Storyline is weak, the heroine immature, and the romance non-existent

Note: Stands alone read. 1st book in Children of Texas series
SLOW READ. Strong family theme, likable characters, and a great secondary cast. HOWEVER, the writing is wordy, the dialogue stilted, the plot overly contrived, and the characters, while likable, are neither admirable nor realistic. For example, when the engaged hero finds out he has a son, he becomes an obsessed father who ignores his fiancée. At the same time, the heroine seem to feel running away is the way to solve problems. These issues detract badly from the story and make the book painful to read.
THE STORY follows single mother and college student, Rebecca Barlow, and her almost five-year-old son, Joey. Only three semesters away from her degree, she finds a new part-time job and comes face-to-face with the boy's father, wealthy lawyer, Jeff Jacobs. Seeing him, she feels compelled to tell him about the existence of his unknown son. He becomes a focused, over indulgent father, while she obsesses about what this is doing to his relationship with his fiancée, who is now conveniently interested in Jeff's new law partner. To solve these difficulties, Becca's plan is to abandon her college degree, her family, and her established life with a good paying job, to run away like a flighty 15-year-old. This isn't noble, this is stupidity.
OVERALL, a shallow romance with an immature heroine. The events are too contrived and the stilted writing make the book painful to get through. Skip it. There are better books out there.

Judy Christenberry is a wonderful writer. I bought this book a long time ago and although I don't remember the specifics, I see it was part of a series. Her books always good reads.
