The small dark room was airless and full of the familiar odors of saddle soap, well-oiled leather, and stale coffee. It began to sway eerily, as if the floorboards were buckling. Becca knew that her knees were beginning to give way, but she couldn't steady herself and she had to clutch the corner of the desk in order to stay on her unsteady feet. Her throat was desert dry, her heart pounding with dread as she stared in horror at the small television set across the room. The delft blue coffee cup slipped from her fingers to splinter into a dozen pieces. A pool of murky brown coffee began to stain the weathered floorboards, but Becca didn't notice.

"No!" she cried aloud, though no one else was in the room. Her free hand flew to the base of her throat. "Dear God, no," she moaned. Tears threatened to pool in her eyes and she leaned more heavily against the desk, brushing against a stack of paperwork which slid noiselessly to the floor. Becca's green eyes never left the black-and-white image on the television but fastened fearfully on the self-assured newscaster who was tonelessly recounting the untimely death of oil baron Jason Chambers.

Flashes of secret memories flitted through Becca's mind as she listened in numbed silence to the even-featured anchor-man. Her oval face paled in fear and apprehension and she felt a very small, very vital part of her past begin to wither and die. As the reporter reconstructed the series of events which had led to the fatal crash, Becca vainly attempted to get a grip on herself. It was impossible. Dry wasted tears, full of the anguish of six lost years, burned at the back of her throat and her breath became as shallow and rapid as her heartbeat. "No!" She groaned desperately. "It can't be!" Her small fist clenched with the turmoil of emotions and thudded hollowly against the top of the desk.

Hurried footsteps pounded on the wooden stairs, but Becca didn't notice. She couldn't take her eyes off the screen. The door to the tiny room was thrust open to bang heavily against the wall, and a man of medium height, his face twisted in concern, rushed into the office.

"What the hell?" he asked as he noticed the defeated slump of Becca's shoulders and the stricken, near-dead look in her round eyes. She didn't move. It was as if she hadn't heard his entrance. "Becca?" he called softly, and frowned with worry when she didn't immediately respond. He took in the scene before him and wondered about the broken cup and the brown coffee which was running over a scattered pile of legal documents on the floor. Still Becca's fearful eyes remained glued to the television set. "Becca," Dean repeated, more sharply.

"What the hell's going on here? I was on my way up here when I heard you scream—"

Becca cut him off by raising her arm and opening her palm to silence him. Taken aback at his sister's strange behavior, Dean turned his attention to the television for the first time since entering the room. The small black-and-white set was tuned into the news and the story which held his sister mutely trans-fixed was about some light plane crash in the Southern Oregon Cascades. No big deal, Dean thought to himself. It happened all the time; a careless pilot got caught in bad weather and went down in the mountains. So what? Dean shifted from one foot to the other and searched Becca's stricken white face, searching for a clue to her odd actions. What was happening here? Becca wasn't one to overreact. If anything, Dean considered his younger sister too even-tempered for her own good. A real cool lady. Becca's poise rarely escaped her, but it sure as hell was gone today.

While still attempting to piece together Becca's strange reaction, Dean leaned over to pick up some of the forgotten legal documents. It was then that the weight of the news story struck him: Only one man could break his sister's cool, self-assured composure, and that man, if given the chance, could cruelly twist Becca's heart to the breaking point. It had happened once before. It could happen again, and this time it would be much worse; this time that man had the power to destroy everything Dean had worked toward for six long years.

Silently Dean's thin lips drew downward and his icy blue eyes slid to the screen to confirm his worst fears. He waited while the sweat collected on his palms. A faded photograph of Jason Chambers was flashed onto the screen and Dean's pulse began to jump. It was true! Jason Chambers, head of one of the largest oil companies in the western United States, was dead. Dean swallowed back the bile collecting in the back of his throat.

The news of Jason Chambers' death didn't fully explain Becca's outburst. Dean wiped his hands on his jeans before straightening and then listened to the conclusion of the report. He hoped that the reporter would answer the one burning question in his mind—perhaps there was still a way out of his own dilemma. He was disappointed; the question remained unanswered. Dean's jaw tightened anxiously. When the news turned to the political scene, Dean turned the set off.

Becca slumped into the worn couch near the desk and tears began to run down her soft cheeks. She wiped them hurriedly aside as the shock of the newscast began to wear off and the reality of the situation took hold of her. Her hand, which had been raised protectively over her breasts, slowly lowered.

"Are you all right?" Dean asked, his voice harsh despite his concern. He poured a fresh cup of coffee and handed her the mug. "I… I think so…" Becca nodded slowly, but she had to catch her trembling lower lip between her teeth. She accepted the warm mug and let its heat radiate some warmth into her hands. Though the temperature in the stifling office had to be well over eighty degrees, Becca felt chilled to the bone.

The silence in the room was awkward. Dean shifted his weight uncomfortably. He was angry, but he didn't really know whom to blame. It was obvious that Becca was caught in the web of memories of her past, memories of Brig Chambers and his tragic horse. Dean's lips pursed into a thin line as he paced restlessly in front of the desk while Becca stared vacantly at the floor. A silent oath aimed at the man who had caused his sister so much pain entered his mind. Brig Chambers could ruin everything! Dean coughed when he leaned against the windowsill and looked across the spreading acres of Starlight Breeding Farm. Brig Chambers, if he was still alive, had the power to take it all away!

Dean asked the one question hanging between his sister and himself. "Was there anyone with Jason Chambers in that plane?"

Becca closed her eyes as if to shield herself from the doubts in her mind. "I don't know," she whispered raggedly.

Dean frowned and rubbed his hands over his bare forearms. He pushed his straw Stetson back on his head, and his reddish eyebrows drew together. His blue eyes seemed almost condemning. "What did the reporter say?"

"Nothing…the accident had only happened a couple of hours ago. No one seemed to be sure exactly what caused the crash…or who was in the plane. The reporter didn't seem to know too much." Becca moved her head slowly from side to side, as if to erase her steadily mounting fear.

"The station didn't know who was in the plane?" Dean was skeptical.

"Not yet," she replied grimly.

Dean ran a hand over his unshaven cheek and pressed on.

"But surely someone at Chambers Oil would know."

Becca sagged even deeper into the cracked leather cushions and toyed with her single, honey-colored braid. It was difficult to keep her mind on her brother's questions when thoughts of Brig continued to assail her. "The reporter said that there was a rumor suggesting that Jason might have had a couple of passengers with him," Becca admitted in a rough whisper. Hadn't Dean heard the story? Why was he pressuring her?

"Who?" Dean demanded. His blue eyes gleamed in interest.

Becca shrugged and fought against the dread which was making her feel cold and strangely alone. "No one seems to know for sure. I told you it's only speculation that anyone is with Jason…no one at Chambers Oil is talking."

"I'll bet not," Dean muttered, unable to hide the edge of sarcasm in his words. His eyes turned frigid.

"Maybe they just don't know."

"Sure, Becca," he mocked. "You of all people know better than that. If Chambers Oil isn't talking, there's a good reason. You can count on it."

"What do you mean?"

Dean looked his sister squarely in the eyes and the bitterness she saw in his cold gaze made her shudder. His scowl deepened. "What I mean is that we, you and I, don't know if Brig Chambers is alive or dead!"

Becca drew in a long, steadying breath as she met Dean's uncompromising stare. Her brother's harsh words had brought her deepest fear out into the open and she had to press her nails into her palms in order to face what might be the cruel truth. He can't be dead, she thought wildly, grasping at any glimmer of hope, but fear crawled steadily through her body, making her blood run cold and wrenching her heart so savagely that it seemed to skip a beat in desperation.

She wouldn't allow the small gleam of hope within her to die. "I think that if Brig had been on the plane, the television station would have known about it."

"How?"

"From the oil company, I guess."

"But they're not talking. Remember?"

"I…just don't think that Brig was on the plane." Why didn't she sound convincing?

"But you're not sure, are you?"

"Oh God, Dean," she whispered into her clasped hands.

"I'm not sure of anything right now!" As quickly as her words came out, she regretted them. "I'm sorry… I didn't mean to snap at you. It's not your fault," she confessed wearily. "It's all so confusing." Silent tears once again ran down the elegant slopes of her cheeks.

"What are we going to do?" Dean asked, not moving from his haphazard position against the windowsill. Anxious lines of worry creased his tanned brow.

"I don't know," Becca admitted as she faced a tragedy she had never before considered. Was it possible? Could Brig really be dead? Her entire body was shaking as she drew her booted feet onto the edge of the couch and tucked her knees under her chin. As her forehead lowered, she closed her eyes to comfort herself. No matter what had happened, she vowed silently to herself that she would find a way to cope with it.

Dean watched his sister until the anger which had been simmering within him began to boil. His fist crashed onto the windowsill in his frustration. "I told you that we should never have gone back to old man Chambers," he rebuked scornfully. "It was a mistake from the beginning to get involved with that family all over again. Look what a mess we're in!"

"Not now, Dean," Becca said wearily. "Let's not argue about this again."

"We have to talk about it, Becca."

"Why? Can't it wait?"

"No, it can't wait, especially now. I told you that going back to Jason Chambers was a mistake, and I was certainly right, wasn't I?"

LISA JACKSON 15 "I had no choice," Becca pointed out. "We had no choice."

"Anything would have been better than this mess you managed to get us into! What the hell are we going to do now?"

Trying futilely to rise above the argument, Becca attempted to pull the pieces of her patience and shattered poise into place. "For God's sake, Dean, Jason Chambers is dead! For all we know, other people might have died in that plane and all you can think about is the fact that we owe Jason Chambers some money."

"Some money?" Dean echoed with a brittle laugh. "I wouldn't call fifty thousand dollars 'some money.'"

Becca could feel herself trembling in suppressed fury. "The man is dead, Dean. I don't understand what you're worried about—"

"Well, then, I'll enlighten you, dear sister. If Jason Chambers is dead, we're in one helluva mess. I don't pretend to know much about estates and wills or anything that happens when a guy as rich as Jason Chambers kicks the bucket, but any idiot can figure out that all of his assets and liabilities will become part of his estate. You and I and the rest of Starlight Breeding Farm are part of those liabilities." Dean took off his hat and raked his fingers through the sweaty strands of his strawberry-blond hair. "There's only one man who is going to benefit by Jason Chambers' death: his only son, Brig. That is, if the bastard is still alive."

"Dean, don't…" Becca began. She was visibly trembling when she rose from the couch, but in her anger some of the color had returned to her face and a spark of life lightened her pale green eyes.

"Don't you dare come to the aid of Brig Chambers," Dean warned. "Any praises you might sing in his behalf would sound a little hollow, wouldn't you say?"

"Oh, Dean…all of that—"

"That what? Scandal?" Dean suggested ruthlessly.

"I don't want to talk about it."

"Why not? Does the truth hurt too much? Don't you remember what happened at Sequoia Park?"

"Stop it!" Becca shouted irritably. In a more controlled voice, she continued. "That was a long time ago."

"Give me a break, will ya, Becca? Brig Chambers nearly destroyed your reputation as a horse breeder, didn't he? And that doesn't begin to touch what he did to you personally. Even if your memory conveniently fails you, I've still got mine." Dean wiped a dusty layer of sweat from his brow with the back of his hand before striding to the small refrigerator and withdrawing a cold can of beer. He dropped into a chair, popped the tab of the can, and let the spray of cool white foam cascade down the frosty aluminum. After taking a lengthy swallow, he settled back into the chair and cradled the beer in his hands. His cold eyes impaled his sister, but he managed to control his temper. Calmly, he inquired, "You're still carrying a torch for that bastard, aren't you?"

From Publishers Weekly
It's The Six Million Dollar Man meets The Love Boat in this fifth addition to Skye's energetic Code Name series (following Code Name: Blondie). Fresh from a northern Afghanistan war zone and worse for the wear, microchip-enhanced navy SEAL Trace O'Halloran has a new assignment guarding valuable human tissue samples aboard a luxury cruise ship en route to Mexico. Trace, who'd rather be in a northern Afghanistan war zone, grimaces his way through boarding and the first uncomfortable meal before meeting pastry chef Gina Ryan, a rising industry star who gets her kicks creating and plating a thousand crème brûlées a night. Unfortunately, Ryan's nascent celebrity has netted her an enemy in Blaine Richardson, the Cruella DeVille of beverage service. When a villain from Trace's past resurfaces, things go from bad to deadly. While the romance between Trace and Gina feels inevitable and uninspired, and the plot line barely plausible, it makes a fun, antic read. Series fans will find what they came for, but newcomers will want to save themselves some confusion by starting at the beginning. (July)

From Booklist
Recuperating from a mission that almost cost him his life, Navy SEAL Trace O'Halloran, with his implanted special abilities shut off, is sent on a cruise ship to protect a shipment important to the secret genetic engineering program that has enhanced his natural powers. Gina Ryan, the ship's pastry chef, is no stranger to him, and even though his unit has pledged to forgo personal entanglements, he just can't stay away from her, especially after he discovers she is being sabotaged. One of the myriad appeals of Skye's Code Name series is the seriously hunky Izzy Teague, technowizard extraordinaire, and in this episode, some of his mysterious background is exposed. Cruz, the super villain, is back again and more diabolical than ever. Then there are dogs of the extrasmart variety, and a kitten who plays an important role. Skye is adept at writing an imaginative yet believable romance with endearing characters and an action-packed story. Tixier Herald, Diana

Bring on more SEALS!
By Detra Fitch
Lieutenant Trace O'Halloran is part of the secret elite Foxfire team. He has Foxfire technology chips implanted that allow him to be a little more than simply human. He is excelled at psi sweeps, spreading energy nets and reading detailed changes made by anything alive in the area. But after being seriously wounded during his last mission, his chips were deactivated and would remain dormant until he is once again full healed, mentally and physically. Trace is close to full recovery when he is assigned to act as a back up guard for a special package. The package is to be dropped off in Puerto Vallarta. For the next ten days Trace will be spending time on a deluxe cruise ship, doing anything but relaxing. There is one good thing about the cruise though; the pastry chef he met previously on land happens to be part of the ship's crew. Interesting possibilities there.

Gina Ryan is the head pastry chef for a cruise ship. The good news is that she may be getting a television show about making pastries. The bad news is that Gina is losing her eye sight. Within the next several months, she will become blind. Tobias Hale is the only one who knows about her eyes. Tobias is Chief of Security. Gina has more good news; Carly McKay is on board with her family. (Carly and Ford's tale is in the book titled "Going Overboard".) After ten years, it will be great to see her again. And, you guessed it, Gina has more bad news. Blaine is the head of beverage services and is gunning for Gina out of pure jealousness. All of this is more than enough for any one woman to deal with, but when Trace appears on board, Gina knows things will either get much better or all fall apart.

***** A couple of new characters appear in this SEALs installment. I fully expect to see them receive stories in the future. If not, they may at least serve as major secondary characters in the future. Some main characters from previous books appear, as secondary characters, in this novel as well. For those of us who have read the previous titles, it is great to get a glimpse and see how some past main players are doing. Yet none of this diverts from the serious plot or the romance blossoming between Trace and Gina. All the characters are very well developed and the author gives more of Izzy's background. As usual, Skye adds some startling surprises and a few twists that kept me reading late into the night. Excellent book for when you have long hours to devote toward reading. This is not a book that is easily put down. Fantastic! *****

A Murderous Cruise
By J. Kopala
Gina Ryan is the pastry chef for a cruise line. She's also losing her sight and keeping secrets.

Trace O'Halloran is a Navy SEAL. He is on the cruise ship for some R&R because he died on his last mission. It's taken him several months to get back to semi-normal after all the surgeries and rehabilitation. Oh, and he is on an undercover operation to ensure the delivery of some very important materials.

Mix in an ex-Navy SEAL, his photographer wife and their identical triplet girls. Add an old team-mate and now enemy. Add a vengeful crew member. Shake well and you have a mystery and a romance that will keep you up reading until late at night.

I like Skye's gimmick of bringing in people from previous novels. If you've read the novels, you're happy to meet old friends, if you haven't, it doesn't change your perception of the novel you're reading

Code Name: Bikini

Gina Ryan, cruise ship pastry chef extraordinaire is following her dream. Though she has a secret health issue she has traded in her gun and police badge to create gorgeous desserts aboard a cruise line. She has a fantastic staff and a solid group of friends. Too bad there seems to be a little feud with the plastic woman in charge of beverages. But Gina knows it is nothing she can't handle. What she seems to not be able to handle is the super hot passenger.

Trace is on board the ship as an undercover assignment, not one that this SEAL is used to either. He is supposed to relax, but how can he with the spunky Gina on the same ship? But, when things start to get out of hand not only with his mission and his attraction to Gina will the two be able to get together and defeat the bad guys. More importantly will they figure out how they can continue their relationship?

I found Code Name: Bikini to be an intriguing action packed adventure. I thoroughly loved how Ms. Skye had Gina and Trace play off each other as they continued to be thrown together. I think after you read this story that you will find there was a lot more than baking going on with this pastry chef and SEAL. Not only that but it makes for fun interactions. I found the suspense to be well written and it did take me a while to figure out how it all fit together, which for me is a compliment and keeps me intrigued. I also enjoyed the romance and the well written sexual scenes. I enjoyed Code Name: Bikini and think you will also.

Lonesome Bend, Colorado

Ranching, Brody Creed thought, shifting in the saddle as he surveyed the sprawling range land from a high ridge. It can mend a broken heart, this life, and then shatter it all over again, in a million and one different ways and twice that many pieces.

There were plenty of perils. Cattle starved or froze to death when a hard winter came around, which averaged once a year up there in the high country. Spring calves and colts fell prey to wolves and coyotes and sometimes bears, hungry after hibernating through the coldest months.

It was now May, and all was well, but come summertime, wells might dry up for lack of rain, and turn the grass to tinder, ready to blaze up at the smallest spark. He'd seen wildfires consume hundreds of acres in a matter of hours, herds and houses and barns wiped out.

Year round, good horses went lame and pickup trucks gave up the ghost, and every so often, somebody drowned in the river or one of the lakes.

On the other hand, Brody reflected, the beauty of that land could heal, take a man by surprise, even though he'd called the place home all his life. That day, for instance, the sky was so blue it made Brody's heart ache, and the aspens, cottonwoods and pines lining the landscape were shimmering splashes of green, a thousand hues of it, ranging from silvery to near-indigo. The river wound like a ribbon through the valley, clear as azure glass.

After a few moments, Brody adjusted his hat and sighed before giving the gelding a light nudge with the heels of his boots. The buckskin, long-legged with a black mane and tail, picked his way cautiously down the steep slope that led to the water's edge.

Behind them and a hundred yards farther along the riverbank, in a westerly direction, hammers clacked and power saws screeched, and Brody glanced back, pleased, as always, to see the steel-and-lumber skeletons of his house and barn rising.

Not so long ago, there had been a campground and RV park on the site, owned by Tricia McCall, now his sister-in-law and therefore a Creed. The picnic tables and the concrete fire pits were gone, along with the public showers and electrical hookups for trailers. Only the log building that had once served as the office remained; Brody had been baching in it since last Thanksgiving, when he'd moved out of the main ranch house.

The peace between him and twin brother, Conner, could be a fragile one at times, and they both benefited by a little distance.

Now, ready to get moving, Brody clucked his tongue and gave the gelding, Moonshine, another tap with his heels.

"Come on, now," he told the buckskin, his tone reasonable. "The water's shallow here, and it's real calm. If we're going to be working livestock on both sides of this river, then you've got to learn how to cross it."

Moonshine, recently acquired at an auction in Denver, was young, and Brody hadn't had a chance to train him in the ways of a cow pony.

No time like the present, he figured.

Brody was about to get down out of the saddle and lead the horse into the water, which lapped gently at the stony shore that used to be a swimming beach, back when the River's Bend Campground was a going concern, when Moonshine suddenly decided he was willing to get wet after all.

He plunged into the water, up to his chest, making a mighty splash in the process. Brody, gripping the barrel of that horse hard between his knees, just to stay in the saddle, laughed out loud before giving a whoop of pure delight.

His boots filled, and within moments his jeans were soaked to the tops of his thighs, but he didn't care. Moonshine swam that river like he had Olympic aspirations, his powerful legs pumping, his head high and his ears pricked up.

"Good boy," Brody told the horse, with gruff appreciation. "You're doing just fine."

Reaching the other side, Moonshine bunched his haunches for the effort and bunny-hopped up the steepest part of the bank, water pouring off him in sheets. Once he'd gained level ground, the animal shook himself like a dog and Brody laughed again, for no other reason than that life was good.

He was home.

And, for the most part, he was happy to be there. Drenched, he got down from the saddle to pull off his boots, empty them and yank them back on over his sodden socks. When he got to the main house, he'd swap his wet duds for dry ones from Conner's closet.

Having an identical twin brother had its advantages, and one of them was access to a whole other wardrobe.

There'd been a time when Conner would have groused about Brody's tendency to borrow his stuff, but last New Year's Eve, Brody's "little brother," born a couple of minutes after he was, had taken a wife. Conner was happy with Tricia, and these days it took more than a missing shirt or pair of jeans to get under his hide.

They were on a perpetual honeymoon, Conner and Tricia, and now, with a baby due in three months, they glowed, the both of them, as if they were lit from within.

Brody mounted up again and reined Moonshine toward the home-place, feeling a mixture of things as he considered his twin's good fortune.

Sure, he was glad things were working out so well for Conner, but he was a little envious, too.

Not that he'd have admitted it to anybody.

Tricia was beautiful, smart and funny, and she'd taken to ranch life with surprising ease, for a city girl. Essentially a greenhorn, she'd gone horseback riding almost every day since the wedding, when the weather allowed, anyway—until her pregnancy was confirmed. Then Conner had put a stop to the pursuit.

No more trail rides until after the baby's arrival.

Period, end of discussion.

Brody grinned, recalling how adamant his brother had been. For the most part, the marriage appeared to be an equal partnership, but this time, Conner had laid down the law. And Tricia, normally the independent type, had capitulated.

That was just common sense, to Brody's mind, though a lot of country women continued to ride when they were expecting a baby, herding cattle, rounding up strays, checking fence lines. Conner's strong opposition was a no-brainer—Rachel Creed, Conner and Brody's mother, had continued to enter barrel-racing events long after she learned she was carrying twins. There hadn't been a specific incident, but soon after giving birth to Brody and Conner, Rachel's health had begun to go downhill.

She'd died when her infant sons were less than a month old.

Blue Creed, their father, hadn't lasted much longer. Overwhelmed by the responsibility, he'd brought the babies home to the ranch, right around their first birthday, and handed them over to his brother, Davis, and Davis's wife, Kim. Soon afterward, Blue himself had been thrown from a horse and broken his neck. He'd been in a coma for six weeks, and then died.

Now, crossing the range between the river and the two-story house Conner and Tricia had been sharing since they got hitched, the grass rippling around him like a green sea, Brody did his best to ignore the clammy chill of wet denim clinging to his legs—and the old, deep-seated sorrow rooted in his soul. He did take some consolation from seeing the cattle grazing all around, most of them Herefords, with a few Black Anguses to break the red-brown monotony. Two dozen broncos, specially bred for the rodeo, and six Brahma bulls completed the menagerie.

Clint and Juan and a couple of the other ranch hands wove in and out among the different critters on horseback, mainly keeping the peace. Brody touched his hat-brim to the other men as he passed, and those who were looking his way returned the favor.

By then, Moonshine was restless, trying to work the bit between his teeth, so Brody gave him his head. That cayuse might be skittish when it came to crossing rivers, but he sure did like to run.

Brody bent low over the buckskin's neck, holding his hat in place with one hand and keeping a loose grip on the reins with the other.

And that horse ate up ground like a jet taxiing along a runway before takeoff.

Brody was enjoying the ride so much that the corral fence sprang up in front of them as suddenly as a line of magic beanstalks.

Moonshine soared over that top rail as if he'd sprouted wings, practically stretched out flat, and came in for a magnificent landing about one foot short of the place where Conner stood, looking like he'd had rusty nails for breakfast instead of bacon and eggs.

Brody gazed down into a face so like his own that the sight of it even took him aback sometimes, and he was used to being pretty much an exact duplicate of his brother.

Conner was scowling up at him, through swirls of settling dust, and he looked as though he'd like to grab hold of Brody, haul him off that horse and beat the holy bejesus out of him. So much for personality improvements resulting from wedded bliss!

"Oops," Brody said cheerfully, because he knew that would piss off Conner and he still enjoyed doing that now and again, even though they'd been getting along well for a respectable length of time. "Sorry."

He swung down and faced Conner, who was taut with annoyance, his shoulders squared, his fists clenched and his attitude contentious.

"Damn it, Brody," he growled, "am I having one of my invisible days, or are you going blind? You darn near ran me down, and it'll take me the better part of the morning to get this mare calm enough to work with again!"

Prior to the leap, Brody hadn't noticed his brother or the pinto mare, now nickering and tossing her head over on the far side of the corral, but he didn't think it would be smart to say as much. Instead, he decided to come from a place of helpfulness.

"You starting horses yourself these days, instead of letting one of the wranglers do it?" he asked, bending to pick up the lightweight saddle the mare must have tossed when he and Moonshine came over the fence.

Conner grabbed the saddle and jerked it out of Brody's hands. "Yes," he snapped in response. "You dropped out for a decade, Davis broke both legs the last time he rode a bronc and Clint and Juan are downright creaky at the hinges. Who the hell did you think was starting the horses?"

"Whoa," Brody said, recoiling slightly and still grinning. "What's chewing on you? Did you have a fight with the little woman or something?"

"No!" Conner yelled.

Brody chuckled, adjusted his hat and then turned to get Moonshine by the reins. After the river crossing and the hard run over the range, not to mention that spectacular jump, he figured the horse deserved some stall time, free of the saddle and bridle. "Well, what's the matter, then?" he asked reasonably, starting toward the side door of the barn.

"Nothing," Conner bit out, setting the dusty saddle on the top rail of the fence and turning to the mare.

"Something is," Brody insisted calmly, pausing.

Conner looked at Brody then, through the haze of slowly settling corral dirt, and sighed. "Tricia and I might have had words," he said grudgingly.

"Trouble in the vine-covered cottage?" Brody teased, knowing it couldn't be anything serious. He'd never seen a man and a woman more deeply in love than his brother and Tricia were.

"She says I'm overprotective," Conner said, taking off his hat and swatting his thigh with it before putting it back on.

Brody flashed a grin. Rubbed his beard-stubbled chin with one hand. "You?" he joked. "Overprotective? Just because you'd wrap the lady in foam-rubber padding, if she'd let you, so she wouldn't stub her toe?"

Conner glared, but there was a grin to match Brody's brewing in his blue eyes. He held it off as long as he could, but then it broke through, like sunlight penetrating a cloud-bank.

"Put your horse away," Conner said. "I might as well turn the mare out to graze for the rest of the day, now that you and that gelding scared her out of three years' growth."

Brody led Moonshine into the barn, put him in a stall and gave him a couple of flakes of hay. When he left by the main door, Conner was waiting for him in the yard, throwing a stick for the Lab-retriever mix, Valentino.

In Brody's opinion, that was a prissy-assed name for a ranch dog, but the poor critter had already been saddled with it when Conner and Tricia took up with each other. Conner had tried calling him "Bill" for a while, but the former stray wouldn't answer to that, so Valentino it was.

Brody looked around. There was no sign of Tricia, or the Pathfinder she drove.

"She's gone to town to help Carolyn at the shop," Conner said. He usually had a pretty fair idea what Brody was thinking, and the reverse was also true. "The woman is pregnant out to here." He shaped his hands around an invisible basketball, approximately at belly level. "What would be so wrong with staying home for one day? Taking it easy, putting her feet up for a while?"

Brody chuckled and slapped his brother on the shoulder. "She's running a small-town art gallery, Conner," he said, "not bungee-jumping or riding bulls in a rodeo."

Conner's face tightened momentarily and, once again, Brody knew what was on his twin's mind because they so often thought in tandem.

"There's no connection between our mom's pregnancy and Tricia's," Brody added quietly. "Stop looking for one."

Conner sighed, managed a raw kind of grin. Nodded.

It struck Brody then, though not for the first time, of course, just how vulnerable loving a woman made a man. And after the baby came? It would be way worse.

Brody shivered, momentarily swamped with recollections.

"What happened to your clothes, anyhow?" Conner asked, looking him over. He tended to get around to things in his own good time.

"Moonshine got a little overenthusiastic crossing the river," Brody replied.

Disappointing
By hmc
I've read LLM books for a while now, and I'm sad to say I've noticed a downhill trend. I read Connor's book and thought that it was just okay. This book was just okay as well. There was way too much wordiness (as seen in the previous book). I'm truly hoping that this isn't becoming a habit of the author. There was quite a bit of repetition. Every time Brody or Connor would experience something that brought back memories of losing their parents at such a young age, LLM would repeat the story. Every time. I knew after the first time that the mother died in childbirth and the father fell off a horse. Both were also mentioned in Connor's book, but for those that didn't read that book it still isn't necessary to repeat the same portion of the story so many times. I think that LLM's favorite word must be "proverbial." It's mentioned 6 or 7 times in this book (thankfully I can search for things with my kindle app). Many times the reader will understand the saying. Reiterating "proverbial" is annoying and a waste of word space for more entertaining writing.

Overall, the storyline is typical LLM. I just wish the writing was a little better. Too much wordiness makes it easy to lose interest in the book at times. If this doesn't change, I can see LLM losing some readers.

Another great story in the Creed series
By Tooncesmom
Carolyn Simmons and Brody Creed had a brief, tumultuous relationship until a late night telephone call took him out of her life eight years earlier. Now he's back, but the hurt he caused and her lingering doubts remain. Can these two hurting souls move beyond a dark secret and a bitter past to reach a happy future?

Brody Creed likes life on the move, and for the past eight years he's done just that...on the rodeo circuit. When he finally returns to Lonesome Bend, his attempts at reconciling with his twin brother Connor are rebuffed, but Brody has ties to the land and at last plans to settle down and run his half of the Creed ranch. He buys Tricia McCall's deceased father's run-down RV park and despite his estrangement from Connor, he begins construction on a house and barn on the property.

Family ties run deep, so Brody and Connor, who has now married Tricia McCall, are often dinner guests at their uncle Davis' and Aunt Kim's home, as is Tricia's and Kim's close friend Carolyn. Past hurts make Carolyn wary; she usually tries to escape seeing Brody, but as her biological clock ticks on, she comes to understand the Creed bad boy still has the power to turn her world upside down.

Ms. Miller delves deep into the human psyche to bring a story of love, loss and redemption in the lives of Brody and Carolyn. Filled with doubts about herself stemming from years as a neglected foster child, Carolyn cannot allow herself to trust, and Brody must come to terms with a secret that up until now, he's been unable to discuss. He must set aside his guilt in order to be the man Carolyn needs.

Another great story in the Creed series. Wonderful characters, dynamic dialogue and a setting that will make you want to move to Lonesome Bend. You will love the way these two needy characters dance around the truth, pretending their feelings are not on parade. Their epiphanies make for a thoroughly satisfying read.

Disappointing
By Sarah
I have been a fan of Lael Miller's for a while now, and have seen the quality of her books decline. This last book in the trilogy was clearly hastily written. I thought it really lacked any substance, and the story line is recycled from previous books (could have been Tate, Garrett and Austin or Logan, Dylan and Tyler). There were a few details that obviously weren't edited correctly. In the Hidden Lake scene, Brody is said to have left his cowboy hat on the horse's saddle, then it's said he sets in on his clothes. In the following scene, the story indicates he left it in the truck at the ranch house and never even had it! Come on! The use of the term "copse of trees" or "copse of cottonwood trees" is in EVERY SINGLE book I have read! I like a good romance book, and a good cowboy story, but I might have to start looking elsewhere!

Callie Mitchell straightened her skirt, took a deep breath to calm the butterflies in her stomach and followed the receptionist to Adam Hawke's office on the top floor of a downtown LA office building. The central operations of his company, Hawke's Blooms, took up the entire floor and, as CEO, Adam had a corner office, which had to have killer views.

In hindsight, it had probably been a bad idea to stop on the way for a little Dutch courage—especially because it had been alcohol that had started this whole crazy mess—but she'd needed some help. It wasn't every day a woman had an appointment to see her secret husband.

In fact, she hadn't seen him once in the three months since their wedding day, so this was quite the momentous occasion. They'd met at an industry conference in Las Vegas just over two years ago and spent an amazing night together, then had hooked up again at the following year's conference. Third time had been the charm—this year they'd added vows to their rendezvous.

The receptionist opened the door and waved her through and suddenly Callie was standing in front of him. The man she'd spent the most explosive times of her life with. The rest of the world faded away, leaving only him. The oxygen must have faded away, as well, because suddenly she couldn't get her lungs to work.

The receptionist had slipped out and closed the door behind her, leaving them alone, but Callie couldn't find a word to say. Although Adam wasn't saying anything, either.

He was as perfect as she remembered, which was a surprise—she'd been certain her imagination had embellished things, that no man could be that gorgeous. Yet here was over six feet of proof standing before her. His green eyes were as intense, his frame as broad and powerful as the image she had in her mind's eye. But he was wearing a suit with a crisp white shirt and dark blue tie. Most of her memories were of him stretched across the Vegas hotel sheets wearing nothing but a smile.

He cleared his throat. "You look different as a brunette."

She'd gone back to her natural caramel brown about three weeks ago, but instead of telling him that, she heard herself say, "You look different with clothes on."

His eyes widened, and she covered her mouth. That Dutch courage had been a very bad idea.

Then he laughed, a low rumble that seemed to fill the room. "I'm starting to remember why I married you."

"And what drove you away again," she said and smiled. After a day spent in bed, gradually sobering up, Adam had suggested a divorce. She'd been having so much fun—and was, in all honesty, so dazzled by the Adonis who'd proposed to her—that she would have given their marriage a shot. But she'd had no rational argument for staying together, so she'd agreed.

Still, after three months, neither one of them had started those divorce proceedings. She didn't know Adam's reasons, but there was a small kernel of hope deep in her chest that maybe he wasn't quite ready to cut all ties with her yet.

He indicated two upholstered chairs near the windows, which, sure enough, offered a premium view of Los Angeles below. "Take a seat. Can I get you a drink?"

She knew he probably meant coffee or tea, but still she winced, remembering the gin she'd stupidly had before coming. "No, I'm fine. I won't be here long."

He nodded and took the chair across from her. Then his expression turned serious. "What do you need, Callie?"

For a moment all she could focus on was the sound of her name on his lips. His voice was deep and still sent a warm shiver through her. Three months ago he'd whispered her name in the heat of passion. Had murmured it when she'd kissed the smooth skin of his abdomen. Had shouted it as he'd found his release. More than anything, she wanted to hear him say her name again. Then his question registered, and she straightened her spine.

"Why do you think I need something?"

His forehead creased into a row of frown lines. "I just assumed… " He let the sentence trail off. "After all this time, I figured if you were contacting me, you must—"

"I don't need anything," she said, holding up her hands, palms out. "I'm here as a courtesy, to let you know something."

His jaw hardened. "You're getting married?"

The way his mind worked was intriguing. She remembered that from their short time together—she'd been constantly fascinated by the things he said.

"No, I'm up for a promotion." Her PR firm had finally given her a chance to make partner—something she'd been working toward for years—and she wasn't going to let the opportunity go.

"Congratulations," he said. "So how does this involve me?"

"They've given me an assignment. If I handle this project well, I'll make partner." At twenty-nine, she'd be the youngest partner in the history of the firm.

He raised one eyebrow. "What's the assignment?"

"The Hawke Brothers' Trust." His company's new charity raised money for homeless children; it had already made a splash with various events, including a bachelor auction, and was now ready to move to the next level. Something Callie was looking forward to being a part of.

"Ah," he said, and rubbed the back of his neck. "I didn't realize Jenna had brought in your company."

Adam's future sister-in-law, Princess Jensine of Larsland, had helped to create the charity and was in charge of day-to-day operations. Callie had suspected Adam wasn't aware that her company had become involved. Which was why she was here, warning him, before she started work on the project.

"There was a good chance we'd run in to each other in a meeting or something, and I wanted to give you a heads-up before that happened."

"I appreciate it. So," he said, offering her half a smile, "how have you been?"

Despite being married, they didn't really know each other well enough to catch up. They had no basic information to catch up on. So she said, "Good, and you?"

"Good," he said, nodding.

It was awkward, so she took a breath and refocused. "I was thinking that maybe we should have our stories straight in case anyone puts two and two together."

He rubbed a hand over his chin. "You mean about us being married?"

"Since I'll be working with members of your family, it's a possibility."

"It won't happen. They don't know I—" He swallowed. "They don't know what happened."

"You didn't tell your family that you got married?" She hadn't expected he would brag about a short-lived Vegas wedding, but equally, she hadn't expected that he'd keep it a secret from his two brothers. In the short time they'd spent together, he'd mentioned he was close to his younger brothers.

He shifted in his seat. "Did you tell your friends and family?"

"I didn't tell everyone, but I told my sister." She moistened her lips. "You seriously didn't tell anyone?"

His face was unreadable. "I don't generally telegraph my mistakes to the world."

Asking her for a divorce had pretty much shown he had thought of their wedding as a mistake, but still, there was something in the way he held himself tall in the chair—and in his tone as he said it—that had made her feel small and insignificant. She'd thought of their time together as something wild and crazy, something out of character, where they just went too far. She hadn't thought of herself as someone's mistake. It hurt more than she would have expected.

But now that he'd made his feelings crystal clear, the stupid part of her needed to let go.

She took a breath. "While I'm here, we really should talk about a divorce."

"Already underway," he said without hesitation. "I've filled in the paperwork and was just waiting for my brother's wedding to be over before filing it."

"Oh, right. Good." Everyone knew Adam's younger brother was marrying Princess Jensine of Larsland, so Callie could see that he wouldn't want to draw attention when the media could be hunting for stories.

"I didn't want my alcohol-fueled decision to have ramifications for him."

Flinching, she stood and hitched her bag over her shoulder. "I should go. Let me know when you're ready to file the divorce papers."

"Callie." He reached out to her as he stood, and then let his hand drop. It was the first time his voice had held a note of tenderness since she'd entered his office. He'd been the only man who'd ever affected her with merely his voice, and she wobbled. "I'm sorry," he said. "That was probably harsh. I don't want us to part on bad terms."

"It's fine," she said, summoning a polite smile. "But I've taken up enough of your time. I just wanted to give you some forewarning and I've done that, so I'd better get back to promoting the Hawke Brothers' Trust."

He held her gaze for a heartbeat or two, searching her eyes. Then he nodded and stepped back. "Okay. Let me know if you need anything."

Callie smiled and slipped out the door. Halfway down the corridor, her cell rang, and she paused in the reception room to answer it. A colleague's name flashed on the screen: Terence Gibson. He'd recently been up for the same promotion as Callie and his competitiveness had bordered on excessive. Since she'd been offered this project with the chance to win the promotion if she did well, she knew this wasn't going to be a congratulatory call.

"Hi, Terence," she said.

"I can see why the partners gave you this assignment," he said, not bothering to hide the malice in his voice.

She punched the elevator button. "And why is that?"

"Being married to one of the clients will certainly give you an edge." She froze.

"Oh, you mean they don't know about your marriage to Adam Hawke? Oh, dear. I wonder what upper management will say when they find out. It will hardly make them feel as if they can trust you, and I hear they value open and clear communication in their partners."

The elevator arrived but she ignored it, sagging back against the wall. "How did you…?"

"You really need to work on your poker face, Callie. The expression when they told you it was for the Hawke Brothers' Trust would have told anyone watching closely enough that you had some sort of connection. The question was only about which brother. After a bit of searching I found that you married one of them three months ago. Although I couldn't find a record of a divorce anywhere. I assume that's where you are now? With your husband?"

Her stomach clenched tight. "What do you want, Terence?"

Despite asking the question she had a pretty good idea of what the answer would be.

"Stand back from this assignment and let them hand it to me."

It was what she'd expected him to say, but still, the gall of the man, the entitled arrogance, was staggering. "You know I won't do that. It would be handing you the promotion, as well."

"Then I'll sell the story to the tabloids," he said, his voice almost gleeful. "I'm sure you can imagine what a PR disaster that will create. They'll love an exposé about the future prince's brother having a drunken wedding in a tacky Las Vegas chapel."

"No." It would overshadow her assignment and ruin her chances of the promotion.

"Then step away now and give me a clear shot at the partnership."

So either she stepped back and let Terence have the partnership, or she stayed and he caused a scandal, meaning he'd probably get the partnership instead of her anyway. Neither of those choices was appealing, but she especially didn't like giving in to blackmail. She needed time to think. To find a third option. She had to stall him.

"Give me a few days to think about it. Even if I tell the partners I can't take the assignment I'll need some time to come up with a believable reason."

"You have one day. Twenty-four hours."

The line went dead.

Callie blew out a breath, turned on her heel and headed back to Adam Hawke's office.

Adam stood when Rose, his receptionist, buzzed to tell him Callie Mitchell wanted to see him again. It had barely been five minutes since she'd left. He told Rose to let her through, and then had a look around the room for something Callie had forgotten. He couldn't find anything. But then, he was hardly focused enough to be sure.

Since she'd first made the appointment yesterday, he'd been unsettled. He'd dreamed about her last night, about their time together. About making love to her. Though that wasn't uncommon—he regularly dreamed about making love to her.

Which just showed how bad she was for his equilibrium. Control over himself and his life was important to him, and Callie made him feel off-center—a feeling he disliked intensely.

Then from the moment she'd appeared through his door this morning, he'd barely had two functioning brain cells to rub together. Hell, he hadn't even greeted her, just made some inane comment about her hair. Though her reply had been memorable.

He prayed this would be a short visit so he wouldn't make a fool of himself by blurting out something worse than what she'd said.

After a knock on his door, there she was again, as if conjured from his dreams, her rich, caramel-brown hair hanging sleek around her shoulders, her olive skin smooth. He knew from experience the taste of that skin, and his heart skipped a beat as the memory flooded his senses.

"Did you forget something?" he managed to ask.

She shook her head, her silver-blue, almond-shaped eyes serious. Something had changed.

She tipped up her chin and met his gaze squarely. "We have a problem."

He was careful not to touch her and set off more memories as he moved behind her to shut the door and lead her to one of the chairs they'd occupied only minutes before.

Once they were settled, he said, "Okay, tell me."

"A colleague of mine," she said, her emphasis on the word colleague telling him much, "noticed my surprise when I was given this assignment and started digging. He's found our marriage license and is threatening to tell the tabloids."

Adam swore under his breath. "What does he get out of it?"

"He wants this promotion and he wants me out of the way. He thinks the media coverage of your secret Vegas wedding will overshadow any PR work I do for the trust, and he's probably right. He wants me to refuse the assignment and let him have it."

"Like hell." There wasn't much that Adam hated more than a bully, and he refused to let Callie become the victim of one while he had any power over the situation. "The trust won't work with a man who's blackmailed his way to get the role."

"If I step back and you refuse to work with him, he'll probably still plant the story out of spite. We'd both still lose."

Callie's entire demeanor was professional, but underneath she had to be rattled. Every protective instinct inside him reared up, ready for whatever needed to be done.

"Give me one minute."

He stood, strode over to his desk and pressed the buzzer for his receptionist. "Rose, cancel all my meetings for the rest of the day."

"Certainly. Do you want me to give a reason?"

"Just that something unexpected has come up. Then reschedule them as soon as you can."

"Consider it done."

Not much Heart
By Jenn
So it's not that this is a bad story, it's cute, but it falls into the old belief that all romance is formulamatic and I'm not one who really believes that. Granted you see some of the same basic plot ideas like the fake girlfriend/fiance/spouse turning into a real relationship is often done, but it's one of my favorite story lines because I like to see what each author brings to the table and how they make that idea theirs.

Having read all three of the Hawke brother's stories it's not only that Bailey pulled from the known romance ideas, but it's almost as if she has a book formula of her own. In all three of these books the couple sleeps together, some sort of conflict occurs, the female leaves, the man realizes he's miserable without her and that he loves her, he chases and catches her, they live happily ever after. The entire series follows the exact same plot points with only slight variations on characters and what the actual conflict is. They even all share the scene when the male lead is being miserable of his two brother's showing up to help him figure it out. Every single book.

What makes reading and authors so fascinating to me is reading those books where you can tell the author put their heart and soul into the work, even if they are using a basic idea that's been done before, you can tell they strived hard to make it theirs, to make their characters stand out and their story be memorable, when a book series basically follows a check list in every novel it's very clear that isn't the case. And it's hard to be impressed with a minimal effort book despite how talented a writer the author is.

Bailey is a good writer, she strings words together well and creates many romantic scenes and scenarios. Her male characters say things that many women dream of hearing from a man etc, but without heart and originality in the story it's hard for it to stand out for me from the hundreds of other books I've read and I wouldn't exactly call it memorable.

The book is well written and cute, definitely a fluff read that many readers will enjoy. I can't say that I don't recommend it because like I said it's not a bad book but it's hard to say that I do recommend it when it's missing that spark of originality that makes a book memorable.

Good book
By S. Frank
Good book. For the past three years, Adam and Callie have met during a business conference in Las Vegas. The first two years they enjoyed each others' company and moved on. The most recent conference went a bit differently. Thanks to a bit too much alcohol, Adam and Callie decided to tie the knot at one of Vegas's many chapels. In the cold light of morning, Adam realized that it had been a mistake, and they plan to quietly file for divorce.

Three months later, neither has yet done so, when Callie shows up in Adam's office. She's being offered a promotion at her PR firm, and one of the accounts she'll be working on is that of the Hawke Brothers Trust. She wanted to let him know so that they can quickly deal with their marriage and so it doesn't become an issue with working together. But before they can do so, a jealous coworker of Callie's threatens to take the secret marriage to the tabloids. The only thing they can do is make it look real and take it public themselves. I loved seeing the way that they laid everything out like a PR project, and couldn't wait to see how real life was going to affect it.

To aid in the deception, Callie moves in with Adam, but here is where things start to get a little tricky. They have never been able to deny the attraction between them, and living together without giving in to it is making their public interactions less than convincing. They decide that they can be adult enough to enjoy their time together without becoming "emotionally compromised."

Adam has always felt an incredible amount of responsibility for his family, and been especially protective of his brothers. As a kid, he was closest to his grandfather and saw the fallout when his grandfather fell in love with a woman who didn't feel the same way. He swore he would never allow himself to lose control of himself that way. Even when he helped his brothers win their loves, he didn't allow ideas of love for himself. The only time he let go of control was the night he married Callie, and he's been running from those feelings ever since.

As Adam and Callie are forced to spend time together, they get to know each other in ways they hadn't with their brief hookups. Their connection gets stronger, but neither wants to believe that it is anything more than sex. They start to talk about keeping their affair going even after they divorce, because neither is truly willing to let go of what they have. But when Callie realizes that she has truly fallen in love with Adam, she can't stand the idea of going forward without his returning her love and leaves. Adam has to confront his fears and decide if he's willing to risk it all to get it all. His big moment was a huge step for him and really well done. The ending was sweet and romantic and the perfect wrap up for the series.

I really liked getting to catch up with Liam and Jenna, and Dylan and Faith. It was great to see the way that they all accepted Callie so easily, even knowing the details of the relationship. I loved their parts at the end, especially the way that Liam and Dylan confronted Adam after Callie left. It was so much fun to see them turn the tables on him.

Wilson’s enchanting debut mixes dollops of Jane Austen into a modern fairy tale shaped by the British mania for dogs and dog shows. After losing her teaching job, American Elizabeth Scott is hired by British dog-show enthusiast Sue Barrow to help with her border terrier show dogs. Since Elizabeth hopes her own Cavalier King Charles spaniel will win awards one day, she sees working for Sue as a step forward. In her first show, the feisty Elizabeth verbally spars with judge Donovan Darcy, a Cavalier breeder. Consequently, she’s surprised to find that Donovan lives across the street from Sue in London. Although it is love at first sight for both of them, Donovan must wine and dine Elizabeth, and she must reject him because they come from such different socioeconomic backgrounds. While their relationship is blessed by Donovan’s best friend, Henry, and Elizabeth’s beloved older sister, it is thwarted by Henry’s sister, who is besotted with Donovan, and Donovan’s disapproving aunt. Dog lovers and readers who love Austen pastiches will savor this latest showing of the famous couple. --Pat Henshaw

so much fun
By Ionia Froment
In many ways, this is one of my favourite romances I have read this year. I was actually quite surprised by how much enjoyment I got out of this book. What the characters were based on put aside, I loved the originality of the cast. When you read a lot of romances, they all tend to blend together after a while, so it was nice to see some characters that really made me want to root for their success.

I really loved Elizabeth's character. She was intelligent, emotional and just all around the kind of character that you want to learn more about. I understood why she felt the way she did and respected her for being different than the average female character who meets the rich, handsome bachelor.

Donovan was well written and the dialogue he brought to the story was better than the average romance lead character drama. I laughed out loud in multiple places at his observations of the other characters and the situations he found himself in.

The dog shows were well described and I loved that Elizabeth had such a soft spot in her heart for Bliss and for Sue's companions.

Romance-wise, this story was paced well and the characters didn't fall in love and end up in bed together within the first chapter. The author allowed them time to build a relationship before she embarked on much intimacy and this made me feel closer to them. I liked that we got to know more about them as individuals before they became a single unit. The sex scene itself was also tasteful and more romantic than gross for those of you who don't like really explicit descriptions.

I will say, that as much as it made me giggle at times, if you are English, the MANY references to what English people and English men in general are like will either make you laugh or drive you mad. In some places the cliches were so abundant it nearly reminded me of one of those "what American's think we do" memes you find on the internet.

There is a bit of imagination stretching to get around things like passports, visas and the ability to simply decide to stay in a country other than your own, but the story warranted a bit of belief suspension and that was okay. I thought the characters were worthy of it.

That and the repeated use of the phrase "Storm clouds gathered in his eyes" were the reason I gave this four stars rather than five. Still, this was a really fun way to pass the hours and I got a lot of enjoyment out of it, more so even than I had expected.

If you are a fan of the lighter romance with a good back story and lots of reasons to smile, this book will be just your thing.

Cute Modern Pride and Prejudice Retelling
By Sophia Rose
What can I say? Cute cover, modern-day retelling of Pride & Prejudice, Darcy and Lizzy as show dog aficionados? Cuteness and curiosity won out so I grab this one up looking for a light, entertaining romantic read. And it was that. If Elizabeth was a bit more prejudiced and some of the parallel scenes and dialogue to the original story felt forced, it was not enough to ruin my enjoyment of the story. I would go bail that for someone who hasn't read Pride & Prejudice; some of the dialogue that is nearly a direct quote will read as an oddity in this modern story version because no matter how formal people are; they do not talk that way now. I chuckled each time it happened and enjoyed it in turn because though it was odd I loved seeing those very familiar quotes.

So about the story...
Elizabeth Scott is spending her thirtieth birthday away from home and family celebration to take her beloved dog to her first dog show. She is joined by her sweet older sister, Jenna, who has no interest in dogs, but doesn't want Lizzy to be alone on her birthday. They meet a very nice British couple who are there to show their dogs, but then she bumps into a not so nice Brit, Donovan Darcy, who just so happens to be the guest judge and also one of those rich snobs she hates.

Elizabeth has been put on leave because as a teacher in an exclusive private school for the privileged she dared give the star lacrosse player a failing grade only to have his dad first try to bribe her and then come on to her to change her mind. Not only did the school quietly not back her up because of who holds their purse strings, she was now under investigation for trying to blackmail the dad into the money. Yeah, rich people aren't high on her list right now and the austere and brooding Donovan Darcy with the too young beautiful girl on his arm gets the full blast of it.

Donovan can't believe the nerve of the sassy female who challenges him while he's judging at a show that he really didn't want to be at anyway. She looks on him with near disgust so why does he want to know her better? His little sister wanted a fun trip to go shopping in NYC so here they are and all he can think about is Elizabeth Scott the woman he has run into a few times and each time she bristles up and treats him like a diseased pariah. But he could at least pity her after getting a front row seat at the restaurant when her family descended on her to celebrate her birthday. Embarrassing didn't even cover their loud behavior.

With her job up in the air, Lizzy accepts Sue Barrow's offer to return to London with them and help her get her terriers ready for several shows that will last through the month. It's a lovely opportunity and she jumps at it bringing her own sweet King Charles along and the promise of Jenna joining her later. Too bad she didn't know that the Barrows were across the street neighbors with none other than Donovan Darcy. She starts to realize that he has other sides to his character than that at which first appeared and she did totally misjudge the situation about his sister so she loosens up a little to spend some time around him just like Jenna is spending time with his best friend. They get caught in pictures for the tabloids a couple of times when they give in to the physical attraction they share and Darcy has a deluded and determined female out to land him for a husband. Lizzy won't forget for a moment that he's one of those rich people who are impervious to the stuff that affect the rest of the people like what was happening to her through her job.

Donovan is both enchanted and terrified of what is developing between him and Lizzy Scott, but he can't help pursuing her. It's not until the moment he recognizes his full feelings that Lizzy's secret and her fears rise up to destroy his chances with her.

The dog show backdrop to this one had me interested not because I'm a particular fan of dog breeding and showing (I've only ever owned mutts from the shelter or strays), but because it was something different. I did find the dogs cute and loved the way all the owners interacted with them.

I enjoyed meeting and getting to know all the characters in the story. I found Donovan Darcy swoonworthy even though he had his moments when I just wanted to pop him in the back of the head. He really didn't get how his silences and frowns would be misinterpreted. There was a sensitivity in him that allowed him to see others though. He might not get why Lizzy was angry with him, but he did see the anger and tried to assuage it. He was pretty patient with her all things considered and saw potential where most people would have just seen Too. Much. Bother.

Lizzy was a mixed bag for me. I liked and was proud of her for having the guts to stand up to the pressure at the school where she taught and do the right thing. I enjoyed her feistiness in the first scene with Donovan when she gives him some snark for his grumpiness. Her adventuresome spirit that led her to accept Sue Barrow's invitation met with my approval, but...
The whole 'I hate you and your nothing because you are rich and you all treat non-rich people like peons' attitude toward Donovan just didn't settle with me. If anyone was ashamed by her origins, it was Lizzy. Donovan didn't care that her family was from New Jersey and ran a bridal shop business. An otherwise intelligent and warm woman who gets accosted by a true slimeball is a bad thing in my books and I get her dislike of that man and men like him, but the thing is- he's a slimeball because of his character not his money. Normal people get that. Lizzy didn't. Donovan was cranky with her when they first meet, but then that all changed and she even saw the changes and many other wonderful things about him, but every little thing he did and said was now being filtered through a truly skewed lens so that she attributed really out there interpretations on everything. Her sister and her friend tried to tell her she had it wrong, but she swept their words aside. She was rude and obnoxious making her extremely unattractive to me so I couldn't buy the love angle. The man gets down on his knee in the mud and tells her he loves her and she declares that he doesn't when there's nothing in it for him to lie. Yeesh! Denial, much?
Sorry, had to vent! It's very possible that I had a stronger reaction to her than others will.

In the end, no matter how annoyed I was with Madame Obtuseness, I thought this story very delightful. It was good stuff and I look forward to more like it from this author. If you enjoy the idea of a slightly spicy retelling of a classic romance in a contemporary setting or are a dog lover who loves the world of dog breeding and shows, then you'll not want to pass this one up.

Perfectly adequate Modernization
By AnitaLove2Read
I'm a sucker for Jane Austin re-makes.  Especially Pride and Prejudice.  It's my favorite Austin novel, as well as my favorite movie of all times!  So it is always hard to pass up a modernized version.   I recently found a mime on Pinterest that said "All women want a Mr. Darcy.  Unfortunately all men have no idea who that is."  My guess is that this is about 99% truth.  (I tested it, asked my husband, "Do you know who Mr. Darcy is?"  The answer was no.  Which is surprising, since I watch the movie at least once a quarter.  Or at least every time I pick up a P&P remake.  It took everything in me not to put down this book and put in the movie this time around.

And there you have my review.  Sort of.  The modernization was good enough.  It centered around the dog show arena and of course the rich and...not-so-rich.  The book included plenty of Darcy, and Elizabeth moments, many of which avid fans will recoginize either from the book or by the movie.  In fact, many of the key phrases from the book were utilized here.  Elizabeth, true to the original, was a master of misunderstanding Darcy, but in this version it was almost to a fault.  In fact, I think that both the pride and the prejudice fell to Elizabeth most strongly in this rendition.  Mr. Darcy was constantly putting his foot in his mouth, and more than once I felt that Elizabeth's responses and disdain were uncalled for.  I got a bit frusterated with her refusal to hear Donovan Darcy out, and if I were him, I most certainly would have given up on trying after so long.  Mr. Darcy was charming and compassionate and understanding.  He was apparently quite handsome, although for some reason I had a hard time picturing this particular Darcy in my head.

The dog shows, while the common ground between Elizabeth and Darcy in this book, were really a rather small part of this novel.  I did enjoy the the bits that were there, but I think when I requested the book part of me had actually hoped on a few funny scenes and dog antics, but other than a scene of a dog peeing on beautiful carpet there really wasn't any thing like that.  I guess they were show dogs, and were trained to absolute perfection.

While I guess I didn't LOVE, love this book, I still always enjoy an Elizabeth and Darcy rendition, in its (at this point) many varieties.  I love the different interpretations of the brooding, overly-handsome Darcy, and Elizabeth's fumbling of the relationship.  If you're an Austin fan, and enjoy modernizations, I see now reason why you wouldn't enjoy this novel.
