper becomes the city's most eligible bachelor after foiling a jewelry store robbery. Lexie Davis, however, is only interested in the ring Coop chose as his reward, for her grandmother Charlotte owns the matching necklace. But Davis's attitude changes when she meets Cooper and sparks fly, much to the excitement of Lexie's feisty grandma and her longtime friend Sylvia. As Coop and Lexie delve into the ring's dubious history, they realize that their attraction is more than skin deep: Coop understands Lexie's self-consciousness with her family and Lexie believes in Coop's writing dreams. While the pair cannot deny their passion and growing commitment, Lexie's wandering spirit and Coop's resistance to change leave them feeling cold. This fun and romantic summer read, while occasionally over the top, will please readers with its mischievous characters, red-hot passionate encounters, and spirited plot.

From Booklist
Lexie is a world traveler to the dismay of her proper parents and the delight of her equally free-spirited grandmother, who encourages her to follow her dreams. Crime-beat reporter Sam Cooper foils a jewelry-store robbery on his lunch hour, and the grateful owner presents Coop with a gaudy antique ring (unaware that it was stolen decades ago) in thanks. Coop then gains new empathy for the subjects of his investigations after first being feted as the city’s newest hero on the popular Bachelor Blog, then burglarized by someone trying to recover the ring. When Lexie notices that the ring matches her grandmother’s necklace and accosts Coop, matters heat up for everyone involved. The first in best-seller Phillips’ fast-moving and sexy new contemporary romance series portraying heroic bachelors of New York City offers an intriguing premise but needs more attention to detail. Nonetheless, her many readers will clamor for this and successive Most Eligible Bachelor titles. --Lynne Welch

Fun and frothy romance
By MaryBookSwarm
Carly Phillips's books are always a fun read and this one is no exception. Coop and Lexie are fantastic characters, and I love their interactions. A bored reporter by day, novelist by night, Sam Cooper (Coop) foils a jewelry store robbery and is given a ring as a reward. Turns out this ring has a past--and Lexie Davis recognizes it as a match for her grandmother's favorite necklace. She sets out to buy it from Coop but he's already tracking its history and has found out it was reported stolen many years ago. He's not quite so willing to let it--or Lexie--out of his sight.

Coop's got some history that makes him a little wary when he finds out Lexie, a Web designer, loves to travel and hasn't set down firm roots (she lives with her grandmother). Lexie is worried about getting involved with a guy who wants to change her and prevent her from globe-trotting like she loves to do.

Besides the fast-paced banter, I really enjoyed the mystery Phillips includes in this story and, in solving the mystery, how the characters come together to have their HEA (happily ever after). KISS ME IF YOU CAN is as tasty as a cold root beer float on a hot summer day!

Hot Read

Talk about being in the right place at the right time...Sam Cooper, crime beat reporter, made his own front page story by foiling a jewelry heist. As the hero dujour, he was given a reward from the grateful jeweler's daughter, an ostentatious ring with a past and he was named the most eligible bachelor in New York City by The Bachelor Blog. What woman wouldn't want a man who looks like sex on legs, isn't afraid to do what's right and already has the ring?

Sam has a side job as a mystery/thrill writer and the more he learns about the ring the more his creative juices flow to get to the bottom of a cold case file. Enter Lexie Davis, world traveler and web designer extraordinaire. Lexie too has an interest in the history of the ring but on a more familial level.

The attraction is almost instant and the chemistry is hot! One of the aspects of this novel that really appealed to me was that Sam and Lexie both acknowledge that they feel the attraction and don't allow personal pride to get in the way of exploring what might be there. As with all great love stories there are difficulties and past relationship issues that complicate the budding relationship. Both Lexie and Coop seem to actually want to make things work. So many times I've read books where the main characters spend more time fighting to deny their attraction rather than working towards their HEA. This was refreshing.

Ms. Phillips has an excellent writing style that is easy to read and a story that is easy to follow. Kiss Me If You Can flows at a steady pace without leaving out pivotal plot building information. The book is lengthy but the character development, including the secondary characters, is necessary and not just page filler.

Ms. Phillips also does something towards the end of the book that I always like to see in a good read, she leaves a strategically placed opening for the next installment. This reviewer, for one, will be looking forward to it.

terrific romantic comedy
By A Customer
In Manhattan Sam "Coop" Cooper always reports the crimes news not stars in the story. That is until he stops for lunch at a dirty dog stand in Midtown while he works a story on apartment burglaries in the Upper West Side. He notices something odd in nearby Vintage Jewelers and knocked out a thief using a hot dog medal lid cover.

Watching the store along with her teenage daughter for her dad who is in Florida, grateful Anna Burnett forces Coop to take a ring as a thank you. TV news catches the aftermath of the heroics and soon the city votes him most eligible male on The Bachelor Blogs. Lexie Davis sees the ring on the news and realizes it matches a necklace that her grandma wears. She meets Coop who thinks she is another bimbo to disturb him, but she wants the ring not him. They soon pair up investigating the history of the matching jewelry starting with a cold case 1950s theft that seems to implicate granny even as they fall in love

This is a terrific romantic comedy starring two likable individuals, the Big Apple and Granny the maybe jewel thief. The story line is fast-paced as Carly Phillips paints a fun tale winking at the enthralled audience with this madcap novel. Fans should set aside time as once you begin this Manhattan maniacal mayhem you will need to finish it in one delightful sitting.

I received this book and started reading right away. The theme of a much-older man with a young woman isn't new, but it's wonderful how Diana Palmer hits the nail right on the head by having the character's overcome their odds to live happily ever after. Two wonderful stories in one book is a fun way to spend a rainy afternoon or a sleepless night.

Deirdre's older sister journalist Megan needs to know whether her belief and that of her family is true that English aristocrat Theo Moreland killed her brother Dennis when they were on a South American adventure together ten years ago. She is also interested to learn whether Theo's expedition found the treasure they sought in the jungle and if yes what happened to the booty. Her sibling's dream is the impetus to act.

Used to going undercover, Megan knows she needs to infiltrate Theo's home, Broughton House. She succeeds by obtaining a position as governess to Theo's younger twin siblings. She tries to tamper down his allure for her that feels so good yet makes her also believe she is behaving like a traitor to her late sibling's memory. He also wonders why he keeps finding her in odd places in the house as if she searches for something.

The lead couple is a fabulous pairing as both suffers guilt over the same person; he from the South American fiasco and she from betraying her brother. An Unexpected Pleasure
By mnix
Megan Mulcahey has arrived in London from America to find out more about Theo Moreland, the Marquess of Raine¾the man responsible for her brother's death ten years before. Deciding that the only way to get the information she wants is to get inside Theo's home, so she decides to pose a governess for Theo's young twin brothers.

Theo and Megan are attracted to each other. Megan is appalled with her desire for the man who killed her brother. Theo believes that Megan is a thief so he refuses to give in to his desire for her as well. When truths are revealed, Theo and Megan may have to work together to solve the growing mystery around them.

In An Unexpected Pleasure, Megan's constant fear of discovery, the mystery of who the murderer was and the intense attraction between Theo and Megan are captivating in the first part of the story. Unfortunately I was disappointed by the unexpected twist at the end. It took the story on a totally different angle, one that I found a little far-fetched and not able to flow with the rest of the storyline.

A little paranormal, a little mystery, a little romance
By S. Reader
Pleasing, but not worth hardcover prices. The strong paranormal elements were interesting, but sometimes veered into "too convenient." Theo is a thoroughly pleasant man, but not a memorable hero. Megan is a strong, smart woman, but only slightly more memorable. Her sister is actually a more memorable character. The murder mystery takes precedence over the romance.

Pleasant, but I wish I'd gotten it from the libary or waited for the paperback. The tone and content of this review mirror my enthusiasm for the book -- nothing to get worked up over.

The roses were glorious.

Heavy-petaled, crimson peach and palest blush-pink, they glowed through the florist's window. Even through the glass Gray Mackenzie could almost smell their lush perfume.

Around her the honking horns and squealing brakes of Oxford Street faded away to nothing. As if in a dream, she watched herself turn and push open the door to the neat little florist shop.

She would buy a dozen of them.

For herself. Just because she wanted to.

It was a gesture totally unlike her, of course. Lingering jet lag, perhaps?

Gray worried her lower lip. She'd arrived only last night after a hellish flight from Philadelphia, and this morning her pale cheeks showed the strain.

"Yes, miss. 'Ow can I 'elp you?" The proprietor was short, red-cheeked and impatient to get on with his work, though he was trying hard not to show it.

Gray pointed. "Those roses in the window. They're—magnificent. No, not the modern hybrids. There, to the right—the old ones. The centifolia roses with the densely packed petals. 'Lisette,' aren't they?" She delighted in the cluster of rich fuchsia blooms tucked in an elegant crystal vase.

There was something sad about her, the bald-headed proprietor thought. Not like the usual Yanks who came in here, flashing their plastic, talking fast and loud. Only hybrids would do for their sort.

But this one was different. Careful and slow in her speech, she was. And she was a rare and proper beauty, what with that auburn hair spilling over her shoulders and skin that seemed almost too translucent to be real.

And those eyes! Purest sea-blue, they were. They put him in mind of a tropical beach at dawn.

The florist frowned, wondering why such a beauty went about dressed in a dark skirt and a nondescript gray jacket. Then he sniffed. None of his business, after all.

But the flowers were.

He nodded, approving her choice. "Quite right, miss. 'Petite Lisette.'

'Normandica' over 'ere. I've a few 'Fantin Latour,' as well. You know something of roses?"

"Not a great deal. It's just…a hobby." Gray knew the blooms must be terribly expensive. "I think—yes, I'll take them. All of them."

The florist's estimation of her soared several notches. She had good taste, this red-maned Yank. But perhaps she didn't understand exactly what she was looking at. "That will be ten pounds each," he murmured discreetly, just in case she wanted to back out.

Gray's eyes flickered. The figure was extortionate!

She did a quick calculation, counting nearly two dozen cut stems. In one sweep she saw most of her cash going.

But those roses would be worth every penny. Every shilling, she corrected herself, savoring the rich-veined damask of the petals, drinking in their heady scent. "I'll take them all," she said decisively.

Yes, it was time she put the past where it belonged and treated herself to something special.

The florist gave her an approving smile. "Very good, miss. I'll just fetch some paper to tie them up." A moment later, he disappeared into a curtained alcove.

Behind Gray the front door opened with the tinkle of a bell. Chill air swirled through the little shop. Crimson petals dipped in the swift currents and Gray brushed a curl from her cheek.

Behind her came the creak of a floorboard, and then the rasp of a dry voice.

A familiar voice, even after five years.

A voice straight out of her nightmares. "Lovely, aren't they?"

She spun about, her heart pounding. Dear God, don't let it be him. Anyone but him!

But the man in the shadows by the door was broad-shouldered, his skin bronzed from long hours in the sun. Bleached nearly white, his long hair feathered low over his eyes.

Brown eyes, not green.

Not like her ex-husband's at all.

Gray squinted into the shadows. Appearances could be changed, after all. She of all people knew that.

The low, dry voice continued. "Such a pity that they die so soon after they're cut." The man's brow rose when Gray did not answer. A smile drifted over his lips. "Sadly, that is often the way with things of beauty. They never last, you know."

Suddenly all the old panic arose. Gray felt her hands begin to quiver. The cold eyes narrowed, studying her, frankly curious now.

"Ex-excuse me. I—I must go." She spun about and stumbled to the door, fear tightening her throat.

Behind her the curtain swished open. "'Ere, miss, come back! You've forgotten your roses!" But Gray was too busy stumbling through the impersonal crowds of Oxford Street to hear.

"JUST OVER THE HILL, it is. Take the first roundabout and then watch for the second turning. That road will take you direct to Draycott Abbey, miss."

Gray smiled her thanks to the healthy, red-faced village boy and put her rented Mini into gear, trying to forget the curiosity that had gleamed in the boy's eyes as she had asked directions to the abbey.

When are you going to stop being so jumpy? she asked herself angrily. It's been five years, after all. Why can't you just let it go?

But Gray knew why.

Because her ex-husband was free again. Because all the high-tech equipment in the world hadn't kept him behind bars.

Away from her.

And now it was just a matter of time until he tracked her down, just as he'd sworn to do.

Her fingers clenched against the steering wheel as she fought down dark memories. Memories of what he'd threatened to do if she revealed any part of the dirty little arrangements he excelled at.

But Gray had revealed what she'd heard. Every detail, every damning fact she had spilled to a packed courtroom and an army of eager reporters.

And the last thing Matt had screamed before he was jostled out of the courtroom was that he'd find her somehow. And when he did, he'd make her pay.

Biting down a jerky breath, Gray sailed through the roundabout and eased the gearshift to low. She tried to tell herself she was making too much of the situation. Matt had escaped, yes, but the security officers in Washington had assured Gray it would be just a matter of days until he was back behind bars.

Meanwhile, they had told her, a visit to England—especially to this quiet little backwater of Sussex—would be an excellent idea.

As Gray drove, she went over the conversation, looking for details she might have missed then. But no, the officer—Harrington, wasn't it?—had been calm, professional and totally unalarming.

There was absolutely nothing to worry about, he'd promised her. Not with all the levels of protection and security that had surrounded her case.

Yes, she was to go off to Sussex and work. Leave the heavy stuff to them, he'd ordered briskly.

The man was a professional. Of course he was right, Gray told herself as forested estates rushed past in a blur of green. She had to forget all this brouhaha about her ex-husband and concentrate on her work.

Especially now, when she had the assignment of a lifetime before her.

At that moment, a second lane came into view. Above the trees Gray caught a quick glimpse of weathered towers and stark stone walls.

Her heart began to pound.

How well she remembered her friend Kacey's letters describing the great moat-encircled structure with its picturesque stone gatehouse and climbing roses. Blond-haired Kacey, the new bride of the Twelfth Viscount Draycott, had been an un-shakable friend to Gray at a time when she had desperately needed one.

And Gray was determined to do her best work for Kacey now.

She shoved the gearshift into Second and sent gravel flying up, savoring the feel of the Mini as it hummed down the narrow drive.

As she passed beneath a line of overhanging oaks, the years seemed to slip away. Suddenly she was young again, with all things possible.

Without warning a speckled brown deer darted across the road. She slammed her foot onto the brake and wrenched the wheel violently, barely managing to avoid the animal.

Gray's breath hissed free. Her fingers gripped the wheel. Abruptly, she remembered another time she'd driven down a quiet country lane, remembered how much she'd been enjoying the feel of speed and control when a dog had shot out onto the road.

Matt had cursed and wrenched the wheel away from her. That night, they'd had their first disagreement. Their first full-blown quarrel. Their first—

White-faced, Gray clutched the wheel, struggling with fear and raw despair. Down, down, she pushed them, back into the dark cubicle she reserved for her past. For anything to do with the other woman she'd been before her name had been changed, and her features altered.

Before she'd become Gray Mackenzie.

Put everything to do with Matt out of your mind, the counselors had ordered. You're Gray Mackenzie now. Forget that Moira Jamieson ever existed.

With a ragged breath, Gray sat back.

She ought to be happy, after all. She was making a name for herself at last. Her work was found in architecture quarterlies and trade publications on three continents. She was almost established enough to pick and choose her assignments.

She was a success, by anyone's standards.

But inside, Gray knew differently. Inside she was still shy, gawky Moira Jamieson, an uncertain little nobody from a backwater town in central Maine.

Matt had known that, too. In fact, he'd never let her forget it.

Out of the corner of her eye Gray saw a dark shape separate from the thick woods.

Her heart lurched as a tall figure emerged from the dark tree line. Gray stiffened, half-expecting to see her ex-husband's sullen face swim into view before her.

But it didn't, of course. Matt would never find her here, not on this quiet estate tucked away in the middle of the English countryside. With any luck he might even be back behind bars already.

Keeping that thought firmly in mind, Gray turned to study the man walking toward the car. The moment she did, she regretted it.

Heat poured into her cheeks; her breath caught in her throat. He was nothing at all like her former husband. Hard, keen eyes the color of wintry seas stared back at her from a rough, weather-hardened face. His nose was high and his lips were full. Dark and thick, his hair brushed the top of his broad shou...

Nice set
By Jody Allen
It is great to see the publisher resurrect these wonderful backlist titles from Ms Skye, but where are the new stories in this series? Seems to this reader there were at least two sisters/ cousins who should have had their own stories, but Ms Skye seemed to bale on the Draycott Abbey series and went the route of many romance authors... romantic suspense and Navy SEALs. Here's hoping this new edition of wonderful past suspenseful stories set Draycott Abbey will resurrect her interest and that of the publishers to return to NEW stories set here.

I LOVED this book!

I love the Draycott Abbey series. Bringing the Scottish Highlands to life for me with the description of the land and the castles. The characters are well written and compelling. If you haven't read any of this series this as good a place as any to start.

It's very hard to get these out of print novels and I was very pleased when i could get both of them in one volume. I enjoy Ms Skye's style very much, and never more so when she is in the Draycott Abbey mode.

Instinct told Marnie Lange that it was wrong, but she'd long ago learned not to blindly trust her instincts. For that very reason she'd surrounded herself with the best, the brightest, the most capable vice presidents, directors and miscellaneous other personnel to manage those ventures in which she'd invested. Now her staff was telling her something, and though she disagreed, she had to listen.

"It's a spectacular idea, Marni," Edgar Welles was saying, sitting forward with his arms on the leather conference table and his fingers interlaced. His bald head gleamed under the Tiffany lamps. "There's no doubt about it. The exposure will be marvelous."

"As vice president of public relations, you'd be expected to say that," Marni returned dryly.

"But I agree," chimed in Anne Underwood, "and I'm the editor in chief of this new baby. I think you'd be perfect for the premier cover of Class. You've got the looks and the status. If we're aiming at the successful woman over thirty, you epitomize her."

"I'm barely thirty-one, and I'm not a model," Marni argued.

Cynthia Cummings, Anne's art director, joined the fray. "You may not be a model, but you do have the looks."

"I'm too short. I'm only five-five."

"And this will be a waist-up shot, so your height is irrelevant," Cynthia went on, undaunted. "You've got classic features, a flawless complexion, thick auburn hair. You're a natural for something like this. We wouldn't be suggesting you do it if that weren't true."

Anne shifted in her seat to more fully face Marni, who had opted to sit among her staff rather than in the high-backed chair at the head of the long table. "Cynthia's right. We have pretty high stakes in this, too. You may be putting up the money, but those of us at the magazine have our reputations on the line. We've already poured thousands of hours into the conception and realization of Class. Do you think we'd risk everything with a cover we didn't think was absolutely outstanding?"

"I'm sure you wouldn't," Marni answered quietly, then looked at Edgar. "But won't it be awfully…presumptuous…my appearing in vivid color on every newsstand in the country?"

Edgar smiled affectionately. He'd been working with Marni since she'd taken over the presidency of the Lange Corporation three years before. Personally, he'd been glad when her father had stepped down, retaining the more titular position of chairman of the board. Marni was easier to work with any day. "You've always worked hard and avoided the limelight. It's about time you sampled it."

"I don't like the limelight, Edgar. You know that."

"I know you prefer being in the background, yes. But this is something else, something new. Lange may not be a novice at publishing, but we've never dealt with fashion before. Class is an adventure for the publications division. It's an adventure for all of us. You want it to be a success, don't you?" It was a rhetorical question, needing no answer. "It's not as though you're going to give speech after speech in front of crowds of stockholders or face the harsh floodlights of the media."

"I'd almost prefer that. This seems somehow arrogant."

"You have a right to arrogance," broke in Steve O'Brien. Steve headed the publications division of the corporation, and he'd been a staunch supporter both of Marni and of Class from the start. "In three years you've nearly doubled our annual profit margin. Three years. It's remarkable."

Marni shrugged. She couldn't dispute the figures, yet she was modest about flaunting them. "It's really been more than three years, Steve. I've been working under Dad since I graduated from business school. That adds another four years to the total. He gave me a pretty free hand to do what I wanted."

"Doesn't matter," Steve said with a dismissive wave of his hand. "Three, five, seven years—you've done wonders. You've got every right to have your picture on the cover of Class."

"One session in a photographer's studio," Edgar coaxed before Marni could argue further. "That's all we ask. One session. Simple and painless."

She grimaced. "Painless? I hate being photographed."

"But you're photogenic," came the argument from Dan Sobel, Class's creative director. He was a good-looking man, no doubt photogenic himself, Marni mused, though she felt no more physical attraction for him than she did for either Edgar or Steve. "You've got so much more going for you than some of the people who've been on magazine covers. Hell, look what Scavullo did with Martha Mitchell!"

Marni rolled her eyes. "Thanks."

"You know what I mean. And don't tell me she had any more right to be on a cover than you do."

Marni couldn't answer that one. "Okay," she said, waving her hand. "Aside from my other arguments, we're not talking Scavullo or Avedon here. We're talking Webster." She eyed Anne. "You're still convinced he's the right one?"

"Absolutely," Anne answered with a determined nod.

"I've shown you his covers. We've pored over them ourselves—" her gaze swept momentarily toward Cynthia and Dan "—and compared them to other cover work. As far as I'm concerned, even if Scavullo or Avedon had been available I'd have picked Webster. He brings a freshness, a vitality to his covers. This is a man who loves women, loves working with them, loves making them look great. He has a definite way with models, and with his camera."

Marni's "Hmmph" went unnoticed as Dan spoke up in support of Anne's claim.

"We're lucky to get him, Marni. He hasn't been willing to work on a regular basis for one magazine before."

"Then why is he now?"

"Because he likes the concept of the magazine, for one thing. He's forty himself. He can identify with it."

"Just because a man reaches the age of forty doesn't mean that he tires of nubile young girls," Marni pointed out. "We all have friends whose husbands grab for their Vogues and Bazaars as soon as they arrive."

Dan agreed. "Yes, and I'm not saying that Webster's given up on nineteen-year-old models. But I think he understands the need for a publication like ours. From what he said, he often deals with celebrities who are totally insecure about the issue of age. They want him to make them look twenty-one. He wants to make them look damned good at whatever age they are. He claims that some of the most beautiful women he's photographed in the last few years have been in their mid-forties."

"Wonderful man," Anne said, beaming brightly.

Marni sent an amused smile in her direction. Anne was in her mid-forties and extremely attractive.

Dan continued. "I think there's more, though, at least as to why Webster is willing to work with us. When a man reaches the age of forty, he tends to take stock of his life and think about where's he's going. Brian Webster has been phenomenally successful in the past ten years, but he's done it the hard way. He didn't have a mentor, so to speak, or a sponsor. He didn't have an 'in' at any one magazine or another. He's built his reputation purely on merit, by showing his stuff and relying on its quality to draw in work. And it has. He calls his own shots, and even aside from his fashion work gets more than enough commissions for portraits of celebrities to keep him busy. But he may just be ready to consolidate his interests. Theoretically, through Class, his name could become as much a household word as Scavullo or Avedon. If we're successful, and he's successful, he could work less and do better financially than before. Besides, his first book of photographs is due out next summer. The work for it is done and that particular pressure's off. I think we lucked out and hit him at exactly the right time."

"And he's agreed to stick with us for a while?" Marni asked, then glanced from one face to another. "It was the general consensus that we have a consistent look from one issue to the next."

"We're preparing a contract," Steve put in. "Twelve issues, with options to expand on that. He says he'll sign."

Marni pressed her lips together and nodded. Her argument wasn't really with the choice of Webster as a photographer; it was with the choice of that first cover face. "Okay. So Webster's our man." Her eyes narrowed as she looked around the group again. "And since I have faith in you all and trust that you're a little more objective on the matter of this cover than I am, it looks like I'll be your guinea pig. What's the schedule?" She gave a crooked grin. "Do I have time for plastic surgery first? I could take off five pounds while I'm recuperating."

"Don't you dare!" Anne chided. "On either score." She sat back. "Once Webster's signed the contract, we'll set up an appointment. It should be within the next two weeks."

Marni took in a loud breath and studied the ceiling. "Take your time. Please."

It was actually closer to three weeks before the photographer's contract had been signed and delivered and Marni was due to be photographed. She wasn't looking forward to it. That same tiny voice in the back of her mind kept screaming in protest, but the wheels were in motion. And she did trust that Edgar, Anne and company knew what they were doing.

That didn't keep her from breaking two fingernails within days of the session, or feeling that her almost shoulder-length hair had been cut a fraction of an inch too short, or watching in dire frustration while a tiny pimple worked its way to the surface of her "flawless" skin at one temple.

Mercifully, she didn't have to worry about what to wear. Marjorie Semple, the fashion director for Class, was taking care of that. All Marni had to do was to show up bright and early on the prescribed morning and put herself into the hands of the hairstylist, the makeup artist, the dresser, numerous other assistants and, of course, Brian Webster. Unfortunately, Edgar, Steve, Anne, Dan, Cynthia, Marjorie and a handful of others from the magazine were also planning to attend the session.

"Do you all have to be there?" Marni asked nervously when she spoke with Anne the day before the scheduled shoot.

"Most of us do. At least the first time. Webster knows what kind of feeling we want in this picture, but I think our presence will be a reminder to him of the investment we have in this."

"He's a professional. He knows what he's being paid for. I thought you had faith in him."

"I do," Anne responded with confidence. "Maybe what I'm trying to say is that it's good PR for us to be there."

"It may be good PR, but it's not doing anything for my peace of mind. It'll be bad enough with all of Webster's people there. With all of you there, I'll feel like I'm a public spectacle. My God," she muttered under her breath, "I don't know how I let myself be talked into this."

"You let yourself be talked into it because you know it's going to be a smashing success. The session itself will be a piece of cake after all the agonizing you've done about it. You've been photographed before, Marni. I've seen those shots. They were marvelous."

"A standard black-and-white publicity photo is one thing. This is different."

"It's easier. All you have to do is be there. Everything else will be taken care of."

They'd been through this all before, and Marni had too many other things that needed her attention to rehash old arguments. "Okay, Anne. But please. Keep the Class staff presence at a minimum. Edgar was going to take me to the studio, but I think I'll tell him to stay here. Steve can take me—Class is his special project. The last thing I need is a corporative audience."

As it happened, Steve couldn't take her, since he was flying in from meetings in Atlanta and would have to join the session when it was already underway. So Edgar swung by in the company limousine and picked her up at her Fifth Avenue co-op that Tuesday morning. She was wearing a silk blouse of a pale lavender that coordinated with the deeper lavender shade of her pencil-slim wool skirt and its matching long, oversized jacket. Over the lot she wore a chic wool topcoat that reached mid-calf and was suitably protective against the cold February air.

In a moment's impulsiveness, she'd considered showing up at the session in jeans, a sweatshirt and sneakers, with her hair unwashed and her face perfectly naked. After all, she'd never been "made over" before. But she hadn't been able to do it. For one thing, she had every intention of going to the office directly from the shoot, hence her choice of clothes. For another, she believed she had an image to uphold. Wearing jeans and a sweatshirt, as she so often did at home alone on weekends, she looked young and vulnerable. But she was thirty-one and the president of her family's corporation. Confidence had to radiate from her, as well as sophistication and maturity. True, Webster's hairstylist would probably rewash her hair and then do his own thing with it. The makeup artist would remove even those faint traces of makeup she'd applied that morning. But at least she'd walk into the studio and meet those artists for the first time looking like the successful, over-thirty businesswoman she was supposed to be.

The crosstown traffic was heavy, and the drive to the studio took longer than she'd expected. Edgar, God bless him, had his briefcase open and was reviewing spread sheets aloud. Not that it was necessary. She'd already been over the figures in question, and even if she hadn't, she was a staunch believer in the delegation of authority, as Edgar well knew. But she sensed he was trying to get her mind off the upcoming session, and though his ploy did little to salve her unease, she was grateful for the effort.

The limousine pulled to the curb outside a large, seemingly abandoned warehouse by the river on the west side of Manhattan. Dubious, Marni studied the building through the darkened window of the car.

"This is it," Edgar said. He tucked his papers inside his briefcase, then snapped it shut. "It doesn't look like much, but Brian Webster's been producing great things inside it for years." He climbed from the limousine, then put out a hand to help her.

Moments later they were walking past piles of packing crates toward a large freight elevator, which carried them up. Marni didn't waste time wondering what was on the second, third and fourth f loors. She was too busy trying to imagine the scene on the fifth, which, according to the button Edgar had pressed, was where they were headed.

The door slid open. A brightly lit reception area spread before them, its white walls decorated with a modest, if well-chosen, sampling of the photographer's work. The receptionist, an exquisite young woman with raven-black hair, amber eyes and a surprisingly shy smile, immediately came forward from behind her desk and extended her hand.

"Ms. Lange? I'm Angie. I hope you found us all right."

This good girl's going bad….

Merry Kade has always been the good girl. The best friend. The one who patiently waits for the guy to notice her. Well, no more. Merry has just scored her dream job, and it's time for her life to change. As the new curator of a museum in Wyoming, she'll supervise a lot of restoration work. Luckily she's found the perfect contractor for the job.

Shane Harcourt can't believe that someone wants to turn a beat-up ghost town into a museum attraction. After all, the last thing he needs is the site of his dream ranch turning into a tourist trap. He'll work on the project, if only to hasten its failure…until the beautiful, quirky woman in charge starts to change his mind.

For the first time ever, Merry has a gorgeous stud hot on her heels. But can she trust this strong, silent man, even if he is a force of nature in bed? When Shane's ulterior motives come out, he'll need to prove to Merry that a love like theirs may be too hot to handle, but it's impossible to resist.

From Booklist
Merry Kade, best friend of Grace Barrett in Dahl’s Close Enough to Touch (2012), has landed a job as curator of Providence, a ghost town outside Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Since Merry loves history, she’s ecstatic to be able to immerse herself in the restoration of the town while living with Grace in a building nicknamed the Stud Farm because of all the gorgeous men who live there. Merry’s only concern is that her job hinges on a lawsuit contesting the will of the ghost town’s donor, but that concern is overshadowed by meeting hunky Shane, the quintessential love-’em-and-leave-’em type. Since Merry doesn’t want a serious relationship and Shane is a carpenter, they seem to have a match made in heaven. She’s enjoying regular sex, and he is helping shore up the town. But what starts out as straightforward turns messy when sex turns to love and Shane’s hidden agenda is exposed. Dahl adds her signature hot sex scenes and quirky characters to this lively mix of romance in the high country. --Pat Henshaw

Hot enough!
By Jonetta (Ejaygirl)
Merry Kade has finally nabbed a job that has promise of a future, something she needs to prove to herself and her family. It also lands her in the same town again as her best friend, Grace. She's the new curator of a ghost town, Providence, that she will need to develop into a museum of sorts. When the board of the Trust that's funding the project drags their feet in getting started, Merry hires Shane Harcourt, a carpenter and neighbor in her apartment building, to start some of the work so she can give them a vision of what's possible. Shane is also the best friend of Grace's boyfriend and she's not crazy about him getting romantically involved with Merry. He's not the kind of guy for commitment (more than one date) and Merry's sweet, trusting and inexperienced.

Merry really is sweet, always looking at the bright side of everything and has a ready smile. There's a part of you that thinks initially that she's going to drive you nuts with her optimism but she's not as naïve as she appears. She's had a tough life and chooses to live in possibility. When Shane gets involved with her, I cringed because he was hiding a major secret that I knew would hurt and maybe damage her permanently. But, their "relationship" was lots of fun as he was drawn to this woman who was a completely different experience, one that pretty much brought him to his knees. She was looking for an extraordinary sexual experience and Shane delivered. He was just looking for friendship and she delivered that and then some to this jaded man.

When the time of reckoning came, as I knew it would, it was hard for me to hold back the tears. It was as painful as I thought it would be but Merry surprised me. She had a lot more grit and spine than I gave her credit for. And Shane found himself more invested in their relationship than she was. Regaining her trust and friendship became paramount for him.

I really like this series as the characters aren't traditional and aren't weighed down too heavily with a lot of baggage but they have some. They are free spirited and the town of Jackson Hole, Wyoming adds a whole new flavor. I had serious issues with Grace in the first story and it was nice to see her with some of that edge tempered. This was a meaty story, with a fun, fairly uncomplicated relationship that had some really hot, steamy moments until it became complicated. Their emotional reactions rang so true, all perfectly and naturally fitting to the situation and the characters. There were moments where I laughed, cried, and got angry, which is more than I expected to find here. I highly recommend the series and especially this story.

Very fun
By R. Murphy
This was a really fun book from Victoria Dahl, and I love that she always has such a variety of heroines. This current one, Merry, is so optimistic and bubbly. She is always looking on the sunny side, and even though she has very low self-esteem when it comes to relationships or her own body, it's blended in really nicely and makes her a very rounded character. But halfway through the book, when the hero's underhanded dealings and secret treachery come out, what I loved was that Merry didn't just collapse into a faint, or forgive him right away -- she actually stood up for herself and showed grit and maturity. It was really great. The friendship between Merry and Grace is also really fantastic -- it isn't just an add-on or a garnish, it's something that's truly important to both and there are some great scenes. Also -- HUGE point in its favor -- when the truth comes out about Shane's ulterior motives, Grace does what pretty much *every* best friend in romance fails to do, and gives him exactly what he deserves -- slap across the face! YES!

In terms of the hero, Shane -- I liked him as well. He's dealing with a lot of family and legal issues, which Merry unknowningly stumbles into the middle of. And while his intentions toward her begin as espionage, they very quickly shift into a real affection and interest. This was a great representation of him actually falling in love with her for her traits, and recognizing her as an individual. Very lovely. Shane also did a lot of growing and maturing as a character, particularly in terms of his lost father and obsessed mother, and it was very nice.

And since this is Dahl, the banter is witty and the sex is hot! This was a great book for a lazy afternoon.

We need more heroines like Merry
By Love2Review
After a while, you get tired of reading about perfect heroines who all dress the same and act the same and basically do not look or act like the regular girls that are reading about them. Merry is the real life heroine that other books are missing. She may be taller than average and have a nice body, but she's a free spirit. She doesn't wear makeup and doesn't know how. Her uniform is tees and jeans with sneakers. She doesn't wear heels and she's comfortable enough with herself to show her joy and playfulness and not spend her time trying to be cool. She's thirty and still trying to find her place in the world, but isn't afraid to take the road less traveled in life. She's described as being the plain girl who would not get noticed in a crowd and would not be the lead character in a romance novel, but she is. She's a heroine for the everyday ordinary girl who wants to see their image and likeness in books too. Usually, when authors write about characters like her, they give them "makeovers" so they can fit in to mainstream society and turn from the ugly duckling into a swan. Not here and I loved that. The Merry at the beginning is the Merry at the end and the other characters who don't appreciate her either get out her life or realize that she is gold.

Never agree to a job interview in which the interviewer has seen you naked.

Nevada Hendrix was confident that nugget of advice had been sewn on a pillow somewhere, or made into an inspirational poster. Unfortunately, no one had shared it with her before. Now, facing Tucker Janack for the first time in ten years, she discovered it was very, very true.

She'd had a plan. That's what killed her. She'd polished her resume, practiced her answers to different interview questions, had bought a new blazer and had even paid an extra seventeen-fifty to get some stupid gloss treatment to make her hair look shiny. She who avoided all things girly whenever possible. Done in by a formerly naked guy and gloss treatment.

"Hello, Nevada."

"Tucker."

She was careful to keep her game face in place—whatever that meant. All she knew was that having her mouth drop open and gape in astonishment wasn't going to make her look capable.

"I was expecting your father," she admitted. After all, the call she'd received about the final interview had specifically said she would be speaking with Mr. Janack. Not a name she associated with a guy she'd known back in college.

"I'm running the construction and doing all the senior hiring personally on this project," he said, motioning for her to take a seat, which she did.

They were in a conference room at a hotel in Fool's Gold. Ronan's Lodge, known to locals as Ronan's Folly, was a beautifully constructed building with hand-carved woodwork and elegant furnishings. Things she might have stopped to appreciate under other circumstances. As it was, she couldn't see much past the man who'd taken a seat across the table from hers.

Time had been kind to Tucker. He was still tall—which shouldn't be a huge surprise. So few men shrank these days. His hair was dark, with just enough curl to keep him from looking too pretty. The dark eyes, square jaw and hint of a smile on his kissable mouth were exactly as she remembered.

Um, no, she told herself firmly. Not kissable. Far from kissable. He was her potential boss. Or not, depending on how he remembered the past.

She swore silently and wondered why old man Janack couldn't have kept control of just one more project…but when it came to Tucker, she'd never been able to catch a break.

"It's been a long time," he said, giving her that slow, easy grin of his. The one that had made her feel like the most special girl in the world. That had been a complete lie and had broken her heart to the point that it had almost not healed itself.

She drew in a breath, pushed all memories of a younger Tucker out of her brain and squared her shoulders. "As you can see from my resume, I've been busy. After college I worked in South Carolina for a couple of years, learning all aspects of construction from the ground up, so to speak. we did mostly commercial spaces and, before I left, I was in charge of a five-story building."

It may have sounded small to him, but it was something that made her proud. "We came in early and under budget, with the cleanest inspection record the company had experienced."

He nodded as if he already knew all this. That, if he'd read her resume, he did.

"Why didn't you stay?" he asked. "They can't have wanted to let you go."

"They didn't, but I wanted to come home."

"Roots?"

"Yes." She did her best not to remember that he'd never experienced what it was like to settle in one place. He'd grown up all over the world. After all, Janack Construction was multinational. She remembered Tucker talking about summers in Thailand, winters in Africa.

She sensed the danger of getting personal and reminded herself she really wanted the job.

"Since returning to Fool's Gold, I've handled mainly smaller projects. Some residential. I have experience working with crews of different sizes and understand state and local building codes." She continued talking, giving examples of her various skills.

"The team that will be working here is one of our best," Tucker told her. "They've been together a long time and they don't take well to outsiders."

"Do you mean outsiders or do you mean women?"

Tucker leaned back in his chair and flashed that killer smile again. "Janack Construction is an equal opportunity employer who complies with all state and federal employment guidelines."

"How very politically correct. I'm not afraid of a team of men, if that's what you're getting at. I grew up with three older brothers."

"I remember. How is ethan?"

"Good. Married. Happy. If you're going to be around for a while, you should look him up."

However, if the powers that be actually liked her, then Tucker was only in town to hire and would soon be jetting off to another part of the world.

"I will. I'm going to be here through the initial phase of the construction."

Damn. So much for being liked by a higher power.

"You work for Ethan," Tucker said. "Why do you want to come work for me?"

She didn't. She wanted to work for his father, but that wasn't an option. "I'm looking for a challenge," she said, admitting the truth.

"You've seen the scope of the project?"

She nodded. Janack Construction had bought over a hundred acres north of town. They were building a resort and casino complex on tribal land. The company had leased additional acres to a developer that specialized in outlet malls—a fact that had the female population in the area quivering in anticipation.

"We should talk about it," he said quietly.

Nevada stared at him, wondering why the project could warrant the slightly furrowed brow. And then she knew. The "it" in question wasn't work related.

"No, we shouldn't." She fought against the urge to stand and possibly back up, putting more space between them. "It was a long time ago."

"Nevada," he began in a low voice.

"Don't. It's over and done. It was meaningless."

He raised his eyebrows. "Really?"

Why couldn't he be like every other guy on the planet and want to avoid talking about anything remotely uncomfortable? Did they have to rehash the past?

"Tucker, it was ten years ago. Five difficult, awkward minutes out of my life. Seriously, it doesn't matter."

He shifted in his seat. "Is that how you think of it?"

"That's what happened. You were drunk, I was…" She pressed her lips together. No way was she going to say the words "a virgin" during a job interview. "Let it go."

"It wasn't five minutes. I've never—" "Oh, my God!" Unable to stop herself, she stood. "This is about your ego? You can't handle the fact that our brief sexual encounter a decade ago was a bad memory? Grow up, Tucker. It's not important. I don't think about it. I came here to have a job interview, not…" She stopped herself, but had a feeling it was a little too late. "We were friends then, too. Can't we remember that instead?"

He stood, as well. "You didn't think of us as friends. Not after."

She wasn't a screamer, which was the main reason she didn't shriek at him. Instead she forced herself to sound completely calm and in control. "Did you have any other questions about my work experience?" "No."

"Then it was great to see you again, Tucker. Thank you for your time."

With that, she turned and walked out of the conference room. She kept her head high and her shoulders back. No one looking at her would guess that on the inside she was both humiliated and defeated.

Having to relive that embarrassing night with Tucker was bad enough, but to lose the chance at her dream job was even worse. She'd wanted the opportunity to work with Janack Construction. They were a great company and she would have been able to stretch herself professionally without having to leave Fool's Gold. Life didn't get much better than that.

Instead he was going to dismiss her without considering her qualifications, which was just like a man. Talk about unfair.

She spun on her heel and marched back to the conference room. The door was still open. She saw Tucker slipping a folder into his briefcase.

Her folder, she thought grimly. Sheets of paper representing her hopes and dreams.

"I'm good at what I do. I work hard and I know this town," she told him when he looked up and saw her. "I understand the people and I could have been an asset to you. But that's not going to happen, is it? All because of a meaningless act that took place years ago. So much for integrity."

Tucker watched Nevada turn her back on him for the second time in less than a minute and walk away. The door closed firmly behind her, cutting off his view of her cropped blond hair and stiff back.

"Not a bad exit," Will Falk said, coming through a side door. "When did you two have sex?"

Tucker glared at the other man. "It's none of your business."

"You think I wanted to hear all that? Based on what she said about your performance, you need to do something." Will, a forty-two-year-old friend of the family and Tucker's assistant, grinned. "Five minutes? Pretty humiliating."

Tucker ground his teeth together. "Thanks for the recap."

He wanted to shout that it had to have been longer than five minutes, even though, technically, he couldn't remember much about the evening. As Nevada had pointed out, he'd been drunk. Not to mention out of his mind, lost in a tempest named Caterina Stoicasescu. Unfortunately, Nevada had also been caught up in the hurricane of Cat's life, however briefly.

"You really blew it," Will offered helpfully. "I thought she had potential."

"She does. I'm not done with her."

Will chortled. "Seriously? You think she'll come work for you now?"

"She wants the job."

"No. She wanted it. Past tense being the key here. Now she knows it means working for you. Hell, Tucker, five minutes?"

"Would you let go of that?"

"I guess I'm going to have to. Still, you were a smart kid, not ugly enough to crack a mirror. I figured some woman somewhere would take pity on you and show you the ropes. Guess I was wrong."

Tucker pointed to the door. "Out."

"Or what? Going to pull my hair?"

Will was still snickering when he limped out of the room.

If it had been anyone else making fun of him, Tucker would have been pissed. But Will was practically family. Barely ten years older than Tucker, Will had been working for Janack Construction since he'd left high school, and Tucker had always thought of him as the older brother he'd never had. Will had quickly moved up the ranks, until an accident six years ago had broken both his legs and fractured his back.

The company medical insurance had taken care of the bills, and Tucker's father had kept Will on the payroll. Even after a year of healing, Will hadn't been able to go back to working at a site.

Right about then Tucker had started running projects on his own. He'd offered Will the job as his right-hand man and they'd been working together ever since. They were a good team, which was why Tucker was willing to take so much crap from his friend. All of which was interesting, but didn't solve the Nevada problem.

The casino-resort project was huge. The biggest one he'd ever run. He needed a good team in place and Nevada brought a lot to the table. The fact that he knew her and trusted her made him unwilling to let her simply walk away. But how to convince her to let go of the past and come work for him?

As he followed Will out of the conference room, he realized once again the trouble in his life could be traced back to Caterina Stoicasescu. Cat had always been hell on wheels. Those around her had the choice of ducking out of the way or being run over and left broken and bleeding on the side of the road. He'd been run over plenty of times, until he'd realized he was done being a fool for love. The emotion wasn't worth the trouble. Unfortunately, Cat had left him one more mess to clean up.

Another hit...
By JACK
Lip service is the 2nd in a series about Texas sisters. While I'd agree with other reviewers that Skye, the main character, would not be my favorite female lead in a book, the other characters in the story more than make up for it. One of Susan Mallery's many talents in my opinion, is her ability to write very enjoyable secondary characters. Dana, Joss, and even the chickens add to the fun of this book. In addition to the humor though there is also a lot of emotion and drama brought on by Mitch's injury, Titan family dynamics, and the needs of a little girl. This should be a definite read for any Mallery fan, but read Under Her Skin first! Can't wait for the next one, which will be out soon.

Maybe it's just me...maybe I have read too many bad romance novels lately that I have a difficult time now recognizing a good one? Or maybe I am a little bit over all the contemporary romances revolving around these "cute" towns where life is great, everyone loves everyone, and everyone helps each other, (born and raised in a small town and having relatives in other small towns BTW). Don't get me wrong, there have been some good books out there around small towns, Mallery herself being the author of a couple, and that is not why I didn't like the book more. The writing was fine, descriptions good, but I just couldn't feel the connection between the leads. It could have to do with the fact that you hear over and over again about his obsession with another woman. For goodness sake why would anyone want to attempt to compete with that? In my opinion the romance was contrived and not believable at all. The 2 side stories actually held my interest much more than the leads.

Just a fun read...

My Review:
Susan Mallery consistently writes contemporary romances that I just love to read for an afternoon's escape. Her books are sweet, fun, romantic, witty, and always feature a wonderfully quirky cast of characters. The Fool's Gold series continues to delight my reader's mind. I just really love this series. There is something about continually getting to visit this sweet little town and the wonderful characters that live there, that just makes me happy.

This book is about Nevada, the last of the Hendrix triplets to find love. Her hero is Tucker, although it takes her a while to realize it. Tucker was one of Ethan's (Nevada's brother) friends and when she goes to college where Tucker lives, Ethan tells her to look Tucker up. That results in a friendship between Nevada, Tucker, and Tucker's girlfriend Cat. Tucker doesn't realize that Nevada actually has feelings for him, but Cat does, and in a twisted scheme, Cat "gifts" Nevada with Tucker. This results in the most horribly disappointing five minutes of Nevada's life. She hasn't seen him since until she walks into a job interview for her dream job ten years later. Needless to say, they have some issues that they need to work out.

Such a fun book. I love that the history between Nevada and Tucker is so embarrassingly horrifying for both of them. It makes it a really fun set-up for the book. But beyond that and before the romance truly starts to develop, I like that Tucker & Nevada develop a true friendship and comradery both at work and outside of it. They both have their faults and have both made mistakes in their history, but these are definitely two people that you can like and cheer for as a reader.

There are also some fabulous side stories in this one...the romance between Will & Jo, Nevada's mom & Max (OMG, I don't know if I have ever laughed as hard as I did when Nevada walked in on them), and even the addition of Cat and her mixed up sexuality. It was such a fun book to read. I had quite a few laugh out loud moments and I read this on a day where I was really sick and miserable, so that is saying something.

This has been such a fun series. I have loved getting to know the triplets this summer. I am so glad that we get three more installments of it next summer. Whooohooo!!!
