We begin with Justice Garret, a former soldier and private bodyguard who once lived in the town while in witness protection as a teenager. During the brief year he spent posing as a 16 year-old high school student instead of the 18 year old graduate he was, Justice befriended 14 year-old Patience McGraw.
Before their relationship could move beyond friendship, Justice’s father was spotted in town and he was forced to flee, leaving without explanation. The town searched for the missing boy but never found answers.
Fourteen years later, Patience is a single mother with a 10 year old daughter, working at the town salon and dreaming of opening her own coffee shop. Abandoned by her husband only weeks after her daughter Lillie was born, Patience is used to fending for herself. She’s never forgotten the boy her 14 year-old self was so desperately in love with but never heard from again. Susan Mallery first captured my attention with her contemporary series, Blackberry Island. I was so entranced with her writing style I followed it up with her most well-known series, Fool's Gold. So as you can see I love this authors writing, and I recommend her to anyone who loves a good contemporary romance. Now I want to discuss her newest release, Just One Kiss.
I absolutely adored this book. I loved how strong of a character Patience was considering everything she has overcome in her life. I couldn't put this one down; read it in a single day - it was a remarkably late night. This author really knows how to pull strong emotions out of her characters. I loved that she wrote Justice as a hero with real emotion. The authors writing style is both captivating and engaging. This is a delightfully well-written romance with characters that are charismatic and alluring. Another great visit to Fool's Gold - thanks Susan.

Superbly written!

I have tremendous love for the Fool's Gold series. Susan Mallery brings a fresh outlook to each book that keeps the series from getting stale as some long running series often do. I'm just saying that I've enjoyed each new book but JUST ONE KISS is one of the best of the bunch. It had the perfect element of suspense without overwhelming the romance and I really enjoyed that. `Cause you know it's all about the love for this gal.
This wasn't Justice Garrett's first time around the block in the town of Fool's Gold. He'd lived in town for a while. I got that impression when he first showed up as bodyguard to the stars in All Summer Long. Turned out that I was right, as usual, and he had a past in the quaint little town. Now, he's back to open a defense academy along with one of the town's prodigal sons.
Well informed readers know that the town has a shortage on hot guys so they pretty much get snatched up as soon as they hit town. So it came as no surprise when Justice hooked up with his old school friend, Patience McGraw. They'd been close and she'd had a crush on him before he disappeared so suddenly all those years ago. The two are still drawn to each other and inevitably begin a romantic relationship. But they've both got some issues with commitment that stand in the way. She is afraid to fall in love only to be abandoned again. He is afraid that the sins of the father will revisit him and in a way he was right. The truth is that they were both scared to be hurt anymore, I'm thinking.
JUST ONE KISS is as good as it gets in the contemporary romance genre. Charming characters, engaging plot and the wonderful hometown setting that I've come to love with regards to this series. A superbly written story that hooked my interest and kept it right up until the ending. Even better is that it kicks off the newest trilogy and gives me something to look forward to reading this summer. I love how Ms Mallery releases this amazing series in trilogies and doesn't make me wait a year in between them. Cuts down on the withdrawals.
I'm giving JUST ONE KISS four flying stars. I loved it and happily recommend it to all.

Not as delightful as her other books

I really love the Fool's Gold series. I have recommended it to several friends. And I was looking forward to this next book in the series.
I typically read at least one book a day... with these stories, I have read two in a day. This one, however, took me several days. I just couldn't get into it.
I tried to figure out why... why not this one when all the others were so good. The only thing I can figure out is that there are too many subplots, and the so called main plot wasn't featured significantly more than the others. That, and much of the story was in the heads of the characters as most of their conflict was also in their heads.
Or maybe the suspense factor was minimal.
That being said, I still cried at the end, although I think I did so more because I can identify with the situation than for any other reason.
I will still buy all of Susan Mallery's books because the vast majority of them are brilliant (I have read at least 35 of them). I just hope subsequent ones are back up to par.
