Dear Reader,

Welcome to a brand-new trilogy--and just in time for the holidays!

In the Crooked Valley Ranch series, you meet the Duggan siblings: Duke, Lacey and Rylan. None of them are ranchers, so it's a bit of a shock when they inherit the family spread from their grandfather. Each of them must take their place at the ranch or it goes up for sale.

Which doesn't really matter much to any of them...in the beginning. In The Cowboy's Christmas Gift, Duke Duggan returns to the ranch to figure out what to do next with his life. A career soldier, he's at loose ends now that he's lost his hearing in one ear. At first he just wants to get his bearings. Look at his options. It all sounds great until two things complicate his "no commitments" plans. First of all, he kind of likes the ranch and the open spaces and freedom. And then there's Carrie Coulter, the cattle foreman. Smart, feisty and loyal, she keeps Duke on his toes. Duke's torn between his freedom, wanting to reunite his family for Christmas, and knowing that selling the ranch might have devastating consequences for those who count on it for their livelihoods. That's a lot of responsibility for one guy to shoulder. Good thing Duke loves a challenge.

I hope you have a wonderful family holiday and enjoy the warmth of the season--as well as a good book or two!
Best wishes,
 Donna

A story that I really enjoyed!
By paula legate
I really enjoyed this story. Duke came back to his family's ranch to figure out what to do with the rest of his life. He was a soldier in the military. He lost half of his hearing, and took a medical discharge. It was really hard for him to tell anyone that it was hard for him to hear.

Carrie was the foreman on the ranch. Duke and Carrie had a instant attraction to one another. Carrie tried to stay away. She didn't want anyone to think she was having a relationship, or sleeping with the boss. She didn't want to loose anyone's respect.

Carrie helped Duke realize that his hearing loss was just one part of him. That he can't let the injury define who he is. I love the two together. The romance was slow and sweet. The book also had a family aspect to it. Duke's family gathered together for Christmas. I've always loved story's where a family comes together when a soldier comes home.

Below is one sample of the book -

Sample from chapter 8 - "I'm not going back to the Army, and I need to sort out where I go from here. Turns out this isn't such a bad place to be." "As a consolation prize? Why on earth would you leave something you love? You're only thirty. You still have lots of healthy years!"
This was it, then - Telling his family, who'd only known so far that he'd been wounded and not seriously. He had no big scars, no limps to emphasize the point. And perhaps that was what made it most difficult. It seemed terribly unfair that everything changed over an injury that was so completely invisible. It made him feel like a fraud. "But I don't," he explained quietly. "I lost hearing in one of my ears, Lacey. And it won't ever come back. I'm half-deaf." There was silence for a moment and then she shut the dishwasher door. "What does that mean?" "It means my combat days are done. And that's what I loved. I don't want to be sitting behind a desk somewhere. I'd rather take a medical discharge and start over."

Very good book
By S. Frank
Very good book. Duke has come back to the ranch to decide what to do with the rest of his life. After losing his hearing in one ear because of a battlefield injury, the army is in his past. His grandfather left him one-third of the ranch, just as he did with Duke's brother and sister. They have to decide if they are going to keep or sell the ranch. Duke isn't sure if ranching is the life he wants, but he's willing to give it a chance. He doesn't expect to see Carrie, a friend from his childhood, nor does he expect the heat between them.

Carrie is surprised to see Duke back on the ranch. He had made no secret of his desire for a career in the army instead of working on his grandfather's ranch. She's had a good job as the ranch foreman, and had looked on Duke's grandfather as family. She's worried when she discovers that the terms of the will mean that the ranch could be sold and she would be out of work. She's also worried about the attraction between her and Duke, especially since he doesn't know if he's staying around.

I loved the two of them together. They have time together on the ranch, as Carrie shows him what it means to be a rancher. There's also their personal time together. Their attraction had hit them hard, and both decided to see where it would take them. Carrie isn't sure if she should pursue it, as she fears falling for him and then losing him if he decides to leave. But she also hates the idea of not having him at all. She is a very independent woman, used to taking care of herself. She isn't quite sure how to handle her changing feelings, as Duke shows her a level of caring she's never had before. Duke enjoys the closeness with Carrie, and she is constantly on his mind. He's doing his best to keep their relationship light, as a way of keeping control of his life, but he finds himself feeling more than he expected. Duke also has to come to terms with his hearing loss, another thing that he's had no control over. Carrie shows him that it's not something that has to define him or stop him from having the life he wants.

When both their lives take an unexpected turn they have to find a way to deal with it. Carrie fears that it will cause Duke to stay on the ranch out of a sense of duty, and that he will resent having the choice taken from him. She has fallen in love with him, but thinks that he doesn't feel the same about her. Duke has to find a way to show her that while duty is a part of who he is, his reasons for staying are much more personal. It takes a snowstorm and a coyote to bring them together.

I also enjoyed the family theme. Duke's grandfather's will is the catalyst to bring Duke, Lacey and Rylan back together. I loved seeing Duke begin to get a better sense of who his grandfather had been and what his dreams had been. I especially loved seeing his desire to get his whole family together for the holiday, and the effect it also had on Carrie. There seemed to be a hint also of who will be paired up with Lacey, and I have a suspicion of who will end up with Rylan. I'm looking forward to seeing if I'm right.

Beautiful start to Donna Alward’s Crooked Valley Ranch series
By Lucy Waterhouse
The Cowboy’s Christmas Gift is a beautiful start to Donna Alward’s Crooked Valley Ranch series. I have never read any of Donna’s books before and this is a great first read.

Duke Duggan reluctantly comes back to his deceased Grandfather’s ranch after a medical discharge from the army. His Grandfather has left a third each of it to him and his brother and sister with stipulations and conditions.

Carrie Coulter remembers Duke from when she was a child and she is surprised to see Duke return to Crooked Valley Ranch as he had always been so determined never to live there. She is now the foreman of the cattle side of the ranch business and really loves and needs her job.

There is a wonderful chemistry between Carrie and Duke and their growing relationship throughout the story is so enthralling, I couldn’t put the book down. There are some misunderstandings and a special surprise that has the relationship teetering.
I love that Carrie is such a strong heroine. She has the ability to stand firm in her ability to do her job and keep Duke in line, but she also has a vulnerability to let Duke finally into her life fully and let him love her the way she deserves to be loved.
Duke is finding his way back into a non-military world and adjusting to his disability whilst taking on responsibility for such a huge ranch. He too has vulnerability and Carrie is his anchor and soul mate.

Donna has a wonderful gift to immerse her readers into the lives of these two people and the interactions with the other characters in the Crooked Valley Ranch series. I can’t wait to read Lacey and Quinn’s story!

The Cowboy’s Christmas Gift is a wonderful Christmas story and a definite must read for these holidays.
