In a world in which psychic powers are mainstream and used for evil as well as good, there exists an agency, After Moonrise, to handle psychic crimes. Two tales by prime paranormal romance writers tell the story of a two agency cases. In Cast’s “Possessed,” psychic detective Kent Raef loses his ability to read negative emotions just as Lauren Wilcox needs his help finding the murderer of her twin sister, Aubrey. In Showalter’s “Haunted,” Lana, one of the company’s head mediums, insists that her best friend, Harper, enlist the help of detective Levi Reid to investigate why Harper is having extended blackouts and painting images of what seems to be a memory of gruesome death. Cast makes her more controversial case compelling, though the relationships in it aren’t equally balanced, which may leave some readers unsettled by how the love story unfolds. There are few surprises in Showalter’s entry, but its macabre twist is nonetheless chilling. Levi and Harper are two unconventional peas in a pod, and their lighter moments are needed to balance the darker ones. --Nina C. Davis

Cast and Showalter
By Jessie Potts
Possessed was 3 stars Haunted was 4 stars
What it's about: After Moonrise is about a paranormal agency called After Moonrise or A.M. P.C. Cast and Gena Showalter each write a story involving the agency in some way. Cast's novella, Possessed, is about twins (one is dead and one is seeking help) and a psychic who can "sense" and track negative emotions. Haunted, by Showalter, is about an artist and a detective who both experience "blackouts" related to a serial killer.
Why you should read it: Gena Showalter is one of the authors on my must-read list, so of course I jumped at the chance to read Haunted. It's very mysterious and exciting. She doesn't skimp on the blood, gore or action. Her heroes are always hot, and her heroines are either butt-kickers or have a core of strength beneath the surface. I really enjoyed reading Haunted! Possessed was a bit harder for me. I love Cast's writing style; I've enjoyed her Goddess by Mistake series as well as most of the House of Night series. What was hard for me in this one was the twin concept. One twin is dead and haunts the other twin. The living twin "takes one for the team" and allows her dead sister to "drive" her to have relations with the hero. I won't spoil the ending but ... it was uncomfortable for me. Having said that, I still liked the writing, and the plot was appealing.

Unexpected Paranormal Thriller- No Spoilers
By Lola Jane
I'm usually not a huge fan of novellas and short stories- I just need more there in words and plot and characters. Novellas are almost always too short for me. Here, these didn't hook me and hold my interest. I'm not sure that it wasn't me- which is why it gets three stars. I found the novellas to be grimmer than I was expecting and that kind of impacted my attitudes toward the romance and the chemistry between the couples.
The novellas are connected by a paranormal detective agency called After Moonrise- characters in each novella has connections to the agency. I thought it was an interesting idea but each novella went off into an unexpected direction. Anyway, the novellas are primarily mysteries and each has twists and turns (which is why I'm on a no spoilers bent). PC Cast's "Possessed" is the shorter novella and I thought it too brief. The ending came off as too neatly resolved. The twist wasn't much addressed in the ending. And, I couldn't help but wondering about one of the twin sister's well-being in the ending. I thought the romance was tepid- I never got much chemistry between the characters. Gena Showalter's "Haunted" was a longer, more complicated story. Here, both the mysterious lady and the detective have their own personal mysteries to solve. It was pretty well plotted and had a decently complex mystery. I liked the characters a lot more- they were pretty well-drawn. And then... big, old twist! And, for some reason, I was surprised at how grim it was. I shouldn't be- the book gave plenty of foreshadowing but I was still a little taken aback. Again, I just wasn't that into the characters' chemistry. And, post-twist, I had some real problems seeing the chemistry.
I didn't hate the book- it was okay. If you pick it up, I'd warn you to dial down your expectations for unicorns and puppies and sparkly, happy things. Because neither novella was a sparkly, happy sort of love story.

Take two of the biggest names in the paranormal genre and you get an anthology to haunt your dreams.

Take two of the biggest names in the paranormal genre and you get an anthology to haunt your dreams. Gena Showalter and P.C. Cast have teamed up to give two short stories about what goes bump in the night through an agency in After Moonrise. After Moonrise is no ordinary agency and they only handle cases of a paranormal nature and they now have two juicy murders to solve.
In Possessed, Kent Raef is a detective but not the usual kind; he a psychic detective and he tracks down people via emotions, violent ones, to be precise. The story follows him in his latest case which may lead to something more. Laura Wilcox comes to him with his mother to solve the murder of her twin sister who died recently and is communicating through possessing Lauren`s body. Raef is the only who can help her, but he's not easy to convince to take on the job. Lenora, his boss, tells him to take it as she has an inkling that he is having problems with his gift but it's not an easy case. In addition, he is falling in love with one of the twins--but which one is the question.
I love this story; the characters I can understand and relate to, unlike the next story. There is a little bit of world building in this one to set up the agency but it takes a backseat to the main story. Kent Raef needs loving and Lauren needs answers about her sister's murder so she can get peace from her sister. It makes for a hilarious story, which has it moments because of the turmoil going on. I won't give details away concerning Kent and the past events and his current state of powers. To help this couple they may need Aubrey`s help, Lauren's twin, who has a naughty imagination.
The second story, Haunted, l took awhile to get into, it took a couple of sittings to read the first two chapters as it was completely different from the last story in writing style. There is a nice overlap with Lenora who happens to be Aurora's friend and I found Lenora's role in this story confusing. Like Kent, she works for the same agency and is the one with supernatural gifts but she is not the one who helps solve the murder in this case.
I found it weird at first that Lenora is in the story because I thought she would be the supernatural help for the case and it really stumped me at first reading as she is introduced in the first couple of chapters along with elements of the murder. Enter Levi Reed who has recently moved into the apartments and is on leave from the police force. Aurora is his neighbour and convinces him to help her when she shows him the painting and describes her scenes of the murder.
With only her mind and the painting as their own clues, they're going to need all the breaks they can get to solve the mystery and the murder, if there is one.
I was expecting a lot of gore in this book since it has two murders involving violence but wasn't really, the most is in the Haunted when Aurora goes over what she think is the murder and is replaying it in her head as the pieces start to emerge from her memories.
4 couples, but it's more like 3.5 couples; I loved the first story, as I said before, but I'm so-so about the second story. It may be different for others but I related more to the story written by Cast than the one by Showalter.
