Not what I expected...

I have been a huge fan of Bertrice Small ever since I started reading romance novels at the age of 15. While most of her work has a bit of predictability after reading several novels, it has never been a problem because the stories were so good. Such was the case with the first 5 novels in the World of Hetar Series. The story was good enough to overcome the predictability. Unfortunately that wasn't the case for Crown of Destiny, and it saddens me to admit it.
The long-awaited culmination of the series was sadly flat. Sure it had all the raw, erotic sex scenes that are expected from this author, but they actually made it worse. The book seemed rushed to me. Almost as if the author was just trying to finish it already and so it seemed to lack conviction. The descriptions of food and clothing, which are also expected from Ms. Small, dominated the book. I found myself skipping whole pages to get around the food, clothes and sex in order to see some plot progression.
Overall, the book was OK. It tied up the loose ends of the series, but didn't really leave me with the sense of fulfillment that I would have expected from a 6 part series. I recommend this book to those who have read the previous books in the series, but only to finish the story, even though it's not that great.

Overall the book was a decent end to a series because it wrapped up quite a few loose ends. I had a few issues though.
1) Lara didn't feel like the Lara of other books. You got glimpses when she went all stubborn and tried to do things her way, but overall she seemed way too detached for a woman who we have heard a great destiny awaited.
Not to get into spoilers but I finished the book with a "That's it?" kind of feeling. There was at times TOO much magic going on and other times, not enough. You cannot tell me that Kaliq and his brothers couldn't have found some way to whisk Marzina back to safety without freaking Lara out. If they were willing and able to save the Fairie races by transporting them to an entirely new planet, they couldn't have just zapped Lara's daughter out of the abyss? After all, she is Magic, not mortal.
2) *Spoiler* If Marzina's destiny is to bring that world back from darkness, I wish we had a better character development for her.
3) Kolgrim was an awesome evil bad guy despite having a "Mommy didn't love me complex". (Okay so was Kaliq, who is ALWAYS awesome)
4) I want to know what happens to Lothair and Lara's faerie maid.
5) I'm guessing since Lara's storyline is done, there will be a new series for Marzina.

The only thing I got from the way it ended was, magic would one day poof. Yay great! We watched Lara go around saving the entire universe, only to find out "sorry folks all magic will one day poof, those super-hot Shadow Princes will die off, Terah is covered in darkness for untold eons and there's nothing anyone can do about it. But hey look! A new planet for mortals to discover and corrupt."

Very good ending

I have been waiting for this book. I'm glad to finally read it but also sad because it is the end of the series. The story was very good & full of sex scenes which are in most of Bertrice Small's books. The only disappointment for me was the lack of love scene for Marzina. She became my favorite character in the series & I was left wanting more. All in all it is a good book & any Small fan will enjoy. I finished the book in about 2 1/2 hours that is how good a read it is. If you are a fan of Lara & Kaliq then i would highly recommend.
