Raiden Kuroshiro looked down at the woman standing beside him. Megumi was indeed her name. A beautiful blessing. With flawless white skin, gleaming raven hair and naturally red lips, she looked like a real live version of Snow White. And with her small, svelte body wrapped to perfection in that vivid blue dress, she did look like a fairy-tale princess. There was something regal about her bearing as she received everyone's congratulations on their engagement. Their wedding was exactly ten weeks from tonight.

And he felt absolutely nothing for her.

Thankfully, her feelings for him were as nonexistent.

Which was as it should be.

The reasons he was marrying Megumi, and the ones she had to marry him, didn't necessitate they even tolerated each other. Theirs would be a pure marriage of convenience.

Megumi looked up at him, ultrapoliteness playing on her dainty lips. Though smiling wasn't one of his usual activities, it was easy to answer her smile. Not that he had anything to do with it. Known as an angel, Megumi would get along with the devil himself. Which she did. Raiden was known as a fiend. He'd been called that during his years as a mercenary, and worse as he'd slashed his way to the top of the venture capitalism field and carved himself a permanent place there.

"I can join my mother if you like."

He barely heard Megumi over the traditional gagaku court music and the loud drone of the five hundred people filling the ballroom. It was the first time he'd been with that many members of Japanese society's upper crust in one place. It was his goal not only to belong to that class but to rule it. Megumi knew that, and she was thoughtfully offering to slip away so he could make the most of the event without her hindering presence.

Though it was a tempting offer, he shook his head. He was under said upper crust's microscope, and he knew it would be frowned upon to leave his bride-to-be in their first public appearance together, especially one dedicated to celebrating their impending union.

But at least he didn't have to play the besotted groom, as he would have had to in Western societies. It was a relief that in Japanese society prospective partners in traditionally arranged marriages demonstrated nothing more than utmost courtesy to each other. Which was easy with Megumi. He didn't have to feign gallantry with her.

Not that he liked her. He didn't like anyone. Apart from his Black Castle "brothers"—who were integral parts of his own being—he categorized people in limited roles. He had allies, subordinates and enemies. Megumi fell somewhere between the first two categories. He'd made her position in his life clear, and she seemed accepting of it.

Which she should. He was the wealthiest, most powerful husband and future father of her children she could have. Even if he weren't already the ultimate catch, as an obedient daughter, Megumi would have still married him. Her father wanted Raiden as family at any cost.

And that was the main reason he was marrying her. She was his only path to the one thing he'd dreamed of all his life, what he'd been working to achieve for the past ten years.

Reclaiming his birthright.

But though everything was going according to plan, one thing niggled at him. The other reason he was marrying Megumi was to have full-blooded Japanese heirs. Which meant he would have to…perform. He worried he wouldn't be able to. Not without falling back on what managed to thaw his deep-frozen libido. Fantasizing about her.

It was galling he'd have to resort to this measure to…rise to the occasion, but he was brutally pragmatic. He'd resort to whatever worked. Hopefully only once. With careful timing, it might be all it took to impregnate Megumi.

After conception, it was another major relief that most Japanese wives in arranged marriages mostly retreated to their own quarters, with their lives from then on revolving around their baby. From what he'd been hearing about the society that was still alien to him, in the kind of marriage he was entering, it was accepted that a husband's role was as a sperm donor and financier. His wife mostly relegated him to public social activities and appearances, with his intimacy sought again only when another baby was needed. Which was exactly the kind of marriage he wanted. The only kind he could stomach.

He looked at Megumi as she graciously smiled at another congratulator and wondered at his intense aversion to the idea of sex with her. If anyone knew he thought having sex with such a beauty was such a terrible fate, they'd question his virility. If they knew he'd have to invoke another woman's memory to go through with it, they'd think him pathetic. If they knew that woman had been a fraud, they'd question his judgment. But if they knew that not even finding out the truth about her had lessened her hold over him, it would totally decimate the uncompromising identity he presented to the world.

Not that anyone would ever learn of her. Or of any of his other dark secrets. He'd accumulated unspeakable ones during the twenty years when he'd been The Organization's slave. It was imperative the persona he'd built since his escape ten years ago remained unimpeachable. He wasn't letting anything threaten his chances of reclaiming his heritage.

To that end, he had to follow this society's rules until they became second nature to him. As they were to Megumi and her family. The family that had no idea he was one of them.

They'd never find out he was. But he would become one of them. He'd become a Hashimoto through marriage to—

Suddenly, a jolt speared through his body. It originated at his nape and forked down to his toes.

But the all-out alarm wasn't one of danger. He was versed in recognizing threats. This red alert was one of awareness.

Without any change in expression or posture, he threw the net of his senses out before yanking it back, eliminating everything but the source of the disturbance.

The next second, Megumi gripped his forearm.

He frowned. Megumi never touched him. So had his reaction been in anticipation of her touch? But why would she suddenly wring such a jarring response from him?

Turning his gaze down to her, he was relieved to feel no reaction to her sight and now touch, as usual. But the awareness searing through him was intensifying. It took all his control not to look around for its origin.

"Matsuyama-san is approaching."

So that was why she'd grabbed him so urgently—to draw his attention to the approach of their host. Hiro Mat-suyama. The man who'd gone all-out holding this ball in his mansion. And his bitterest business rival in Japan.

It still felt weird being honored by an adversary. But that was an expected ritual in Japan. A necessary one even. Tradition and decorum were valued above all in business as in society. It would take him a while to get used to that, along with everything else, as he hadn't been raised Japanese.

But then, he hadn't been raised at all. From the age of four years old, he'd been forged. Into a lethal weapon.

He let adversaries glimpse that side of him to keep them in check, showing them what they were really up against. But though Hiro posed his biggest business threat, compared with the monsters Raiden had vanquished in his time, Hiro was harmless. No, his senses couldn't be going haywire to herald his approach.

Turning to Megumi, he saw her eyes fixed, vaguely noted the glazed look in them, the tremor in her lower lip. His focus left her behind as the disruption grew in intensity.

Then he was facing Hiro…and the woman he had on his arm. And the realization was instantaneous.

She was the source of the disturbance.

She was the only female around who wasn't Japanese. Even the non-Japanese businessmen in attendance were married to Japanese women. It was the only way to truly enter society, the path to the most solid form of business alliances in Japan.

Every eye in the ballroom seemed to be following her.

The Japanese had strict parameters for their women's beauty. But most were enamored with Caucasian beauty and coloring. Most men obsessed about Western women, even if few approached them, because many of the qualities they so admired in the safety of fantasy proved intimidating in reality. All of those qualities were present in this woman.

She towered above everyone, flaunted her height even more with high heels. Hiro was tall for a Japanese man at almost six feet, and she stood taller. Only a couple of inches short of looking six-foot-four Raiden in the eyes.

She stood out in every other way, too. Among all the dark-haired people around, she looked like a flame-haired Amazon, tanned, curvaceous, bodacious, oozing sexuality and confidence. And among all the women in soft or bright colors, she was the only one in fathomless black. She looked every voluptuous inch the femme fatale, the opposite of everything considered desirable in a Japanese woman, the antithesis of the petite, porcelain-skinned, delicate and demure Megumi. Though one look at prevalent Japanese porn said she was the epitome of the nation's not-so-secret fantasies.

But he didn't share those fantasies, had none really. That came from the total discipline he'd trained in from early childhood, to hone his skills to inhuman precision. During his years with The Organization, he hadn't made use of the choice female companionship they'd provided to keep their agents placated. Since his escape, he'd remained as fastidious. The one time his shields had come crashing down had been with her.

But this woman was evoking the same…compulsion. When she wasn't even looking at him.

His awareness clung to her even as he forced his gaze to pan to Hiro as he bowed to Megumi. Raiden barely registered that her hand dug deeper into his forearm. Everything in him was focused on the other woman.

Hiro bowed stiltedly in answer to his own compulsory bow, before resuming looking at Megumi. "May I introduce Ms. Scarlett Delacroix, Megumi-san?"

As the ladies exchanged bows, his eyes were dragged back to the woman's profile. He barely tore them away as Hiro turned to him, his gaze colliding with his, the arm around Scarlett Delacroix's nipped waist visibly tightening.

Was Hiro announcing his claim? Telling Raiden not to think of making a move? Hiro assumed he would, with his brand-new fiancée standing at his side?

That would make Hiro more astute than Raiden had thought. He did want to make a move. Which stunned him, because he never did.

But maybe Hiro wasn't reading his aberrant reaction specifically, just believed Scarlett Delacroix was irresistible to any male. He would be right about that, too. If he with his ironclad control felt those unstoppable urges toward that vivid creature, other men must be champing at the bit.

But his reaction was indeed abnormal. He waded in gorgeous women and gave none a second glance. But this woman's effect had nothing to do with her physical attributes. It was identical to her effect. His every sense was clamoring so loud, as if in recognition…

This was beyond pathetic. Projecting his reactions to a long-gone and deceitful lover onto other women.

But then he'd never had anything approaching this reaction to any other woman. It was only this woman, this Scarlett….

"Scarlett, please meet Raiden Kuroshiro."

Hiro's grudging introduction yanked him out of his insane musings to find her extending her hand. His rose involuntarily to meet it…and static sparked at their touch.

Her hand lurched away, a gasp escaping her full lips, before they spread in an exquisite bow. "Serves me right for going for an all-synthetic, antiwrinkle gown," she said, explaining away the spark. "Now I need grounding."

Her accent was American, her voice too low to fathom clearly in the background din, but its warmth speared through his loins, made him grit his teeth.

Hiro pulled her more securely to his side. "It must be a mere manifestation of your electrifying personality."

Raiden aborted a snort at Hiro's hackneyed comment. But what he couldn't rein in was his rising hackles at Hiro's possessive attitude. He couldn't believe his reaction. He'd never felt confrontational with another man over a woman.

Then she turned fully to him, the smile on her lips not reaching her eyes as they met his for the first time. The bolt that hit him this time almost rocked him on his feet.

Those eyes. Those intense, luminescent sapphire blues. They were the same color of her eyes.

It was really getting ridiculous how he was trying to find similarities between the two completely different women.

"I hear congratulations are in order," Scarlett murmured, her gaze flitting from his eyes to Megumi's before he could hold it.

It couldn't be she was shy. This was a woman who knew her power over men, a power that must have been perfected through years of practice and exercised at will. He was certain there wasn't a diffident cell in that voluptuous body. So why didn't she want to look him in the eye?

"Scarlett had a prior engagement." Hiro turned to Scarlett, his gaze taking on a besotted edge. "But she still honored me with consenting to grace the ball."

"How could I not, when you organize the best balls in the northern hemisphere, Hiro?" Scarlett turned to Megumi with a warm smile. "Between you and me, I was hoping that by meeting the guests of honor of this ball, I might get my first invitation to a high-society Japanese wedding."

"If I'm invited—" Hiro shot Megumi a brief glance before resuming his adoration of Scarlett "—you certainly will be."

"We'd be honored to have you both grace the wedding." Megumi felt nowhere her usual serene self, her words brittle, her expression forced.

She didn't like Scarlett? Probably not many women did. Scarlett must be an ego crusher, especially to those females who considered themselves beautiful. For she was magnificent.

"I trust this is also Kuroshiro-san's sentiment?" Hiro asked, turning his challenging gaze to him.

In their previous meetings, Hiro had been reserved, but he'd made it clear their enmity would be kept to the financial battlefield. This time, though, he was struggling to hold back his aggression. Because he felt territorial over Scarlett?

Not that she'd given Hiro any reason to fear him. She'd barely looked in his direction so far.

Hiro, on the other hand, was still glaring at him, waiting for his corroboration. Raiden gave it to him with an inclination of his head.

Megumi's hand tightened. Was she urging him to vocalize his response? He knew he had to comply, or it would be taken as an offense. His silence so far had been bad enough.

He didn't feel like making a response. Right now the only thing he felt like doing was snatching Hiro's arm off Scarlett's waist and dragging her away from him.

Still, he said, "Matsuyama-san, Ms. Delacroix, your presence at our wedding isn't only our privilege, it's a necessity."

His deferential words didn't seem to appease Hiro. The man's response was perplexing, since Hiro had not only insisted on holding this ball, but had brought to his attention the very woman he was visually wrestling him over.

Thankfully, the stilted meeting came to an end shortly afterward, and Hiro and Scarlett moved on. Raiden forced himself not to watch them walk away. Not to watch her. But he could no longer bear having Megumi by his side.

Heartrending scenes plus much passion
By A. Richard
The Billionaires of Black Castle miniseries is about a group of men who were abducted when very young to be trained as mercenaries for a ruthless organization. After escaping from their ruthless capturers, they started business ventures which made them extremely wealthy. Now the goal of each is to crush those who made their lives miserable, and keep anyone else from suffering the same fate. The second book is about Raiden Kuroshiro who is determined to regain the Japanese heritage that was lost to him, and he is even willing to marry a woman he does not love. Then someone from his past reappears, throwing his carefully planned out plot into emotional turmoil. Harlequin Desire books by Olivia Gates are always known for their steamy love scenes and complicated emotional issues, and SCANDALOUSLY EXPECTING HIS CHILD showcases both to their fullest.

Although Raiden Kuroshiro just became engaged to a Japanese woman, neither is excited because there are no genuine feelings between them. His only interest lies in reclaiming the status he lost when The Organization kidnapped him and controlled his life for years. It has taken ten years, but his objective is about to be reached and a loveless marriage is a small price to pay. There has only been one woman in his life who actually affected him, but she ended up being a blackmailer so there is no one that he truly wants to marry.

When Raiden is introduced to the date of a rival businessman during his own engagement party, he is stunned to realize the exquisite beauty is the one who stars in his fantasies. Though she looks much different, he knows Scarlett Delacroix is the woman with whom he still feels a connection. While she thinks their seeing each other will only be once, Raiden has other ideas. He manages for them to come in contact again, where he makes an offer to have a sexual relationship with her for a short time. Raiden thought having sex with Scarlett would be enough for him to move on, but when he learns she is pregnant, he will have to decide what he wants most in life.

There are always lots of emotional concerns in any book by Olivia Gates, but those in SCANDALOUSLY EXPECTING HIS CHILD are some of the most heartrending I have ever read. Raiden and Scarlett have secrets in their past that they do not want others to know, and though she has discovered most of his, he still knows practically nothing about her background. What he uncovers will have a powerful effect on him, and the scenes where he and Scarlett discuss the past are movingly intense. Ms. Gates always writes with very vivid descriptions when it pertains to a person’s reactions, and those in SCANDALOUSLY EXPECTING HIS CHILD are particularly stirring. Any sex between these two is definitely explosive with profound feelings being involved along with plenty of lusty eagerness. Also, the Japanese culture comes alive with clever facts.

A little more information about the other men in The Billionaires of Black Castle miniseries comes to light in this book, and what I learned made each of them more interesting. From cunning behavior to dry wit, each of these influential men are individuals about whom I want to know more and hope to get the chance.

The two together was the best either one ever experienced
By D. Guyette
The second book in The Billionaires of Black Castle, Scandalously Expecting His Child by Olivia Gates take us to Japan.

When self-made billionaire Raiden Kuroshiro escaped his brutal past, he vowed to reclaim the heritage that was stolen from him. With his engagement to Megumi, he is close to achieving his goals. Then the one woman who betrayed him, the one woman he never forgot, returns and Raiden finds himself unable to stay away from her. He refuses to allow his irresistible desire for Scarlett Delacroix to keep him from achieving his goals. The only problem is that he cannot stop his desire for her. He thinks a short affair should get her out of system and then he can continue on. He does not count on Scarlett becoming pregnant. Nor does he count on falling for her again. She and the baby have no role in his plans. Unless he changes his plans.

Raiden had felt betrayed by Scarlett’s action in the past. He needed closure and went after it. He got so much more. Scarlett was caught also in the web made of desire. The two together was the best either one ever experienced. But having Scarlett meant giving up his goals, something Raiden was not willing to do.

Hop on for the bumpy ride only Olivia Gates can give us and watch as these two start out on the wrong foot. Scandalously Expecting His Child by Olivia Gates has fantastic romance in its pages designed to leave us with a sigh and a smile. Don’t miss the second story in The Billionaires of Black Castle and watch as Raiden learns love is the most powerful force of all.

*happy sigh*

Rating~ 4 stars

Short review:
This is the second book in the Billionaires from Blackcastle series by Olivia Gates. This time it's about Lightning aka Raiden Kuroshiro and Hannah aka Scarlett Delacroix.

Like in the series predecessor book, Raiden and Scarlett also had amazing chemistry and a very strong connection. Raiden and Scarlett have a past, they met years ago and fell in love but then a betrayal lead to them leading separate lives and 'Hannah' disappearing from Raiden's world.

Scarlett is the only one apart from his brothers that Raiden had ever left anything for. Now that she's back Raiden wants answers well he wants her & the answers and it doesn't matter that he's engaged and is so close to getting his family back which was taken from him so early in his childhood.

The blurb of the book really doesn't do it justice, the book was so much more. It had passion, some shocking secrets, betrayals and a second chance at love and family.

Quibbles: If it were me I wouldn't forgive what Scarlett easily forgave her friend for, it made Scarlett and Raiden both miserable.

Overall, I really liked this book and will be impatiently waiting for Phantom's book which will be releasing in march next year. Happy Reading!

"Unca Zen!"

Zane laughed. "Hey, sport. I can see you on my computer. Can you see me?"

"Yes."

"Did you get those little cars I sent you?"

"I like this one." The three-year-old held it up for Zane to see. As far as he was concerned, Skype was the best cyberinvention ever.

"Say thank-you to your uncle," he heard Sadie say in the background.

"Thank you. When are you coming?"

"Pretty soon. I still have work to do."

"But I want you to come home!"

Zane could tell his brother's son was getting ready to cry.

He got a huge lump in his throat. "There's nothing I want more, too. Guess what?"

"What?"

"I'll be there for my vacation on the Fourth of July." Three weeks away. He was living for it. "We're going to have a big party with fireworks at my house!"

"Goody!" Ryan turned to Sadie. "What's fireworks?"

"She'll show you, sport. Has Jarod taken you riding?"

The boy nodded his blond head. "The horse scared me. He's huge."

Laughter poured out of Zane. "They are kind of big."

"I'm getting a pony."

"When?"

"Pretty soon," Sadie volunteered. "You'll be a very lucky boy." Zane heard her whispering to Ryan. "She says I have to go to bed. I don't want to!" He started crying. "But you need your sleep."

"No— I want you—"

"Say good-night, Ryan."

"No-o—"

Zane heard talking in the background. Ryan was becoming more unmanageable. Someone else had come into the room. He could hear Sadie saying they had to go.

"Don't go, Unca Zen—" Ryan wailed, sounding like his heart would break.

Sadie poked her head into view. "Sorry. This little guy is tired."

"I can tell. Who's there with you?"

"Avery just dropped by."

His adrenaline kicked in. "Put her on."

"Just a minute." He heard more talking. "Come on over here, Avery. Zane wants to say hello. Tell him what's going on at the Bannock ranch while I put Ryan down."

The boy was in complete meltdown mode as they left the room. His nephew's cries grew fainter and Zane's heart started pounding harder as he waited to see the woman who kept him awake nights.

His breath caught when she sat down in front of the camera. "Hi, Zane. I guess you can't tell your nephew adores you."

"The feeling's mutual. How are you?"

"Good. Busy. I'm surprised you've come out from undercover long enough to manage this Skype session."

"I'll always make time for my family."

"Now that you've been working there for a while, do you like the Glasgow area?"

"It's all right, but I'd rather be back on my ranch. Matt has the whole burden on his shoulders when I'm away like this."

"He carried most of it all the years he worked for Daniel Corkin. I don't hear any complaints."

"Matt isn't the type to complain. I'm lucky he was willing to be my foreman after Daniel died. But let's not talk about that. I want to know what's happening in your world."

"Since Jarod's not home yet, and it'll be a while before Ryan goes to sleep, I'll tell you a secret. Jarod is driving us all crazy waiting for his offspring to arrive. He's due in five weeks. I swear Jarod's going to wear a hole in the floor of their new house."

"He's still worried about Sadie?"

"More than ever. I've never seen him this bad. I know she s had a lot of morning sickness, but the doctor says she's fine. Jarod doesn't believe him."

"I guess that's not so hard to understand. Sadie's mom died soon after childbirth."

"But Sadie's not her mom. That heart operation was successful and she's fine now. But you can't tell Jarod that. He bites your head off. We have to walk on eggshells around him. He used to work all hours of the day on the ranch. Now he comes home every few hours, and the rest of the time he's on the phone with her."

"The man's in love." Zane could relate in the most profound of ways.

"Between you and me, he's driving her crazy."

"But never too crazy. Trust me on that. When she was in San Francisco, he was never off her mind for a single second. Those two should have been together years ago."

You and I should be together now.

"I know. I try not to think about that. But this countdown to the baby is getting hard on everyone. The other day Grandpa got so fed up he told him to take a ride in the mountains and commune with nature. It's gotten so serious even Uncle Charlo has no wisdom to impart. When I was out on the reservation the other day and talked to him about Jarod, he actually shook his head, indicating he had nothing. I've never seen him do that before."

"Well, it won't be long before the baby comes."

"That's easy for you to say. You're not here to watch Jarod implode on a daily basis."

Zane burst into laughter, causing her to chuckle.

"I'll give him a call and try to reassure him that Sadie's tough."

"I've seen that strength. She's already become a mother to her own half brother. Sadie has a remarkable capacity to love. Jarod relies on that love. It's really touching to watch the two of them."

The wistfulness in her tone wasn't lost on Zane, who couldn't take the separation from Avery much longer.

"I'm afraid I need to get off now. Grandpa is waiting for me."

No-o—

Zane felt exactly like Ryan. "I guess I'll be seeing all of you on the Fourth of July for the big family get-together."

"It'll be fun. I've enjoyed talking to you, Zane. Hold on while I tiptoe to Ryan's room. Sadie will want to say good-night." There was a slight pause. "Take care," she said with a throb in her voice he felt go through his system. It was always there…that little nuance of emotion that told him she missed him, but she'd never admit it.

"The same back to you, Avery."

Another Monday morning, but it had started out with a surprise phone call that left Avery Bannock frightened and tense. She'd had to leave the Crow Indian dig site where she was working outside Absarokee, Montana, and drive all the way to Bozeman, Montana.

Once inside the police department on Sixteenth Street, she approached the sergeant at the front desk. "A Detective Rymer phoned me two hours ago and asked me to come in because he needed to tell me certain information in person. He said it was urgent." After hearing that message, the warm June morning she'd awakened to had been lost on her.

The officer nodded. "Go down the left hall to the first door on the right."

"Thank you."

She hadn't been inside this building for eight years, but the emergency that had brought her here would haunt her for her entire life. "Detective Rymer?"

He stood up when she entered the small office. "Ms. Bannock?"

"Yes."

"I'm glad you came so fast." He shook her hand and asked her to be seated. "Detective Palmer, who has worked tirelessly on your case, is having back surgery at the moment and asked me to take over for him."

"Was he injured in the line of duty?"

"No. He has a recurring ailment that needed to be fixed."

"I'm glad that's the reason, but I'm sorry for him. He's been a great support to me."

"To you and a lot of people. We're all waiting for him to come back."

"You said this was urgent?"

"Very. I'll get right to the point. The man who assaulted you on September 10, eight years ago, outside the women's dormitory on campus at Montana State University, was captured in Helena, Montana, last week."

What? She reeled. "Is that the truth?"

"Forensics matched his DNA with the DNA taken from you and two other victims."

Two others? She shuddered. "I can't believe it! After eight years…"

"I'm sure it has seemed like a lifetime. He's a thirty-nine-year-old Caucasian male from Butte, Montana. In the past eight years he's been responsible for two other assaults that the police know of and probably many more.

"Unfortunately those victims who didn't go to a hospital and notify the police will never know that he's been arrested. After his trial he'll spend the rest of his life in prison. If there's any good news in all this, it's that you no longer need to fear that he will be back to assault you again."

She put a hand to her mouth and jumped up from the chair. "Thank God."

"All the particulars are here in the report if you want to look at it."

"No—" she said. "Not right now. I couldn't." Though she'd promised that she would be willing to testify against the person if he was ever brought to trial, the thought of having to divulge all the details again in front of a room full of people made her ill.

He eyed her with compassion. "I understand. Detective Palmer will want to talk to you when he's recovered. He'll be the one to keep you informed when the suspect is brought to trial for his crimes. You can discuss all that with him when he's back on his feet."

"Thank you."

Avery rushed out of the office and down the corridor to the front lobby, but everything was a blur. When she reached her truck in the parking lot and climbed inside, she broke down in a convulsion of tears.

A half hour passed before she lifted her head, once again aware of her surroundings. Pulling herself together as best she could, she reached for her cell phone and called Dr. Moser, her psychologist. When she got the other woman on the line and told her the incredible news, the doctor who practiced on the other side of town asked her to come to her office straightaway.

Once inside, Dr. Moser enveloped her in a fierce hug, causing Avery to shed more tears when she hadn't thought it possible. "I don't have to be frightened that he's stalking me any longer."

"That's true and takes away a whole world of stress."

Avery sat down. "But not all of it," she admitted.

"No. With two other victims, there will be a trial and then you'll have to decide if you want to go through it and face him. For now it's enough to know he's been caught. I can't tell you how proud I am of you. Only a small percentage of victims come forward. How wonderful that you listened to your half brother's aunt and did the right thing by calling the police right away and getting to a hospital."

One day Avery would thank Jarod's Aunt Pauline for her wisdom. By listening to her, she now had closure, even if it had taken eight years for her assailant to be caught.

"You have a special kind of courage that's going to get you through this life. Mark my words. One day you're going to know real happiness again. With this news you can live your life without always having to look over your shoulder in fear. I'll call the pharmacy in White Lodge and refill your prescription. Is there anything else I can do?"

"You've been here for me. I'll always be thankful for that."

Avery had been fighting to get her life back since the night the assault had happened, but this news was like receiving a "get out ofjail free" card, even if it couldn't take away the horrendous memory of it.

She thanked the doctor and left for the dig site. Work helped her keep her sanity, especially on a day like this when she didn't know what to do with all the new emotions flooding her system. It was so automatic to worry that her assailant might try to attack her again that she'd probably continue to worry out of habit for a long time. Hopefully the news that he'd been caught would finally sink in.

All these years of fearing he would target her again had left their mark. Now that it was over, she could breathe a little deeper. But since there were other assailants out there, the fear would never completely go away.

Today had to be a new beginning—the start of a happy future—but she still couldn't comprehend it. Happiness was found in all kinds of ways, but she feared that the kind of joy she longed for with the man she'd loved for the past year would always elude her. After talking to him over Skype at Sadie and Jarod's ranch house the other night, her thoughts had been filled with him.

He was coming home for the Fourth of July, but it was just a vacation. Then he'd go back to northern Montana where he'd be unavailable for who knew how many months. But none of it mattered because even if he was attracted to her, he wouldn't be able to handle what had happened to her if he ever found out.

Good story
By S. Frank
Good story between two wounded souls. Avery is an archaeologist working on a local dig and living on her grandfather's ranch. Being close to family and friends has been good for her, as she recovers from her painful past. A year earlier she had met Zane Lawson, a former SEAL who is now working for the BLM. She's attracted to him, but is having trouble overcoming her past.

After ten years as a SEAL, Zane is happy to be working law enforcement for the BLM. After a year working across the state from his ranch, he's been transferred nearby and will be able to work from his own home. This will finally give him a chance to get to know Avery better. As he is assigned to investigate the thefts of artifacts from the reservation where she works, he looks at it as a perfect opportunity.

Zane soon discovers that what he thought was simple shyness is something much more. He suffers from symptoms of PTSD himself, and recognizes them in Avery. I loved the way he talked to his own doctor and got information on how to help her. His sensitivity to her fears was wonderful, and I loved how he handled them even before she told him what had happened to her. Avery had been in love with Zane for months, but because of what happened feels that a future with him is not possible. When he tells her of his feelings, she knows she has to tell him what happened to her. She worries that it will make him look at her differently, and draw away from her. She's stunned to discover that he had already suspected and that it made no difference to his feelings.

The care with which Zane treats Avery is wonderful. He's sweet and patient and loving, which is exactly what she needs. I loved seeing how it helped Avery. It didn't suddenly make everything go away, but she does feel stronger and more in control. I also loved seeing her be able to turn around and offer the same kind of care to him.

The artifact stealing storyline was very good. I enjoyed the background information on the Crow people that was part of it. I liked the way that Zane made Avery part of the investigation, and how much he came to respect her knowledge. It was pretty obvious from the beginning who the ringleader of the bad guys was, but the investigation itself was interesting. The ending was pretty intense, especially when it was combined with Avery's fears.

Sweet but not enough loving.
By Fallen3
It was pretty good. It was a very clean book. Glad it didn't have the cuss words, but I like a little more loving in my books. It got depressing at times because it dealt with a serious issue but it was ok. Likable H & h. No TSTL moments. I probably would have rated it a five had it had had more loving in it.
It's a sweet book.

Healing love
By Kindle Customer
Avery couldn't have asked for a better guy to help heal with the past. Their love helped both of them heal. It shows that love can conquer all. It was a great love story.

Cari Chandler paused in the doorway of the conference room. On the far wall was a portrait of her grandfather looking very young and very determined. Since he'd never been a "happy" man, she hardly noticed that he wasn't smiling. He certainly wouldn't be convivial at this moment when the grandson of his most-hated enemy was in his stronghold.

Since the late '70s the Chandlers and the Montroses had been feuding and trying to cut each other out of the video-game market. Her grandfather had won that long-ago skirmish by making a deal with a Japanese company, cutting Thomas Montrose out, but none of that mattered today as the Montrose heirs and their Playtone Games had just delivered the feudending blow with their hostile takeover of Infinity Games. And leaving Cari and her sisters, Emma and Jessi, to pick up the wreckage and try to forge some sort of deal that would save their jobs and their legacy.

But Cari as COO was the one who'd been chosen to deal with Declan Montrose. It made sense, since operations were her area, but the secret she'd been harboring for too long suddenly felt like it had a choke hold on her, and she wished she'd confided in her sisters so that maybe she wouldn't have to deal with Dec today.

The conference table was long and made of dark wood, and the chairs positioned around it were leather. She focused on the details of the room instead of the man she saw standing by the window. He hadn't changed much in the eighteen months since she'd last seen him.

From the back she could see his reddish-brown hair was a little longer than it had been before, but was still thick and curly where it hit his collar. His shoulders were still as broad, tapering to a narrow waist and that whipcord-lean frame that she'd remembered pressed against her as he'd held her. A shiver of sensual awareness coursed through her.

Don't. Don't think of any of that, she warned herself. Focus on the takeover. One problem at a time.

"Dec." She called his name. Her voice sounded strong, which pleased her since inside she was quaking. "I didn't think I'd see you again."

"I'm sure it's a pleasant surprise," he said with a sardonic grin as he left the window and walked over to stand not more than six inches from her.

The familiar smell of his spicy, outdoorsy aftershave surrounded her, and she closed her eyes as she remembered how strongly the scent had lingered on his skin right at the base of his neck. Then she forced herself to get it together, crossing her arms over her chest and remembering he was here for business. The knock at the door provided her with the distraction she needed. "Come in," she called.

Ally, her assistant, entered with two Infinity Games logo mugs, handing one to Dec and giving the other to Cari. Cari walked around to the head of the table, already feeling more in control now that Dec was on the other side of it from her. She was aware of Ally asking if Dec needed anything in his coffee and him answering he took it black, and then Ally was gone.

"Please sit down," she invited, gesturing to the chair across from hers.

"I don't remember you being so formal," he said as he pulled out a chair and took his seat.

She ignored that remark. Really, what could she say? From the moment she'd first seen him she'd been attracted to him. Even after she'd learned he was a Mon-trose and technically her family's enemy, she'd still wanted him.

"I assume you're here to talk about moving assets around in my company," she said.

He nodded. "I'll be spending the next six weeks doing an assessment of the assets in the company and on this campus here. I understand you have three different gaming divisions?"

Wow. She should have been prepared for it, but he'd just completely shut off his emotions and switched to business. She wanted to be able to do the same, but she'd never been that good at hiding what she felt. Cyborg, she'd heard him called. He lived up to that moniker today.

He looked over at her and she realized she was just staring at him. This wasn't going to work. She'd call Emma, her oldest sister and the chief executive officer of Infinity, as soon as he left and tell her that she or Jessi would have to work with Dec. Though to be fair, as chief marketing officer, Jessi wasn't really the one who should be handling Dec.

"Cari?"

"Sorry. Yes, they all report to me—online, console and mobile."

"I will need to set up meetings with everyone in the company. The way this will work is that each person will be assessed and rated, and then I will give a presentation to our combined board of directors with my recommendations."

"No problem. Emma mentioned you wanted to talk to the staff. Do you think you'll just be here one or two days a week?" she asked, mentally crossing her fingers.

"No. I want to set up an office so I can be here in the thick of things," he said, leaning forward. "Is that going to be a problem?"

"Not at all," she said with the only smile she could muster. She'd rather not see him ever again, but that wasn't going to happen and she was mature so she could deal with it. She knew her smile must have looked forced when he laughed.

"You were never good at hiding your feelings," he said.

She shook her head. Though his statement was true, it wasn't something that he could know from personal experience. They'd had a one-night stand, not a relationship. "Don't say it like that. You don't know me at all. We only had one date and one night together."

"I think I got a fairly good impression of you," he said.

"Really?" she asked. She told herself to let it go and just concentrate on the business end of things, but that was going to be impossible. "Then why'd you leave me alone in that hotel room?"

He leaned back in his chair and took a long swallow of his coffee before standing up to pace around the room to her side of the table. He leaned back against the table and stared down at her, and she was tempted to stand up so he wasn't towering over her. But she didn't want him to think he intimated her.

"I'm not really a man for attachments," he said at last. "And though you think I don't know you, Cari Chandler, I'd have to be a blind fool not to see that you care too much."

She wanted to deny it, but the truth was she was the bleeding heart of the Chandler family. She volunteered, donated time and money to charities and causes and she'd fallen for more than one sob story at work. Emma had been furious at first, until she realized it made their employees loyal because they felt that the executive management cared.

"I wasn't going to cling to you and profess undying love, Dec," she said. She barely knew him after one sex-filled night. She might have been interested in seeing him again and getting to know him better, but she'd learned all she needed to know when he'd left her. "It was only one night."

"It was a fabulous night, Cari," he said, putting his hand on the back of her chair and spinning her around to face him. "Maybe I should remind you of how good we are together."

She pushed the chair back, standing up. It was time for her to take control of this meeting. "Not necessary. While I remember the details of the night, it's really the morning after that stuck with me."

"That's why I left," he said in that wry way of his. "I'm not good at dealing with the aftermath."

"Aftermath?" she asked.

"You know, the emotional stuff women usually bring up," he said. "The clingy things."

She shook her head. It was clear that a one-night stand was all that Dec intended for her to be. With her secret looming in her mind, she knew she had to say something about their night together, but for now she wasn't going to. She would focus on the business and try to figure out a way to save her family's legacy from being dismantled and destroyed.

Though she had to admit hearing Dec talk made her sad because she wanted better for herself. She had wanted to hear him say he wished he hadn't left and that he'd thought of her every day… Probably what he would term emotionally clingy stuff.

"Disappointed?" he asked.

"I guess I know why an eligible billionaire like you is still single," she said, trying not to be disenchanted that he was exactly like she'd thought he was. She'd hoped she'd just caught him on a bad day.

"Maybe the right girl just hasn't tried hard enough to change me," he said with a cocky half grin.

"Oh, you don't seem like the sort of man who can be changed," she said.

"Touche. I'm happy with my life. But that doesn't mean I don't know how to appreciate a woman like you when our paths cross."

She wanted to stay angry with him, but he was honest and she couldn't fault him there. Even though she'd hoped for longer with Dec, she'd known from the moment they'd gone to dinner that all he wanted was an affair.

"I think I'd have more luck changing the direction of the Santa Ana winds," she said.

"Have dinner with me and we can find out," he said.

"Would you be willing to discuss Playtone Games being a silent partner in Infinity?"

He laughed. "Not happening."

"Then neither is dinner." No matter how much he cajoled she needed distance and a chance to really think before she just jumped back into something foolish with him.

"We have to work together, so I don't think us spending time together outside the office would be wise," she said at last. She used to be more impulsive, but wasn't anymore. Her one-night stand with this man had reminded her there were consequences for acting without thinking.

"The Cari I know doesn't make decisions with only her head."

"I've changed," she said bluntly. Maybe if she hadn't fallen for his smooth-talking ways and blunt sexuality. What?

"I like it," he said slickly.

Cari knew she had to face facts that the man she'd had a one-night stand with was back in town. And it was becoming abundantly clear that a corporate takeover was the least of her problems. She was going to have to tell him about her son…his son.

Their son.

And she had no idea how to do that.

Cari had changed. That was easy to see even for a guy who'd spent only one night in her company. Dec knew things between them had always seemed complicated. Never more so than now. Their families were hated enemies of each other and his cousin, Keller Montrose, the CEO of Playtone Games, wasn't going to be happy unless Infinity was completely broken apart so that nothing of Gregory Chandler's legacy remained.

And this pretty blonde woman standing before him was going to be nothing more than collateral damage.

Dec had never been able to see her as his hated enemy. From the first moment he'd laid eyes on her he'd wanted to know more about her—and not so he could figure out how to use that information to take over her company.

Being adopted, Dec never truly felt like a real Mon-trose and was always striving to prove he was as loyal as both Kell and their other cousin, Allan McKinney.

Being back in California, conveniently with Cari, seemed his chance to do his job and continue to prove his worth to the Montrose family, as well as hopefully reconnect with the woman he hadn't been able to forget. With her thick blond hair that fell in smooth waves past her shoulders and her pretty cornflower-blue eyes, she'd haunted him. He couldn't forget the way she'd looked up at him as he'd held her in his arms.

Now that he had the chance to get a proper look at her, he could see the year and a half they'd been apart had added a quiet confidence to her. He started at her tiny feet in those pretty brown two-inch heels and moved upward. Her ankles were still trim, but her calves seemed more muscular. The hem of her skirt kept him from seeing any more of her legs but her hips seemed fuller…more pronounced. Her waist was still impossibly small, he noted, as the button on her jacket flaunted. Her breasts—whoa, they were a lot larger. She'd been slim and small but she was much—

"Eyes up here, buddy," she said, pointing to her baby blues.

He shrugged and then smiled at her. "I can see that you have changed a lot in the past year. Your figure is much fuller than before, but I like that."

He walked toward her with a long, languid stride and she backed up until there was nowhere for her to go. She put her hand up to stop him, keeping him an arm's length away. He stood there, staring down into her eyes, and had to admit there was something different about her. It was in her eyes. She watched him more closely than she had before.

She looked tired and he thought, well, duh, Playtone had finally gotten the upper hand on Infinity Games and she was more than likely worried about her job.

He backed away from her. "Sorry. I didn't mean to come on too strong. I'm sure losing your company to us was a shock."

"That's a bit of an understatement."

He smiled at the way she said it. "I'm a little jetlagged still."

"Jet-lagged? I wasn't aware that there was a time zone between the Infinity Games campus and the Play-tone offices," she said.

She gave up nothing. And he wondered how he could have missed this side to Cari eighteen months ago. But then he'd been in full-on lust and it was safe to say his brain hadn't been controlling him.

"I've been in Australia for a little over a year managing our takeover of Kanga Games."

"You let them keep their corporate identity," she said.

"They didn't screw our grandfather over."

"My sisters and I didn't either. We've always dealt with you and your cousins fairly."

"I'm afraid that doesn't matter when it comes to revenge," he said.

"Surely profit matters."

"It does."

She nodded and moved back to her chair. He sat down and so did she. She steepled her fingers together and he noticed she wore a ring on her right hand now that she hadn't before. It was a platinum band of hearts with a row of diamonds in the center. It seemed the kind of ring a lover would have given her. Was she involved with someone now?

Maybe that was where her new confidence stemmed from. She had a lover now. Well, he could be happy for her. Even though he regretted that he might not ever get to kiss her again.

"When did you get back from Australia?" she asked as she toyed with the ring. Those little gestures seemed to indicate her nervousness, though the rest of her body language didn't support that.

"Saturday, but I'm still adjusting. And seeing you again surprised me," he admitted, reaching for his briefcase, which he'd stowed next to his chair, and putting it on the table. He had his computer and the files he'd already started studying on the takeover.

"How did it surprise you? I knew you'd be here this morning," she said. "Didn't you know it would be me?"

"Yes, Emma informed me via email," he said. He wasn't about to tell her that he'd never expected to react so strongly to her presence. Not now. He'd thought since they'd slept together all the chemistry would be gone…but he'd been wrong.

The mystery of her body had been revealed to him. There wasn't an inch of it he didn't remember, though he realized now, with the flesh-and-blood woman standing before him, that those memories were a pale imitation of the real thing.

Boring
By Kelly
The story was under two hundred pages but it took me two days to read it. I normally read that much in half a day depending on what I'm doing. The leading lady was flat with no personality. The leading man was just as bad.

It was good..SPOILERS
By Amazon Customer
I liked this book. I do wish that there was more love shown on both of their parts. I BARELY felt it and more from the hero than the heroine because she said she was already in love with him but with him, you saw him fall in love. The hero was scared about having a family but as soon as he saw the picture of his son, he was in serious awe. It is his first blood relative that he has ever had and he is stunned by that. Of course he is mad at the heroine for not telling him but he gets over it fast. Neither one can stay mad at the other. They have a disagreement and then they are laughing or smiling at something. It was cool to see a couple who does not go days without talking because of anger. I do think that the heroine overreacted at the end but she also realized that she did that same night. The hero also felt he should have handle the ending better and goes after her after he sets a plan in motion to fix it. They literally make up the VERY next morning!!! The reason I took a star away was for an editing issue. While making up, the heroine and her son go on the hero's boat and he kisses them hello, he then pulls heroine into a tight hug where she wraps both arms around him. Where was the baby?? That is a pretty big thing to forget to write in especially after he was just mentioned. It is a boat so they did not put him down just to hug and make out. It just stuck in my mind that the baby was missing for a moment and then the couple are in the car with the baby again! Oh well!! It was a decent story!

"How does that make you feel, Annabelle?" The male voice lingered over the word "feel," adding a disgusting layer of sleaze.

Annabelle tilted her head to the side, her gaze locked on Dr. Fitzherbert, though the other patients in the "trust circle" remained in her periphery. In his early forties, the doctor had thinning salt and pepper hair, dark brown eyes and perfectly tanned, though slightly lined, skin. At five ten, he was only a bit taller than her, on the thin side and, if you ignored the blackness of his soul, moderately attractive.

The longer she stared at him, silent, the more his lips curled upward. How that smugness grated—not that she'd ever let him know. She would never willingly do anything to please him.

He'd drugged her once. Well, he'd drugged her every day of his two-month employment at the Moffat County Institution for the Criminally Insane. But last night he had sedated her with the express purpose of stripping her, touching her in ways he shouldn't and taking pictures.

Such a pretty girl, he'd said. Out there in the real world, a stunner like you would make me work for something as simple as a dinner date. Here, you're completely at my mercy. You're mine to do with as I please. Mine to control.

Humiliation still burned hot and deep, a fire in her blood. She'd like to say he was the first medical professional to violate her confidence. Yeah, she'd like to say that.

Over the last four years, the doctors and nurses in charge of her care had changed more times than her roommates, some of them shining stars of their profession, others simply going through the motions, doing what needed doing, while a select few were worse than the convicted criminals they were supposed to treat.

"Annabelle," Fitzpervert chided. "Silence isn't to be tolerated."

Well, then. "I feel like I'm one hundred percent cured. You should probably let me go."

He frowned with exasperation, all I'm such a good doctor and I could save you if only you'd let me. "You know better than to answer my questions so flippantly. That doesn't help you deal with your emotions or your problems. That doesn't help anyone here deal with their emotions or problems."

"Ah, so I'm a lot like you then." As if he cared about helping anyone but himself.

Several patients snickered. A couple merely drooled, foamy bubbles falling from babbling lips and catching on the shoulders of their gowns.

Fitzpervert's frown morphed into a scowl, the pretense of being here to help vanishing. He enjoyed his power, and he would not hesitate to strike at her for challenging it. "That smart mouth will get you into trouble." Not a threat. A vow.

Didn't matter. Her "smart mouth" was her life raft, her only way of fighting back. She lived in constant fear of creaking doors, shadows and footsteps. Of drugs and people and…things. Of herself.

The innocent, naive girl she'd once been was dead, killed the same day as her parents, the ghost somehow alive inside her, haunting her. At the worst times, she would remember things she had no business remembering.

Taste this, honey. It'll be the best thing you've ever eaten!

A terrible cook, her mother. Saki had loved to tweak recipes to "improve" them.

Did you see that? Another touchdown for the Sooners!

A diehard football fan, her dad. He had attended OU in Oklahoma for three semesters, and had never cut those ties.

She would remember, and she would cry. She would crave the things that had once been—the things that should have been. But okay, fine, whatever. Whaa, whaa, whaa, she'd lost the people she loved. So had millions of other people. She was dealing.

When she failed to give an outward reaction to his threat, Fitzpervert's scowl darkened, his gaze dropping and lingering on the mouth he'd just rebuked. Within seconds, the fire in his eyes no longer spoke of anger but of lust.

The fear she so despised crept cold fingers down her spine. He'll come to my room tonight. Only this time, I'll be prepared. Her old toothbrush was now the perfect shank. One thing she'd learned over the years was that she could rely on no one but herself. Her complaints of foul treatment went unheeded, because most higher-ups believed she deserved what she got. If they believed her at all.

"I'd love to tell you how I feel, Dr. Fitzherbert," the man beside her said.

Fitzpervert cleared his throat before skating his attention to the serial arsonist who'd torched an entire apartment building, along with the men, women and children living inside of it.

As they discussed feelings and urges and ways to control them both, she tuned them out. For the most part, at least. Wherever she was, whomever she was with, she kept part of herself alert. A girl never knew when a threat would make itself known, be that threat human or…otherwise.

Out of habit, she studied her surroundings. The room was as dreary as her circumstances. There were ugly yellow water stains on the paneled ceiling, the walls were a peeling gray, and the floor carpeted with frayed brown shag. The uncomfortable metal chairs the occupants sat upon were the only furniture. Of course, Fitzpervert luxuriated on a special cushion.

Meanwhile, Annabelle's hands were cuffed behind her back and hooked to the sides of her chair, straining muscles and tendons already sore from abuse. Considering the amount of sedatives pumping through her system, the cuffs were overkill. But four weeks ago she'd brutally fought two fellow patients, and two weeks ago one of her nurses, so she was considered too much of a menace to leave unrestrained, no matter that she'd only been fighting to defend herself.

For the past thirteen days, she'd been kept in the hole, a dark, padded room where deprivation of the senses slowly drove you (genuinely) insane. She had been starved for contact, and had thought any interaction would do—until Fitzpervert drugged and photographed her.

This morning, he'd arranged this outing for her. A be nice to me, and I'll be nice to you bribe.

If my parents could see me now… She bit back a sudden, choking sob as she imagined her mother. A fall of hair so black the strands had appeared blue, much like Annabelle's own. Eyes uptilted and golden, much like Annabelle's used to be. Skin a rich, creamy mix of honey and cinnamon, with not a single flaw. Saki Miller—once Saki Tanaka—had been born in Japan but raised in Georgetown, Colorado.

Saki's traditional parents had freaked when she and the white-as-can-be Rick Miller fell hopelessly in love and married. He'd come home from college on holiday, met her, and moved back to be with her.

Both Annabelle and her older brother were a combination of their parents' heritages. They shared their mother's hair and skin, the shape of her face, yet had their father's height and slender—though in Brax's case, strong—build.

Although, Annabelle's eyes no longer belonged to either Saki or Rick.

Once her eyes had been a pretty golden brown. Normal. After that horrible morning in her garage, after her arrest for their murders, after her conviction, her lifelong sentencing to this institution for the criminally insane, she'd finally found the courage to face herself in a mirror. What she'd seen had startled her. Eyes the color of winter ice, deep in the heart of an Arctic snowstorm, eerie and crystalline, barely blue with no hint of…humanity. Worse, she could see things with these eyes, things no one should ever have to see.

Case in point: as the "trust circle" yammered on, two creatures simply walked through the far wall, stopping to orient themselves. She looked at her fellow patients, expecting to hear shrieks of terror. No one else seemed to notice the visitors.

How could they not? One creature had the body of a horse and the torso of a man. Rather than skin, he was covered by glimmering silver…metal? His hooves were rust-colored and possibly some kind of metal as well, sharpened into deadly points.

His companion was shorter, with stooped shoulders weighed down by sharp, protruding horns, and legs twisted in the wrong direction. He wore a loincloth and nothing else, his chest furred, muscled and scarred.

The scent of rotten eggs filled the room, as familiar as it was horrifying. Fear and anger, though muted by the drugs in her system, nearly burned a hole in her chest. Her biceps and thighs tensed, her body preparing for attack. The creatures wouldn't leave without a fight. They never did.

They came in all shapes and sizes, all colors, both sexes—and maybe something in-between—but they had one thing in common: they always came for her. Unlike that morning with her parents, the creatures never attacked anyone but her.

Every doctor who'd ever treated her had tried to convince her that the beings were merely figments of her imagination. Complex hallucinations, they said. Despite the wounds the creatures always left behind—wounds the doctors claimed she managed to inflict upon herself—she sometimes believed them. That didn't stop her from fighting, though. Nothing could.

Glowing red gazes panned the room before at last settling on her. Both males smiled, their sharp, dripping fangs revealed.

"Mine," Horsey said.

"No. Mine!" Horns snapped.

Always they wanted to claim her as property, and she had no idea why.

"Only one way to settle this." Horsey licked his lips in anticipation.

"Fight," Horns agreed.

He did not mean they should fight each other. They planned to fight her. In their minds, subduing her meant owning her. Owning her meant touching her, beating her, belittling her.

They never raped her, though. No matter how evil they were, and some were worse than others, none of them had ever crossed that line. Annabelle knew many of them had wanted to, because several had even spread her legs and tried. But just before penetration, a wave of terror would wash over their faces and they would stumble away from her.

Don't you see, Annabelle? one of the doctors had told her once. The fact that these creatures will not rape you proves they are hallucinations. Your mind stops them from doing something you can't handle.

As if she could handle any of the rest. How do you explain the injuries I receive while bound?

We found the tools you hid in your room, Annabelle. Shanks, a hammer we're still trying to figure out how you got, glass shards. Shall I go on?

"Who goes first?" Horsey asked, drawing her out of her mind.

"Me."

"No, me."

Adrenaline crashed through her, burning and chilling her at the same time. You can do this. It's just more of the same. Though no other patients were aware of what was going on, they were all sensitive to her shift in mood. Grunts and groans erupted around her. Both men and women, young and old, writhed in their seats, wanting to run away.

The guards posted at the only exit stiffened, going on alert but unsure who was to blame.

Fitzpervert knew, pegging Annabelle with his patented king-of-the-world frown. "You look worried, Annabelle. Why don't you tell us what's bothering you, hmm? Are you regretting your earlier outburst?"

"Screw you, Fitzpervert." Her gaze returned to her targets. They were the bigger threat. "Your turn will come."

He sucked in a breath. "You are not allowed to speak to me that way, Miss Miller."

"You're right. Sorry. I meant, screw you, Dr. Fitzpervert." Unarmed did not mean helpless, she told herself, and neither did bound; today, she would prove it to the creatures and Fitzpervert.

"Spirited," Horsey said with a gleeful nod.

"So fun to break," Horns cackled.

From the corner of her eye, she saw the good doctor motion one of the guards forward, and she knew the guy would take her jaw in a punishing grip and shove her cheek against his stomach to hold her in place. A degrading and suggestive position that humiliated even as it cowed, preventing her from biting so that Fitzherbert could inject her with a sedative.

Have to act now. Perfect timing, too. In one fluid move, she slid as far back in her chair as possible, straightening her legs and pressing her stomach against her thighs. When her butt cleared the space between top and bottom, she bent her legs so that they came out over the top, the folding metal now positioned in front of her like a shield.

The guard reached her.

She swung to the left, slamming her shield—and only weapon—into his stomach. Oxygen gushed from his mouth as he hunched over. Another swing and she nailed the side of his head, sending him to the floor in an unconscious heap.

A few patients shouted with agitation, and a few others cheered her on. The droolers continued leaking. Fitzpervert rushed to the door to force the remaining guard to act as his buffer, as well as summon more with the single press of a button. An alarm screeched to life, tossing the already disconcerted patients into more of a frenzy.

No longer content to bicker on the sidelines, the creatures stalked toward her, slow and steady, taunting her.

"Oh, the things we'll do to you, little girl."

"Oh, how you'll scream!"

Closer…closer…almost within reach…totally within reach…they laughed.

She kept the chair raised, but she couldn't track both her adversaries at the same time as one claimed the front and the other claimed the back. They swiped at her with their claws and tried to bite her with their poisoned fangs.

I can handle this. She rammed the top of the chair under Horsey's chin, knocking his teeth together and his brain, if he had one, into the back of his skull. At the same time, she kicked out a leg behind her, punting Horns in the stomach. Both creatures stumbled away from her, their grins vanishing.

"That all you got, girls?" she goaded. Two more minutes, that's all she had, and then the guards would rush inside and tackle her, pinning her down, Fitzpervert and his needle taking charge. She wanted these creatures finished.

"Let's find out," Horsey hissed, pushing the arsonist at Annabelle.

Wicked Nights was Wicked Amazing!!
By Carla Gallway
Carla's Review:

Gena Showalter is one of my favorite all time authors. I own every book she's ever written and pre-order her books as soon as they are available. I was super excited to get an ARC of Wicked Nights and could not wait to read it, although I hesitated reading it for a few days because I did not want it to end so quickly.Wicked Night's is the first book in Gena's new ANGELS OF THE DARK series, which is a spin-off of the LORDS OF THE UNDERWORLD series.

We've met Zacharel, the hero of this book, in previous LOTU books and we know him to be a cold-hearted and ruthless Angel. Zacharel is in danger of losing his wings and falling. As punishment, his Deity has tasked him with leading a group of misfit outcast angels who are also in danger of falling due their lack of sympathy and care towards humanity. They are now tasked with protecting humanity against demon attacks. If one of the Angels kills a human during the battle, Zacharel is severely punished for it. If Zacharel can't get his army to listen and follow his lead, they are all in danger of falling together. Only problem is, Zacharel thinks the same way as his Angels and cares not for humans. That is.....until he finds Annabelle Miller tied to a gurney in the mental asylum he and his Angels are tasked with protecting from the swarm of demons attacking it.

Annabelle, the heroine of the book has endured many horrors. She's spent the last four years of her life locked up in an asylum for the criminally insane because she was blamed for the heinous act of violence on her family. Only Annabelle knows that demons are the ones that attacked her family on her 18th birthday, and that's because she's the only one that can see demons. She has spent the last 4 years of her life abandoned by her remaining family and friends because they believe she committed the crime. She has endured horrible abuse at the hands of the doctors and staff at the hospital and from the constant attacks on her by the demons, but her spirit and will to live never die. She fights with all that she has left and that's what make Annabelle a kick-ass heroine. She does not wine or cry. She always fights and never gives up hope.

Zacharel and Annabelle together are the perfect combination for the two balance each other. Zacharel has never felt much emotion and has never felt desire. Annabelle has an amazing survival instinct and her will to never give up despite the odds, impresses Zacharel. Zacahrel makes Annabelle feel safe and protected which is what she needs most right now. Being that Annabelle faced some sexual abuse in the asylum, their getting together sexually was slow in process but, the chemistry between the two throughout the book was electrifying.

I am also intrigued by all of the other Angels in Zacharel's army. I am looking forward to Koldo's book which is scheduled to be released in February 2013. And I can't wait to learn more about these tortured Angles.

If you're a fan of the LORDS OF THE UNDERWORLD series you will be happy to know that Paris and a few of the other Lords make an appearance to help Zacharel, along with some of their mates.

Wicked Nights is a dark paranormal romance with all of the awesomeness that Gena puts into every book. It has strong alpha heroes, kick-ass heroines, smokin' hot romance, secondary characters that will leave you clamoring for the release of their books and a crazy twist of an ending that leaves you with your mouth hanging open.

Gena amazes me in how she has written so many books and they never get dull or boring. EVERY book is better than the last and she blows me away with every book she writes. She never disappoints me and I can't wait for the next installment of the ANGELS OF THE DARK.

I give WICKED NIGHTS 5 out of 5 stars!!

The worse book relating to LOTU
By Jenn L.
Um... did Gena Showalter forget how to write a good love scene? I don't need to read hot sex to enjoy a romance novel, but never before have I read a book from her (and I've read just about all of them) that was this blah. The whole "he kissed and touched her everywhere and she did the same to him" works if the sex scenes don't take up a huge portion of the book. She's usually a good go to person for good writing in that regard.
I LOVED Zacharel from previous books, I was hoping for so much more. There was no conflict with their relationship really. They fell in love within the first couple of chapters, he went from being a hard ass to being putty in no time. Really? He's thousands of years old and instantly changes and not because anything happens to them that puts his love to the test, but just because they met? They never explained about the snow, it stops cause he feels?
I've read all the other LOTU books multiple times (I read Olivia and Aeron's story every few months, cause it's amazing) I will never again read this one. BORING! I don't know if it will tie in with anymore LOTU books (is she ditching them for angels?), if it doesn't I would not recommend anyone read this.

Great start to new series.
By Ramblings From This Chick Blog
Don't hate me, but I didn't love this book. I really want to love it but for some reason I just couldn't really connect with it. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this story a lot and I liked the world and characters Gena introduced us to, I just felt like something was missing.

Zacharel is a cold, calculating warrior angel who has spent the last several hundred years emotionally dead inside. He has no feelings towards anyone else and does not care who he hurts in his attempt to banish the world of demons. Because of his ruthlessness and his disregard for human life he has been given one more chance to prove himself worthy of being an angel. He must take a army of misfit angels that are all on the cusp of being thrown out of the heavens for their rebellious and bad behavior and train them which isn't an easy job. Any mistakes and it's Zacharel's wings that are on the line.

Annabelle Miller has spent the last four years locked up for a crime she didn't commit. When she was eighteen she witnessed her parents murder at the hands of a demon and no one will believe her. She now resides in a facility for the criminally insane. She knows she isn't crazy and she had nothing to do with the death of her parents, but ever since that horrific day Annabelle has been able to see demons that no one else can and because of this she has spent the last four years defending herself against demon attacks. She has no idea why the demons attacked and killed her parents or even why they come for her now. When a chance meeting with Zacharel she finds she may finally get her answers.

Zacharel can't help but be intrigued by Annabelle. She has awakened something in him that he hasn't felt before. She is feisty and strong and will fight to the death if she must and he can't help the strong attraction he feels towards her. He quickly decides he wants to help keep her safe until they are able to figure out just what exactly is going on.

I really liked Annabelle and I thought that she is unbelievably strong. She has been through hell and back and she doesn't let it defeat her. She continues to fight tooth and nail and doesn't take no one's crap. I liked that she stands up to Zacharel and doesn't cower in the corner waiting for someone else to save the day.

As for Zacharel, it took me awhile to warm up to him. He was never my favorite and I always found him a bit cold and uncaring. But once I got a feel for him and started to understand the reason why he's the way he is he started to grow on me. He's got a lot of burdens to bear and the way he copes is by shutting himself off from everyone. I enjoyed watching him learn to care and to feel emotions.

I really enjoyed the relationship between Annabelle and Zacharel. Neither walks on eggshells around the other and they are both pretty blunt and to the point with everything. They didn't dance around one another or play any games. I actually really enjoy the beginning of their relationship because there was a bit of back and forth arguing going on that is very reminiscent of her LOTU books.

This was a good opening to what looks to be another great series for Gena. While I might not have liked this book as well as some of Gena's previous works, I did enjoy it and still found it hard to put down. Gena just has a way with creating a world full of interesting characters that you just want to know more about. She introduced a few characters that I can't wait to see more of. I am definitely looking forward to the next installment in the Angels of Dark series. I give this book a high 3.
